A former Mayo doctor is calling it “a Christmas miracle” that he survived being trapped overnight Dec.19 on a_frozen_North Dakota field after breaking his leg on a hunting trip.

Richard Olsen said the biggest lesson fro m his accident is people shouldn’t let fear and uncertainty prevent them reaching out to see if someone is all right, something Olsen said probably helped save his life.

Olsen was hunting on a cousin’s land near Watford City.On Dec.19,he tried a new spot and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip.He walked more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.Suddenly he stepped on a thin crust of snow.It collapsed and dropped him four feet to the bottom.

“I knew immediately I was in trouble and I was going to hurt myself,” Olsen said.“I was suddenly picking up a lot of speed.” His left leg hit, which was badly injured.

He lay on his side to reach for his gun, unloaded it and used it as a stick. He spent an hour and a half climbing. When he was partly up,he slipped and slid back down.“I told myself that if I didn’t get myself out of that cave,I wasn’t going to have a very good night,” Olsen said.

He worked his foot free and climbed more slowly and carefully out of the cave.Olsen immediately realized the task before him.The accident occurred about 4 p.m.,and it was nearing 7 p.m.with the road far away as the sun was setting.

Olsen focused on crawling(爬) to safety.Even with his gun,Olsen found it was impossible to walk.Instead,he sat down and pushe d himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg.“I’ve always been stubborn. We all face moment when we must be very persistent.Crawling on my backside was worth it to get back to my family,” Olsen said.Progress was exhausting and required frequent breaks.

【答案】Temperatures dropped below zero.He knew he was at risk of being frozen. His hands and foot soon were completely numb. His dogs had been playing in the field and eventually came up,trying to help him.Olsen finally reached a fence near the road.Another steep cave full of snow stood between the fence and the road.He feared his exhausted and rapidly freezing body wouldn’t be able to climb out of the cave.

Not finding any way to the road,he decided to sit by the fence and wave down a driver.During the next half an hour,he waved and shouted, but six vehicles passed without stopping. He said he didn’t blame those drivers, who either didn’t realize he needed help or were fearful for their own safety. At last,a driver stopped his truck, and ran up to Olsen, who was completely white with a clearly injuredleg. The driver was able to determine Olsen, who was crying in relief, was trying to tell him about the injury and being outside all night. He wrapped Olsen in a sleeping bag and blankets after calling the police.

42.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

There was once a town where the thing everyone feared the most was getting lost at night in the “Cave_of_Fear”.No one had ever returned from there, and whenever anyone got lost and ended up there, the last that was heard was a great cry of terror, followed by a few enormous guffaws(大笑).The townsfolk lived in terror that one day the_monster would leave the cave.So they regularly left gifts and food at the mouth of the cave, and these always soon disappeared.

One day,a young man came to the town, and,as he heard about the situation with the cave,he thought that it was unfair. So he decided to enter the_cave and confront the monster. The young man asked for some help, but everyone was so afraid that not a single person approached the mouth of the cave with him.He went inside, finding his way with a torch, and calling out to the monster, wanting to talk with it and discuss the_situation.At first, the monster had a good long laugh, and the young man followed the sound of the monster’s voice. But then the monster went quiet, and the young man had to carry on,not knowing in which direction to go.

Finally he arrived at a huge cavern.At_the_bottom of the cavern he thought he could make out the figure of the

monster, and as he approached it,he felt that something hit him hard on his back. This pushed him forward towards a hole in the rock.He couldn’t avoid it,and fell through.Believing that he was about to die,he let out one last cry. Then he heard the great_guffaws.

“Darn it,I think the monster has swallowed me,” he said, whilst falling.

However,as he fell,he heard music, and voices. They got clearer, and when he made a soft landing at the bottom,he heard a group of people shout:“Surprise!”

【答案】Hardly believing it,he found himself right in the middle of a big party. The people in the party were all those who had ever gone into the_cave but never returned to the town. They explained to him,“As a matter of fact, this place was the idea of an old mayor of the town.He wanted to teach the townsfolk a lesson and enable them to learn something from it.”

