AThe country is India. A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by acolonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and anAmerican naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an armyofficer. The girl insists women have long outgrown thejumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouseera, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men.“A woman's reaction in any crisis," the officer says,“is to scream. And while a man mayfeel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has."The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of theother guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of thehostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers tohim. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor theservant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait fora snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the roombut he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place - under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movementwill frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arrestingthat it quietens everyone.“I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will countthree hundred - that's five minutes - and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying ..o.. hundred and eighty.."when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four orfive screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors.“There is your proof!" the host says.“A man has just shown us real control."“Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess,“How did you know that cobrawas in the room?"A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she repli es. “Because it was lying across myfoot.""21.What is the argument between the army officer and the young girl about?A. Whether women are afraid of mice.B. Whether men are calmer than women.C. Whether men are cleverer than women.D. Whether women would make suitable soldiers.22. The rising popularity of other types of entertainment.D. The greater acceptance of black performers by white audiences.26. In which period did musical theatre become more complex and dramatic?A. Pre - 1900.B. 1900- 1929.C.1940- 1949.D.1950- 1959.27. What can be reasonably inferred about the musical West Side Story?A. It told its story in a new way.B. It was based on a true story.C. It was a non-Broadway show.D. It was not very successful at first.CIn 1874 Francis Galton, a British professor, analysed a sample of English scientists and foundthe vast majority to be first-born sons. This led him to theorise that first-born children enjoyed aspecial level of attention from their parents that allowed them to advance intellctually. Half acentury later Alfred Adler, an Austrian psychologist, made a similar argument relating to personality.First-born children, he suggested, were more diligent, while the later-born were more outgoing andemotionally stable. Many subsequent studies have explored these ideas, but their findings have beenvaried - some supporting and some rejecting the original conclusions. The main problem with the previous studies is that they were too small - often limited to afew dozen individuals. This would be true even if the statistical methods needed to analyse the datawere simple, but they are not. Distinguishing birth-order effects from those caused by family sizecomplicates matters, meaning still bigger samples must be analysed to obtain meaningful results. To overcome the limitation of these earlier studies, German social scientist Dr. HelmetSchmukle and his colleagues analysed three huge sets of data from America, Britain and Germany. These data sets, though collected for other purposes, included personality and intelligence tests on20, 186 people at different stages of their lives. The American tests were on individuals aged between29 and 35. The British tests were conducted on 50-year-olds. The German tests ran the whole span ofadult life, from 18 to 98.Birth order, they found, had no effect on personality: first-borns were no more, nor less, likely than their younger siblings to be hardworking, outgoing or anxious. But it did affectintelligence. In a family with two children, the first child was more intelligent than the second60% of the time, rather than the 50% that would be expected by chance. On average, thistranslated to a difference of 1.5 IQ points between first and second siblings. That figure agreeswith previous studies, and thus looks confirmed. It is, nevertheless, quite a small difference - and whether it is enough to account for Galton'soriginal observation is unclear. In any event, it is certainly not deterministic. Galton was theyoungest of nine.28. Alfred Adler concluded that first-born children were.A. more stableB. more sociableC. more intelligentD. more hardworking29. What does the underlined“they" in paragraph 2 refer to?A. The data.B. The analyses.C. The previous studies.D. The statistical methods.30. Why was Schmukle's study considered superior to previous research?A. It involved a wider age range.B. It had a much larger sample size.C. It included a larger number of countries.D. It was conducted over a longer period of time.31. Why does the author mention Galton's family background in the last paragraph?A. To confirm Galton's difficult upbringing.B. To suggest Galton's theory may not be correct.C. To compare his experience with Galton's parents.D. To explain why Galton was interested in birth order.DPhotography has opened our eyes to a multitude of beauties, things we literally could nothave seen before the