His secretary requested a 10% salary raise. The problem was that 10% was a large raise compared to the 5% other employees had received. Was there a win-win(双赢)way out of this problem? As they looked at the possibilities, several ideas appeared. The company starts work at 8 am and closes at 5 pm. The manager learned that his secretary got caught in heavy traffic every evening on the way home. They agreed to have her work from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This saved her at least 20-25 minutes driving time, a benefit to her at little or no loss to the company. They then studied her job in detail. Before long they jointly developed a new idea which gave her more responsibilities, and, at the same time, more interesting work. Both parties benefitted from the changed arrangement of work. The raise itself was then discussed. A decision was made by agreeing on a 6% raise for three months and then an additional 12% later if the new responsibilities were properly performed.1. The shopkeeper wrapped the meat in a piece of paper and the man took it home. When he unwrapped the meat, he was surprised to see some old writing on the paper. This man was in charge of the public library, so he knew a lot about old books and old writing. He realized that the paper was a page of scientific notes."Only one man wrote like that," the librarian said to himself. "It was Galileo who wrote these notes!"Who was Galileo? Galileo was a famous Italian scientist. He was a man of ideas, but he was also a man of action. He made many experiments in order to find out more about the earth and the universe. Galileo believed that scientists should not only sit in universities and talk about theory; they should also make practical experiments and learn from the results.Galileo wrote down notes of all the experiments he made. After Galileo's death in 1642, Viviani, one of his students, collected the notes together and put them into his own library. However, when Viviani died, nobody looked at Galileo's notes any longer. For many years, people forgot about them. The librarian hurried back to the market and asked the shopkeeper where he had got the paper from. The shopkeeper led him to the house where he bought the paperfrom. In the house, the librarian found many more of Galileo's notes. The family gave them to him.In this way, a large number of important notes about Galileo's experiments were saved.31.The librarian got Galileo's notes from ____.A the butcherB VivianiC a family living in Viviani's houseD the market near Viviani's house32.Which statement about Galileo is NOT true?A He was full of ideas.B He did a lot of experiments.C He was an Italian.D He gave his notes to Viviani.33.Which statement about Viviani is NOT true?A He kept Galileo's notes.B He was Galileo's student.C He passed on the notes to his daughter.D He was as famous as Galileo.34.After Viviani's death, the notes ____.A were given to one of his friendsB were left somewhere in his houseC were lostD lost its value35.It can be inferred from the story that ____.A the family was unaware that they had Galileo's notesB the librarian bought the notesC Viviani gave the notes to the familyD the shopkeeper informed the librarian of the notesPassage TwoA favorite story among acoustical (声学的) experts concerns a noisy Long Island suburb where, day and night, huge trucks thundered down a freeway, jet planes roared overhead, and a pumping station maintained a low, continuous thumping. One night all mechanical sounds stopped briefly; immediately half the people in the neighborhood awoke, sat upright, and exclaimed: "What was that?"Americans are drowned in noise, one of the unwanted and unnecessary waste products of the twentieth century. Scientists speak of noise in decibels -- units by which they measure the intensity levels of the sound waves that beat against our eardrums. The shuffling of paper in silent surroundings represents about 15 decibels;a low conversation, 40 decibels; and the sound of an automobile horn, 90 decibels. In general, sounds above 80 decibels begin to irritate the human ear. Noise also causes increased muscular tension, which at night may deprive the body of rest.Experiments have shown that 160 decibels of noise are fatal for small fur-bearing animals. Although equal exposure is not fatal to man, it may destroy hearing. Over the past thirty years the loudest sounds to which man has been exposed have increased from 120 decibels, the equivalent of the roar of a two-engine propeller plane, to 150 decibels, the blast of a four-engine jet. This is an average increase in volume of one decibel a year, and constitutes a potentially dangerous source of physical damage.36.The story about a Long Island suburb is retold in order to show that ______.A we may find it easier to fall asleep in noisy surroundingsB contrary to popular belief, mechanical sounds are bearableC nowadays suburbs are not just as quiet as we expectD noise pollution has become a very serious problem37.The author refers to noise as ______.A an undesirable waste productB an unnecessary mechanical soundC a source of mental illnessD a measurement of the intensity ofsound waves38.Noise may interfere with man's sleep by ______.A causing him to have terrible dreamsB distracting his attentionC increasing his muscular tensionD keeping him restless39.Sounds of 160 decibels may ______.A be the loudest man can imageB do physical damage to manC cause certain small animals to dieD Both B and C.40.The author's purpose in writing this passage is to ______.A draw our attention to the importance of controlling noiseB show that man has more tolerance than animals when exposed to noiseC give a brief introduction to sound measurementD illustrate that noise is a by-product of modernizationPassage ThreeIn recent years, large numbers of people are living a single life, at least temporarily, for this reason or other. However, they are often pressured to marry by their families and friends, who regard single adults as irresponsible and unfortunate.Rose and Bill talk about the frustrations and disagreements. Rose has quarreled with her family. Her parents continually ask her why she doesn’t get married and have been putting pressure on Rose to find a husband. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question. Then you should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneThe Swedes are among the most charming peoples in Europe. And their charm comes from an apparent contradiction in the national character. They are extremely conservative in social relationships; within the family and when meeting friends and business acquaintances, their conduct is governed by strict social patterns. At the same time, they are one of the most ntellectually progressive people in the world. They are always open to new ideas. All social occasions in Sweden are regulated by rules and traditions. And these traditions are expressed in a specific ritual (仪式) made up of formal bows, handshakes, and greetings. When a visitor enters a Swedish home, he is invariably received with a "Welcome"; when he leaves, his host will tell him "You will be welcome again". These charming phrases are an indestructible part of Swedish social life and they give it an old-world flavor of good manners.Equally attractive is the Swedish acceptance of modern technological equipment. A traveller never needs to search for a telephone in Sweden: telephone booths are placed at regular intervals along the main streets and highways. And in church, for example, long benches are fitted with hearing aids for worshippers who may be hard of hearing. Swedish homes are among the best equipped in the world and travellers in Sweden find their journeys made easy by the use of the most efficient modern devices.31. The contradiction of the Swedes can be found in ____.A) their strictness in social activities and friendliness in entertaining guestsB) their conserved attitude towards social relationships and openness to initiative ideasC) their clearly set social patterns and enthusiasm about big partiesD) their specific ritual and concern about good manners32."Invariably" in the second paragraph can be best replaced with ___.A) "often" B) "usually" C) "sometimes" D) "always"33. It cannot be inferred from the passage that the Swedes are ____.A) hard-working B) polite C) considerate D) efficient34. According to the passage, the Swedish social ritual doesn’t include ____.A) greetings B) bows C) handshaking D) embraces35. