In the film, the family gets in this trouble. But the rule doesn in this trouble. But the rule doesn’’t work in China. In China, parents have the right to beat them when children don the right to beat them when children don’’t obey their words.From the movie, Datong slaps Dennis because he wants Dennis to apologize to Paul but Dennis refuses. Paul Paul’’s father can can’’t understand him at all. However, Datong says that it is to show his respect to him and give him face. Chinese think that the child is their private property. He is my son so he is mine. I can beat him because he does not obey my words. But in America, every one is equal, including parents and children. In American American’’s eyes, it is illegal to beat someone. Parents seldom decide something for their children. They want their children to fight for themselves.2.2 The difference in ethical standardsChinese pay more attention to the whole and we think that everyone should devote himself to the family. In traditional Chinese culture, filial piety is one of the most important things. In the film, we can see that Datong admits that he does Gua Sha to his son. He doesn Sha to his son. He doesn’’t want his father to worry about Dennis so he tells his father nothing. He takes Dennis out of the welfare centre to meet with his father who will go back to Chinese. However, American values themselves. They are educated with independent spirit. They do not have strong feelings with their family.There are also many differences in the views on friendship. Stewad and Bennet discuss American friends: "Although Americans keep many friendly and unofficial ties, but they rarely make those deep. At the same time, when People choose friends, they also make it separate from others." However, it is different in China. We want to have several close friends. And as a friend of mine, you should help me to do many things without a return. When Datong Datong’’s boss in the court admits that Datong has beaten his son, Datong thinks he is my friend but he betrays me. And the boss believes that he just says the truth. Integrity is an important virtue in America. American won ’t tell a lie even though he is your friend.2.3 The difference in the views on the traditional Chinese medicine theoryWe can see it from the origin of different cultures. The philosophy of China and America are different. The western people prefer rationalism while the Chinese like exploring the relationship between the nature and human. In the court, Datong tells them what Gua Sha is. But nobody can understand him. Even his lawyer finds it too difficult to understand.3 ConclusionThe film reflects many differences between American and Chinese cultures. At the same time, it also expresses cultural assimilation. In the movie, the American man Queensland searches for a clinic to try Gua Sha. We can see that American is willing to learn Chinese cultures. The film has a happy ending, but it also ignores some cultural differences. On the culture shook in the firm of “the treatment”——by Che yinan Culture shock is a long term psychological stress that all human beings experience when they move to a completely new cultural environment, especially when a person arrives in a new country where he is confronted with a new cultural environment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate.There are five causes of culture shock: culture stress, social alienation, financial matters, social class and poverty-wealth extremes and relationships and family consideration.What’s more, there are many kinds of symptoms of culture shock. We can divide the symptoms of culture shock mentioned above into two aspects: physical and psychological. Some of the physical symptoms of culture shock include: too much sleep or too little sleep, eating too much or having no appetite, frequent minor illnesses, upset stomachaches or headaches, and a general feeling of uneasiness. Psychological symptoms are insomnia, fatigue, isolation and loneliness, disorientation, frustration, criticism of new country, depression, nervousness, self-doubt, irritability, anger, and emotional and intellectual withdrawal.The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new place, though sometimes can take longer to surface. Culture shock likes a disease, has causes, symptoms and cures.Culture shock is frequently described as a series of stages that a person gose through. There are five stages. In the beginning, people are usually excited about what they will experience in the new environment; this stage is called the honeymoon stage, as everything encountered is new and exciting. Soon they feel disappointed by what they actually experienced, this is the second stage called hostility stage. The third stage is the recovery stage; this is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. The new arrivers may not feel as lost as before and start to have a feeling of direction. They are more familiar with the environment and want to identify themselves with it. At the fourth stage, people realize the new culture has good and bad things to offer. People start to define themselves and establish goals for living. The last stage is the biculturalism stage, at this stage people become able to cope comfortably in both home and new cultures. However, full adjustment can take years.Generally speaking, culture shock can be alleviated, or minimized. What follows are some suggestions for enhancing the international business experiences by reducing clashes with the local culture. Learning throughout your stay. Get involved. Master simple tasks. Try to understand. Learn to live with ambiguity. Be empathetic. Be flexible