The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular. Thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fireworks displays.
For people who stay at home, most are attracted by the special, live New Year shows on TV. They are waiting for the countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland people visit their neighbors and drink, dance on New Year's Eve. If you're invited to a Scottish home that night, it's important to know what to bring with you: a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.
The coal shows warmth, so you're wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food, so you're hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky "the water of life", so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts, it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
And there's one more key task you still have to perform if you can. The first person to knock on a neighbor's door is supposed to be a tall, dark and handsome man who will bring good luck to the household. But what if that's not you? Well, don't ring the bell just yet. Wait a while and the right person is sure to turn up soon!

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named "Drive LAB" in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝)and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom-made navigation(导航)tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains:"For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others. "
"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to. "
Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains, "The Drive LAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.
"For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at the benefits of systems which
control their speed as a way of preventing that.
"We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel. "
28. What is the purpose of the Drive LAB?
A. To explore new means of transport.
B. To design new types of cars.
C. To find out older driver’s problems.
D. To teach people traffic rules.
29. Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe?
A. It keeps them independent.
B. It helps them save time.
C. It builds up their strength.
D. It cures their mental illnesses.
30. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Model Electric Car
B. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road
C. Driving Services for Elders
D. A Solution to Traffic Problems

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

George’s mother was very poor and sick. Instead of having bright fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks which George picked up from under trees.
One fine day in July, his sick mother sent him to the woods. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could collect.
It was a bright and sunny day, and George worked very hard, so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot along the bank he saw among the grass some fine, wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter!” George thought. Lining his cap with leaves, he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the river.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark room in the village.
George thought of all this, and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, “How much Mom would like these!” So he stopped, and put the strawberry back. “Shall I save them for her?” he said, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with longing eyes.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said at last, and he divided them into two heaps(堆). But each heap looked so small that he put them together again.
“I will only taste one,” he thought. As he lifted it to his mouth again, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. “I will keep them all for her,” he said with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely, ready to take home.

Paragraph 1:
He stood up and started to get more and more wood until the sun began to sink. George set out for home. Very carefully, he carried his cap filled with the strawberries. He felt delighted as he could have all of his strawberries for his sick mother. The nearer he came to his home, the less he wished to taste them. Then, he arrived home before he knew it.
Paragraph 2:
Just after he had thrown down his wood, he heard his mothers weak voice calling him from the next room."Is that you, George? I am glad you have come, for I am thirsty and I’m longing for some tea. Could you get some for me?" George ran to her and joyfully offered her all the wild strawberries. Seeing the wild strawberries, George's mother couldn’t contain her joy, tears running down her face. She said, "My boy, I know that you didn't taste any of the strawberries and saved all for me. God will bless you for all of this, my son." At that moment, George and his mother were both filled with great happiness.。