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A) People can hear the priest more clearly with the hearing aids in the church.B) The Swedes' homes are among the best equipped ones in the world.C) Travelers will be most satisfied when travelling in Sweden.D) It's very convenient to make a call in booths in Sweden.Passage TwoAuthor Steven Pincker, a scholar of linguistics, maintained thattraditional anthropology (人类学) has done humanity a great harm by focusing on the odd, unreasonable elements in human society. This has distorted our understanding of each other, separating us into the known and unknown, whatever our perspectives.Pincker’s point is well taken. He argues that should an extraterrestrial (外星人), for example, land on planet earth she would be struck not by these differences, which would be invisible to her, but by how much alike we all are. She would hear us speak, run human speech through her PDA (Personal Digital Assistance), and learn that all human speeches have nouns, verbs and modifiers. Each one of the 800 or so human languages has ways to express relative location (English uses avast array of prepositions for this purpose; other languages use case markers, or post-positional words, like Japanese). All languages express what is past, what is happening at the moment, and has ways to predict or plan future action. All have words and phrases to express hope and hopelessness, passion and friendship, anger and negotiation and apology. The extraterrestrial would say we all speak dialects of one common language.Pincker has noted that there are emotional and cultural universals that stretch across races, across national borders, with differences only in the slightest sense. All cultures value beauty, and a beautiful baby or woman or man is recognized as such whether African, Asian or European. All cultures cherish families and punish crime, and define crime in fairly similar ways.36.Pincker thinks traditional anthropology has laid too much emphasis on____.A) the differences among human beingsB) the similarities among human racesC) the differences between the human and the extraterrestrialD) the similarities between the human and the extraterrestrial37. According to Pinker, if the extraterrestrial comes to earth, ____.A) she will be impressed by the odd and dark sides of human beingsB) human beings tend to treat her in an odd and hostile wayC) she will first notice the common points in all human beingsD) she will be strongly impressed by the language of English and Japanese38. Which of the following point about human languages is NOT mentioned in the passage?A) They all have ways to express relative locations.B) They all have ways to express time.C) They all have ways to describe family and crime.D) They all have ways to describe feels.39. Pincker will most probably agree that ____.A) if we behave like the extraterrestrial, we can be happier and more contentedB) different peoples have different standards about beautyC) different languages on the earth are dialects of one common languageD) if we notice more of the common parts among human beings, we can live a morepeaceful life40. The author's attitude towards Pincker's theory is ____.A) critical B) ironical C) objective D) negativePassage ThreeMany people try every means to make themselves look younger and more attractive. Some even go under the surgeon’s knife to achieve the state of grace. Surgery that can improve the way a person looks is called cosmetic surgery, which is becoming more and more popular in the world nowadays. Both men and women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive in their jobs. Men especially are beginning to turn to facelifts, liposuction (taking fat out of the body), and implants (putting artificial parts into their bodies ) to help them look younger. As companies downsize and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. A younger look through cosmetic surgery may give an older employee a few more years on the job. These operations are not without dangers, however. One young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the dark bags under her eyes. She described her experience as terrible. She said, “When he sta rted cutting, I was fully awake. Even though he’d given me an injection near my eyes, I saw everything.” She went on to explain, “I knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was scraping away fat underneath myeyes. It took about ten minute s. After he finished, I felt I couldn’t walk. I was so faint.” Her troubles did not end after the operation. For two weeks, her eyes were swollen and almost completely closed, and even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.Liposuction, taking fat out of the body, is probably the most popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems simple enough. First, a small cut is made over the place where the patient wants the fat removed. Next, a small pipe is put into the cut. A machine like a vacuum cleaner is then turned on, and the fat is sucked right out of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems can happen after the operation. He warned, “Irregular lumps and loose skin can result from this operation. If it is no t evenly done, liposuction can produce a very lumpy result.” Patients often must have more liposuction to correct the problem.41. People spend money on cosmetic surgery because_____.A. it is become more and more popular in the world nowadaysB. it can keep them look youngC. it can help them keep their jobsD. both B to C42. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Cosmetic surgery can help people achieve the state of grace.B. Cosmetic surgery is not dangerous.C. Cosmetic surgery is a way to make people look younger by an operation.D. Both women and men try cosmetic surgery to hide their age.43. What can we learn form the third paragraph?A. This was an implant operation.B. The young woman was against cosmetic surgery. the young woman got.C. There were some side effects of the cosmetic surgery the young woman got.D. The young woman got an injection and didn’t know what happened during theoperation.44. What does not mention about Liposuction?A. Fat is taken out of the body.B. A small cut is made over your body.C. Artificial fat is put into the body.D. Fat is sucked out of body through a small pipe.45.