and resourceful. Be humorous. These suggestions can help new arrivers go through such uncomfortable experience.There are so much difference between the Chinese culture and the American culture. From the movie Gua sha we can know the different. And this movie shows usabout the culture shock. In Chinese culture, physical punishment is commonly used by Chinese family. They think this will help to growing up. But in western society is absolutely forbidden. Any abusing children were viewed as illegal conduct. Gua sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient’s acupuncture acupressure massage points. It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any English used this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both son and daughter-in-law were at work.China is a country that has a long history. In long history, china forms her own unique ethics-paying attention to youth, and paying attention to ancestor worship. “He is a Chinese” so Da tong must tell a lie to protect his father. It doesn’t be understood by his boss because only those people who grow up in our land can truly understand its meaning. Besides ‘hit you because of loving for you’ also doesn’t be understood by Dennis, leading to endless conflict. In addition, the different medical theory also leads that Da tong are misunderstood. These are the cultural differences between East and West.As to show respect to friends, Da tong xu punished his son physically in front of friend. But this was misinterpreted as violence by his foreign friends. This is misunderstanding in culture between East and West. How to avoid the tragedy of the story? We must strengthen the east-west cultural exchange and learning, and only with respect to different cultures and inclusive will it be possible to avoid the culture and values of conflict. Da tong was understood by everyone, family friend and fore, even through he has the best intentions, and he carried the responsibility quite heavily, making him do one wrong turn after another. The film Gua sha reflects the difference of value and culture views between western society and orient society. China society has been receiving impact of Confucianism for thousands years. Confucianism is known as paying regard to human relationship and ethic. Piety, courtesy and localism are most important ethic. But in western culture that is more emphasis on individualism, independence and equality. So conflicts in culture and value are unavoidable. These conflicts have shown in the story.Different countries, different ethnic cultures are equal and no difference between high and low but a nation’s cultural awareness, cultural tolerance, is a very important matter. In this modern world, different cultures need to take in others’ advantages, and we need to have the ability that cross-cultural communication. As to the reason, the invisible nature of one’s cultural beliefs also makes it difficult to impossible to explain yourself to others when questioned, but even though there are many differences between east and west, I believe that misunderstandings can be nullified with simple, two sided explanations when people are willing to listen patiently, just like the film’s end all misunderstandings are gone. This is my opinion about the culture shock.。

Culture Shock
Sometimes, you find it easy with the topic Cross-culture Conflict and you can get all aspects involved in your article or discussion and analyze them thoroughly. However, it may hurt even when you’re confronted with only one aspect of it. GUA SHA the Treatment is an example right here. I wish that such culture shock will never happen to me after seeing the film.
It all started when Grandpa applied the Chinese traditional treatment—GUA SHA on Xu Datong’s five-year-old son, which triggered a tri al for abuse. And it’s the series of misunderstanding followed that makes me feel anxious and depressed, even angry and impatient to some extent. Maybe for most Chinese, the westerners’ verdict from the court in this film seems ridiculous and we can’t figu re out why Americans made such simple things so complicated. And what’s more, the way westerners interpreted Xi You Ji in the film really put us on the spot—not only because they seemed so ignorant of Chinese traditional culture, but also they tended to depreciate the figures that have been long occupying a high status in our minds.
To put it in a nutshell, the controversy intended to be reflected in the film, is a twist of our Chinese concept of moral by westerners. Can you imagine a scenario where almost everything embedded in your mind is entirely negated by others around you? Can you bear it when the way you take care of your kids is regarded as abuse, and even take away your kids from your side claiming for better protection from your kids’ parents? If I were Xu Datong in the film, I would have fought back more fiercely, and more desperately.
Many people conclude it as a cultural shock. Of course it is. But as far as I’m concerned, I see more arrogance from the Americans.
I can’t stand it that America sh ould restrict foreign cultures with what they think reasonable, and even control others’ thoughts and normal behaviors. I can’t see much so-called mutual respect for cultural diversity on the lengthy American law. And how could Americans say that the safeguard the human rights whilst their laws destroyed a happy family in the film?
GUA SHA the Treatment serves as a qualified reflection of the so-called humanity rights and some aspects of the
western culture. Americans are supposed to know that their laws, however lengthy, can never cover the Chinese thousands-year-old traditions.
