Kong Zi,also called Confucius(551—479 B. C. ),and Socrates (469—399 B. C. )lived only a hundred years apart, and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.
Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical(激进的)than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rulers how to govern effectively. Thus,Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius,on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went on to government service.
Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life. “Do not do to others w hat you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek
wisdom. He believed that some had more potential to develop their reason than others did. Like Confucius, he believed that the superior class should rule the inferior(下层的) classes.
For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.
Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?

C.The societies were influenced by the philosophers' ideas.
D.There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.

2.Socrates shared with Confucius the idea that ________.
A.all men were equal when they were born
B.the lower classes should be ruled by the upper class
C.the purpose of man was to seek freedom and wisdom
D.people should not ask others to do what they did not want to

由第三段最后一句话“Like Confucius, he believed that the superior class should rule the in ferior classes.”

3.What made some people different from others according to Confucius?
A.Family. B.Potential.
C.Knowledge. D.Community.

A.time and events

Art museums are places where people can learn about various cultures(文化). The
increasingly popular“design museums”that are opening today, however, perform quite a different role. Unlike most art museums, the design museum shows objects that are easily found by the general public. These museums sometimes even place things like fridges and washing machines in the center of the hall.
People have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales—It is the honoring of excellently invented products. The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something, while the second tells you the success of a sale.
One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhibits. Unlike the average art museum visitors, design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or puzzled(困惑). This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look as they do, and how design has improved the quality of our lives. Art museum exhibits, on the other hand, would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something beyond their understanding.
In recent years, several new design museums have opened their doors. Each of these museums has tried to satisfy the public's growing interest in the field with new ideas. London's Design Museum, for example, shows a collection of mass-produced object from Zippo lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian fishing. The choices open to design museum seem far less strict than those to art museums, and visitors may also sense the humorous(幽默的)part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life.
5.Showcases in design museums are different from store windows because they________.
A.show more technologically advanced products
B.help increase the sales of products
C.show why the products have sold well
D.attract more people than store windows do

6.The author believes that most design museum visitors________.
A.do not admire mass-produced products
B.are puzzled with technological exhibits
C.dislike exhibits in art museums
D.know the exhibits very well

7.The choices open to design museums________.
A.are not as strict as those to art museums
B.are not aimed to interest the public
C.may fail to bring some pleasure to visitors
D.often contain precious exhibits

8.The best title for this passage is________.
A.The forms of design museums
B.The exhibits of design museums
C.The nature of design museums
D.The choices open to design museums

Dear_Mike,
Nice_to_hear_that_you_will_come_to_Xicheng_city_this_June. To help you get an idea about Xicheng, here I suggest a one-day tour plan around the lake.
You can start the tour with Hupan Hill, which is quite near Wanghu Hotel. From the top of the hill, you can enjoy a bird-view of the lake. After that, it's time for you to take a boat trip on the lake. There is a quay on Liu Crossway just below the hill, from where you can take a boat to Huxin Island, which is sure to impress you. After you land on Hubin Quay, you can do some shopping on Fengtan Road, a popular shopping mall not far from your hotel!
If I am of any other help, don't hesitate to write to me.
Yours,
