• The Ant and the Dove An ant is walking by the river. He looks at the river and says to himself, “How nice and cool this water looks! I must drink some of it.” But when he is drinking, he slips into the river. “Oh.Help!Help!” The ant cries, A dove is sitting in the tree. She hears him and throws him a leaf, “Climb up that leaf,” she says “and you will float bank.” The ant climbs onto the leaf, and the wind blows the leaf to the bank. And the ant is saved. “Thank you, Dove. You’re so kind,” The ant says and runs home, “You have saved my life, and I wish I could do something for you, Goodbye!” “Goodbye!” says the dove, “Be careful. Not to fall into the river again.” After a few days, the dove is building her nest. And a man is raising his gun to shoot her. The ant sees this, and runs quickly to bite the man’s leg. “Ouch! Ouch!” The man feels pained and drops his gun. The dove hears and flies away. So the man picks up his gun and leave. The dove comes to her nest. “Thank you, my little friend,” she says, “You have saved my life.” The little ant is so glad, because he can help the dove.

It was the last day o f the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Ha ll clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big m inute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock ha s stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.Lesson 10 Not for jazz不适于演奏爵士乐We have an old musical instrument. It is called a clavichord(翼琴). I t was made in Germany in 1681. They will be arriving here tomo rrow. They will be coming by train and most of the youngpeople in the town will be meeting them at the station. Tomorrow even ing they will be singing at the Workers' Club. The Greenwood Boys wil l be staying for five days. During this time, they will give five performances. As usual, the police will have a difficult time. They will be trying to keep order. It is always the same on these occasions. Lesson 14 Do you speak English?你会讲英语吗?I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small vil lage in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As so on as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French a nd he replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slow ly, 'Do you speak English?' As I soon learnt, he was English himself! Lesson 15 Good news佳音The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very n ervous when. I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large sal aries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come. 'Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice. 'Don't interrupt,' he said. Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!Lesson 16 A polite request彬彬有礼的要求If you park your car in the wrong place, a traffic policeman will soo n find it. You will be very lucky if he lets you go without a ticket. However, this does not always happen. Traffic police are sometimes v ery polite. In the play, she must appear in a brig ht red dress and long black stockings. Last year in another play, she had to wear short socks and a bright, orange-coloured dress. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. In stead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am even l ess lucky. I never catch anything-not even old boots. After having sp ent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. 'You must give up fishing!' my friends say.' It's a waste of time.' B ut they don't realize one important thing. I'm not really interested in fishing. I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothi ng at all!Lesson21 Mad or not?是不是疯了?Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad. I live near an airport and pass ing planes can be heard night and day. The airport was built during t he war, but for some reason it could not be used then. Last year, how ever, it came into use. Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise. I am one of the few people left. S ometimes I think this house will be knocked down by a passing plane.I have been offered a large sum of money to go away, but I am determi ned to stay here. Everybody says I must be mad and they are probably right.Lesson22 A glass envelope玻璃信封My daughter, Jane, never dreamed of receiving a letter from a girl of her own age in Holland. Last year, we were travelling across the Cha nnel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it in to a bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She never thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. However, they have decided to use the post-office. Letters will cost a litt1e more, but they will certainly travel faster.Lesson23 A new house新居I had a letter from my sister yesterday. She lives in Nigeria. In her letter, she said that she would come to England next year. If she co mes, she will get a surprise. We are now living in a beautiful new h ouse in the country. Work on it had begun before my sister left. The house was completed five months ago. In my letter, I told her that she could stay with us. The house has many large rooms and there is a l ovely garden. It is a very modern house, so it looks strange to some people. It must be the only modern house in the district.Lesson24 It could be worse不幸中之万幸I entered the hotel manager's office and sat down. I had just lost $50 and I felt very upset.' I left the money in my room,' I said, 'and it's not there now.' The manager was sympathetic, but he could do not hing. 'Everyone's losing money these days,' he said. He started to co mplain about this wicked world but was interrupted by a knock at the door. A girl came in and put an envelope on his desk. It contained $5 o. 'I found this outside this gentleman's room' she said. 'Well,' I s aid to the manager, 'there is still some honesty in this world!’。

其形式为:was /were + V-ing。
常与表示过去的时间状语连用,如:last night, last Saturday等;或者与when, while, as引导的过去时间状语连用。
2>基本用法<1>. 过去进行时的基本用法主要表示过去某一时间正在进行的动作。
如:He fell asleep when he was reading. 他看书时睡着了。
<2>. 用过去进行时表示现在主要是为了使语气委婉、客气。
如:I was wondering if you could give me a lift. 我不知你能否让我搭一下车。
【注】一般过去时也有类似用法,但比较而言,用过去进行时显得更客气,更不肯定。
<3>. 过去进行时表示感情色彩与现在进行时相似,过去进行时也可表示满意、称赞、惊讶、厌恶等感情色彩,也通常与always, forever, continually等副词连用。
如:They were always quarrelling. 他们老是吵架。
<4>. 动词be的过去进行时动词be的进行时也可表示过去一时的表现或暂时的状态。
比较:He was friendly. 他很友好。
(指过去长期如此)He was being friendly. 他当时显得很友好。
(指当时一时的表现)补充:when 的后面加一般过去时,而且动词是非延续性动词。
