专业英语八级词汇-11(总分:100.00,做题时间:90分钟)一、(总题数:5,分数:100.00)The second most important constituent of the biosphere isliquid water. This can only exist in a very narrow range oftemperatures, since water freezes at 0℃ and boils at 100℃. This isonly a tiny range compared with the low temperatures of some otherplanets and the hot interior of the earth, let the temperature of the sun. (1)As we know, life would only be possible on the face of a planet (2)had temperatures somewhere within this range. The earth's supply (3)of water probably remains quite fairly constant in quantity. A certain (4)number of hydrogen atoms, which are one of the main constituentsof water, are lost by escaping from the atmosphere to out space, (5)but they are probably just about replaced by new water rising away (6)from the depths of the earth during volcanic action. The total quantityof water is not known, and it is about enough to cover the surface of (7)the globe to a depth of about two and three-quarter kms. Most of it—97%—is in the form of the salt waters of the oceans. The rest is fresh, but three quarter of this is in the form of ice at the (8)Poles and on mountains, and cannot be used by living systemswhen melted. Of the remaining fraction, which is somewhat (9)fewer than 1% of the whole, there is 10-20 times as much stored as (10)underground water as is actually on the surface. There is also a minor, but extremely important, fraction of the water supply which is presentas water vapor in the atmosphere.(分数:20.00)填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:在let之后加alone)解析:[解析] let alone是固定搭配,意为“更不用说”,与原文想要表达的“与其他星球的低温和地球内部的高温相比,这只是一个很小的温度范围,更不用说和太阳的温度相比了”意思相符,因此在let后加alone。

When Europeans discovered the western hemisphere they discovered a race of people unlike any they had known. Columbus called them Indians because he thought that he had reached the East Indies. He took a few of them back to Spain with him to exhibit at the royal court. It was as if the first Americans to land on the moon had discovered a race of moon men and had brought some of them back to earth to show its residents and others. We can imagine the excitement if the moon men were scheduled to visit the campus of our university. Although Indians, or red men, as they came to be called also, were widely distributed in North, Central and South America when Europeans first arrived, I shall be concerned in this talk mostly with those in the region that is now the United States. I shall have something to say about their origin and early history, the consequences for them of European settlement in the New World, the part they have played in the history of the United States, and their number, distribution and condition today. Where did the Indians come from? How did they get to America? When did they come? How many were living in what is now the United States when Europeans made their first contacts? None of these questions can be answered as clearly as we would wish, but many scholars have dealt with them and we can find tentative answers. Most scholars believe that the homeland of the Indians was Eastern Asia and they migrated to North America along a land bridge from Siberia to Alaska. The migrations may have begun 25 000 years ago, or even before that. They probably went on for a very long time, and the Indians gradually scattered over vast areas. Thus when Europeans arrived, the Indians were very old residents, living in many regions. Perhaps a million were living in the area of the United States when the white men came. In all of New England, where the pilgrims began their settlement in 1620, there were then probably fewer than 20 000 Indians. The Indians were a diverse people. They lived in hundreds of tribes. They spoke many languages. They lived under many different conditions. They gained their living in different ways. Some Indians did considerablefarming; others did none at all. Some developed a way of life that depended on the buffalo that ranged the prairies and plains by the millions; others never saw a buffalo. Their dwellings were different. Indians of the northeast who lived in wigwams made of trees and barks would have been surprised to see the buffalo-skin teepees on the plains, or the cliff dwellings of the southwest. Tribal wars were carried on long before the coming of the white men. Every tribe lived close to nature and adapted to it, had its own myths, ceremonies and religious beliefs. Then came the white men. The white men had many things that the red men soon developed a desire for, ornaments, knives, guns, utensils, blankets, cloth, horse, whiskey. The red men had what the white men wanted, land, furs, and military power. Some white men both in the colonies and in Europe believed that it was the duty of Christians to bring Christianity to the Indians. It was thus inevitable that there should be many contacts between the two races. These contacts had tremendous consequences for the Indians. Guns revolutionized their hunting and warfare. Whiskey corrupted them. Christianity changed the lives of some Indians and brought conflict within tribes. The introduction of the horse by the Spanish changed the way of life of Indians in the west. The steady increase in the numbers of whites resulted in pressure being brought on the Indians to sell part of their lands and to move westward, to get out of the way of the white settlement. The Indians were under pressure also to take sides in the wars between European powers in America. For example, in the great French and British War of the eighteenth century (known as the Seven Years War) many Indians fought with the French in America and many others with the British. In one famous battle, which history records as a victory for the French over the British, most of the fighters on the French side were Indians. With the coming of large numbers of Europeans to America, life for the Indians could never be again what it had been before Columbus. The culture shock for them was very great indeed. The Indians made many efforts to prevent the advance of the frontier. Their attacks almost wiped out the early Virginia settlements. Isolated frontiersmen often found themselves in danger. In 1763 a great uprising against the British began under Pontiac, a Michigan Indian leader. Before the uprising was put down, the Indians had captured several British forts and had brought terror to the frontier. During the American Revolution many Indians sided with the British and caused much trouble for Americans on the frontiers. The History of American Indians When Europeans discovered the Western hemisphere, they discovered a race of people. 