《汽车维修英语》讲义(2)Unit Two :Engine and Transmission 1.TextAs the power assembly of an automobile, theengine is an internal- combustion engine(ICE) because the fuelis burned inside its cylinders. Gasoline engines and diesel engines are in use at present. They use gasoline and diesel oil as fuel respectively.How does an engine work? The burning of thefuel inside an engine produces high pressure inthe engine's combustion chamber. This highpressure forces pistons to move, which iscarried by connecting rods to crankshaft. Thecrankshaft is thus made to rotate; the rotarymotion is delivered through the power train tothe driving wheels and then the car moves.The components of an engine are easy to gowrong, because they are in a poor workingcondition of high pressure, high temperature and changing loads. Therefore, an engine should be maintained with care and checked regularly by technicians.A gearbox has many shafts and gears, which make it possible to select the meshing gearcouples and change the rolling speed of the transmission system. Following is a layshaft used in a truck.The common problems with gearbox include the difficulty in engaging gears, jumping out of gear, noisy gear mesh and oil leaks. You should look for the reasons and eliminate the problems. The automatic transmission (AT) is also used on an auto today. It's easier to control than a mechanical gearbox, but more complicated and more expensive. Remember to ask a skilled technician for help if there is some trouble with your AT.2.Automaker and Logo(2)Logos of Automakers (2)Do you know these trademarks? 3.5 Automtomatic transmission with hydrodynamic converter (AT)-Conventional automatic transmission Torque converter ( Fig.3-10 ) serves as a starting clutch to facilitates smooth and comfortable drawing away, transmits and multiplies the engine torque, and damps engine torsional vibrations. gear systems are used to multiply torques, reduce speeds and reverses the direction of rotation for the reverse gear. Most automatics use the planetary gear sets (Fig.3-11). The commonly used planetary gears are Ravigneaux set and Simpson set. A simple planetary-gear set can also be connected to the upstream or downstream of a Ravigneaux set or Simpson set. Either the outer gear or the sun gear may be held stationary, providing more than one possible torque multiplication factor for each set of gears. Also, if all three gears are forced to rotate at the same speed, the gear set forms, in effect, a solid shaft.

1.Transmission Gear Ratios
The modern manual transmission can provide the driver with up to six forward gear ratios. The reduction gears provide gear ratios of approximately 3.5:1 (stated as 3.5 to 1) for the lowest gear, to about 1.5:1 for the highest. The direct drive gear has a 1:1 gear ratio. The overdrive gears have a gear ratio of about 0.7:1.