The mayor had tried to accomplish great things, but was always held back by the fears of the people around him.So the mayor invented the story of the_monster.He wanted to show people in the town how such an attitude was so limiting. As a result, the “Cave_of_Fear” came into being. So the young man stayed there, enjoying the party and all those who had dared to approach the cave were all around. However, what about the town? What about other townsfolk? In the town they still believe that to enter the Cave of Fear is the worst of all punishments.

Getting my daughter to answer her cell phone almost always results in hearing Lady Gaga screaming back at me.If I send her a message,I will get a response within 30 seconds. What I receive, though,is a number of letters and jargon(胡言乱语) that I don’t understand, such as “ttyad” for talking to you after dinner,“hk” for hugs and kisses or “idk” for I don’t know.

There is something greatly missed when a human voice is replaced_by a buzz(蜂鸣声) on my cell phone. As technology becomes more advanced and realtime,a gap between parents_and kids is created.Plain and simple, the skills of basic communication are becoming out of date.Cyber slang(网络俚语) and acronyms(首字母缩略词) are replacing the inherent need for real conversation and human interaction.

As this generation develops a language understood by their peers exclusively, parents are less in tune with what their kids are mixing with.

As a mother,it is my opinion that this new way of interaction will do harm to their social skills. As these kids enter into adulthood and into the workforce and mature relationships, they will be at a disadvantage.True communication is not just words;it is body language, voice inflection and the way we carry ourselves.

【答案】The two generations are no alike in their viewpoints and preference.Teenagers are increasingly seen to be beyond control.Nowadays, many parents have difficulty communicating openly and honestly with their kids. They don’t have much in common.Parents can’t keep pace with their children.Teens can’t just talk about whatever they need with their parents and they don’t want to share thoughts and feel ings with their parents. The communication between them becomes hard.

There are many reasons why teens and their parents cannot communicate effectively. Most obviously,it is because parents are unable to understand their kids:their clothes, language, likes, dislikes, and so on.On the other hand, young people nowadays are very casual in using words_to communicate with their parents regardless of the feelings of them.So parents and children should understand each other and communicate with each other frequently. Thus they will get along well with each other.

If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.” “No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.” The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm. It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)! Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer. Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him. She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!” Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit (追寻) of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him. Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼)is Wednesday.” Memories flashed(闪现)through his mind like an old newsreel (新闻短片) as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. “Jack, did you hear me?” “Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said. “Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce (回忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it, ” Mom told him. “I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said. “You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence (影响) in your life,” she said. “He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important. Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said. Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away. The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly. “What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked. “The box is gone,” he said. “What box?” Mom ask ed. “There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. “Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly. 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已为你写好; 4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

Dana told him everything was a quarter except Nezumi, a cotton toy rat. It was gray with some cotton sticking out from the hole where an ear had been torn off. "Nezumi is extra special, so he's ten dollars. He needs a safe new home." Dana sighed. Tim laughed saying he didn't have ten dollars. Dana laughed, too and gave Nezumi to Tim as a free gift because he was her friend. When Tim whispered it was sort of old, Dana said old toys were the best. She then invited Tim to her birthday party the next evening, adding that her parents were giving her a real rat for her birthday. Tim was amazed and asked if it was a live rat. "Of course," Dana said. At home, Tim's mother showed him the gift she had bought for Dana. It was a knitting spool (编织线轴) shaped like a mushroom. Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll. Tim sighed that Dana wasn't a knitting kind of person but a rat kind of person. Mom laughed after knowing what had happened. Together they drove to the pet store, where Tim searched and searched and selected a clear plastic ball, one in which the rat could run around on the floor safe from cats and dogs. Tim thought of Nezumi's ear and decided Dana's new rat would need this ball. The next day, Dana brought cupcakes to class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim, she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks. Tim was at a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed. Then Dana asked what gift he was giving her. Tim replied it was a surprise. In silence they sat for a while before he heard Dana say her parents were giving her a new bike for her birthday instead of a live rat because they thought rats would bite things. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 应使5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后, 请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: At home that afternoon, Tim stared at the plastic rat ball.

They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least.
