Noble Image Patching Tools

This tutorial will cover some techniques for repairing or modifying images with the Patch Tool,

the Clone Stamp Tool, and the Healing Brush.

I placed some oak leaves in a scanner and this is the result. The values are a little dull. (Figure 1)To work along with me, download the file.OakBunch50.psd.hqx

I have reduced the size 50% so it will download faster. The file is 1.07 MB. After downloading you will need to unstuffit with the free Stuffit Expander software.

Open the file in Photoshop. Increase the image by 200% to change it back to the correct size. In the menu, go to "Image -> Image Size..." In the Image Size dialog box, change Width: pixels to Width: percent. Type 200 in the width box. The image will now be the correct size.

The file is 300 ppi. It should be 3.75 inches wide and 2.25 inches high.

This is the final repaired image to be used as the background for a business card. The changes were made so the leaves would not interfere with text or images. (Figure 2)

Download the finished file. I have left all layers and channels. The file is 1.33 MB. Increase the image by 200% as above.OakBunchDone50.psd.hqx

Start by brightening the image.

Type Command + L to open the Levels dialog box. You may also choose "Image ->

Adjustments -> Levels..." As you can see, there is a large gap on the right, meaning the image has no highlights. Click and hold the mouse on the right "highlights" triangle and slide it over to the left. The gray "mid-tones" triangle in the center will slide over at the same. (Figure 3)

Step back if necessary

with the Patch Tool

There is a large hole in the lower left where a bug chewed on the leaf. Large repairs are the perfect place to use the Patch Tool. Zoom in on the hole. (Figure 4)

Click and hold down the mouse button as you draw around the hole. If you make a mistake, press Command + D to deselect and start over. As with the Marquee Tool, you may add to the patch selection by pressing the shift key and drawing, or subtract from the selection by

pressing the option key and drawing. (Figure 5)

Click and drag the selection to another part of the image. Wherever you drag the selection, the Patch Tool will copy what is under the selection and snap a copy back into the hole. If you do not like how it looks, type Command + D to deselect and step back in the History panel. When you are happy, choose Command + D to deselect.(Figure 6)