【1】______ called them Indians. Do sit down.B: Thank you.A: First of all, Mr. Pitt, I’d like you to tell me a bit about what you’ve been doing.B: Well, I left school after I’d done my A levels.A: Ah, yes, A levels. What subjects did you take?B: I took 4 subjects: French, German, Chemistry, and art. Chemistry wasn’t my cup of tea, but art has always been.A: Art?B: Well, I really want to study art. It didn’t turn out like that, because a friend of my father offered me a job--- he is an accountant in London. Quite a big firm, you know.A: I see. A firm of accountants. Interesting! In your application, you say that you only spent 9 mouths with this firm of accountants. Why was that?B: It was nearly a year actually. Well, to be quite honest, I didn’t like it.I just couldn’t seem to get interested in the job although there were fairly good prospects. So I got a place at the Art College to do a 3-year diploma course.A: I see. Now, Mr. Pitt, what about hobbies and interests? Uh, what do you do in your spare time?B: I like jazz, traditional and folk music. I don’t play, Of course, but I go to quite a lot of concerts, and I go to the theatre occasionally and act a bit myself. I’m in the local drama society. I read quite a lot and I’ve done a bit of photography. Also, I’ ve traveled a lot, hitchhiked all over Europe-- last year that was.A: Very interesting, Mr. Pitt. I think that’s all I wanted to ask about your background. Now let’s talk about the management trainees’ scheme. What exactly do you think a manager does?B: I... don’t know a great deal about the work.A: But you have got any ideas about it? You must have thought about it.B: Well, er, I suppose he has a lot of what’s called”policy-making” to do and he’d have to know how to work with people and all about the company.A: UmmB: Yes, I should think a manager must know something about all aspects of the work.A: Yes, that’s right. We like your executive staff to undergo a thorough training. Young men on trainees’ scheme have to work in every branch of the company.B: Oh.A: And one of them is accounting. Presumably you wouldn’t like that.B: Well, if I have to do it, I suppose. But I was thinking that my French and German would mean that I could specialize in overseas work. I would like to be some sorts of export salesman, and travel abroad.A: You know the glamour of traveling abroad disappears when you’ve got a hard job or work to do. It’s not all fun and game.B: Oh, yes. I realize that. It’s just that my knowledge of languages would be useful.A: Now, Mr. Pitt, Is there anything you want to ask me?B: Well. There is one or two things. I’d like to know if I’d have to sign a contract and what the salary and prospects are?A: With our scheme, Mr. Pitt, there is no contract involved. Your progress is kept under constant review. If we at any time decide we don’t like you, then that’s why we reserve the right to dismiss you.B: I see.A: Of course, you have the same choice about us.B: Fair enough. And ... what about the salary?A: As for salary, you’d be on our fixed scale starting at 870 pounds. For the successful trainee, the prospects are very good.B: I see. Thank you very much.A: That’s all, Mr. Pitt. You should hear from us in a couple of weeks, one way or the other, or we may ask you to come back for another chat. Supachai Panitchpakdi says most WTO nations have indicated that they want to complete the so-called Doha round of trade talks by 2006. But the director general of the World Trade Organization says finalizing the negotiations requires a consensus of the 148 member nations. And that, he says, means they must work hard over the next several months to finalize details of the wide-ranging agreement. “This means them will be no deal until there is agreement on the whole negotiating package, because there are linkages between different subject areas,”he said. “The 2006 deadline is feasible, I am confident, is still feasible. At least one was hung upside down from his ankles and beaten. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice. The main idea of these business-school academics is appealing. In a world where companies must adapt to new technologies and source of competition, it is much harder than it used to be to offer good employees job security and anopportunity to climb the corporate ladder. Yet it is also more necessary than ever for employees to invest in better skills and sparkle with bright ideas. How can firms get the most out of people ff they can no longer offer them protection and promotion? Many bosses would love to have an answer. Sumantra Ghoshal of the London Business School and Christopher Bartlett of the Harvard Business School think they have one: “Employability.” If managers offer the right of training and guidance, and change their attitude towards their underlings, they will be able to reassure their employees that they will always have the skills and experience to find a good job—even ff it is with a different company. Unfortunately, they promise more than they deliver. Their thoughts on what an ideal organization should accomplish are hard to quarrel with: encourage people to be creative, make sure the gains from creativity are shared with the pains of the business that can make the must of them, keep the organization from getting stale and so forth. The real disappointment comes when they attempt to show how firms might actually create such an environment. At its nub is the notion that companies can attain their elusive goals by changing their implicit contract with individual workers, and treating them as a source of value rather than a cog in a machine. The authors offer a few inspiring example of companies—they include Motorola, 3M and ABB—that have managed to go some way towards mating such organizations. But they offer little useful guidance on how to go about it, and leave the biggest questions unanswered, How do you continuously train people, without diverting them from their everyday job of making the business more profitable? How do you train people to be successful elsewhere while still encouraging them to make big commitments to your own firm? How do you get your newly liberated employees to spend their time on ideas that create value, and not simply on those they enjoy? Must of their answers are platitudinous, and when they are not they are unconvincing.21.We can infer from the passage that in the past an employee ______.A.had job security and opportunity of promotionB.had to compete with each other to keep his jobC.had to undergo training all the timeD.had no difficulty climbing the corporate ladder正确答案:A解析:本题是推理题。