invention of the frozen image. It has greatly expanded our notion of whatis beautiful, what is aesthetically(审美上) pleasing. Items formerly considered trivial, and notworth an artist's paint, have been revealed and honored by the photograph: things as ordinary as afence post, a chair, a vegetable. And as technology has developed, photographers have exploredcompletely new points of view: those of the microscope, the eagle, the cosmos. What is it that delights the human eye and allows us to claim that a photograph is beautiful?Photography depends on the trinity of light, composition, and moment. Light literally makes therecording of an image possible, but in the right hands, light in a photograph can make the image soar. The same is true with composition. What the photographer chooses to keep in or out of theframe is all that we will ever see - but that combination is vital. And the moment that the shutter ispressed, when an instant is frozen in time, provides the whole image with meaning. When thethree - light, composition, and moment - are in balance, there is visual magic.Light, composition, and moment come together in a photograph to bring us the ultimatereality: a view of the world unknown prior to the invention of the camera. Before photography, thebasic artistic rules of painting were rarely broken. Images were made to please, not to capturereality. But as photography evolved, painterly rules were often reacted in the pursuit of fresh vision.Photographers became interested in the real world, good and bad, and it was the accidental detail thatwas celebrated. Photography invited the world to see with new eyes - to see photographically - andall of the arts have drawn new inspiration from this change. With these basic aesthetic tools, photographers have evolved from scientists longing to“fix"an image - any image - to artistic revolutionaries. Photographs have created a new way of seeing, changed our ideas of beauty and, most importantly, made art more democratic. They have given usvisual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, and that there is beauty, often overlooked,in nearly everything.32. Before the invention of photography, which of the following was least likely to appear in an artistic work?A. A great person.B. A lovely insect.C. A grand building.D. A beautiful landscape.33. What is the function of paragraph 2?A. To argue that photographic beauty is subjective.B. To explain the evolution of the concept of beauty.C. To describe the elements that make a successful photo.D. To illustrate different types of photographic techniques.34. How has photography affected other art forms?A. It has reduced their popularity.B. It has forced them to change their rules.C. It has changed their methods of composition.D. It has provided them with new points of view.35. What does the author mean by saying photography has“made art more demo cratic" ?A. It has expanded the concept of artistic beauty.B. It has challenged the status of traditional art forms.C. It has enabled the development of new artistic tools.D. It has allowed more people to take part in creative activities.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Between 1987 and 2017, manufacturing output grew 80 percent, but the number of workers dropped dramatically. This hit cities hard, leading to shrinking populations and the wide difference between urban places we see now.Numerous studies show that automation isn't equally affecting the workforce across all sectors. While it has negatively impacted a portion of the economy, it has helped to lift up other sectors, such as computer science and health care. The real question is how you counteract inequality. To start with, we should train people with the skills they need. To minimize job losses and embrace positive changes, we need to focus on the great value humans bring to the table. Jobs requiring soft skills like time management, active listening, cooperation, and judgment and decision﹣making, and jobs that are in high﹣touch industries are much less likely to be automated. We must make joint efforts to strengthen and fix the holes in the safety net. AWith all the attention Thanksgiving and Christmas get from travellers, it’s easy to overlook Halloween as a destination holiday. While a few cities provide a ghostly atmosphere all year round, annual festivals, theme park pop-up events and other haunted happenings elsewhere have helped make the holiday a travel mini-season all its own.New OrleansHome to year-round cemetery walks, New Orleans is among the cities that naturallyharmonize with Halloween. Worth noting every October is the family-friendly Halloween parade, happening this year on Oct. 21, with floats devoted to themes like werewolves and vampires. Float riders throw locally made candies to the crowd. New Orleans hosts plenty of after-event-parties, but the procession itself draws all ages in costume.Whitby, EnglandThis picturesque town on England’s Yorkshire coast is considered to be the home of Dracula, though in a different way. Bram Stoker spent just a month in Whitby, but those four weeks in July and August 1890 were important in the creation of his most famous book, “Dracula”, which was published in 1897. Whitby celebrated the 125th anniversary of Stoker’s visit in 2015, but this year you can see the s keletal remains of Whitby Abbey illuminated throughout the final week of October.Salem, MassachusettsHome to the infamous witch trials of the early 1690s, it should come as no surprise that this town is a hotbed for Halloween activity. One way Salem builds on its spectral past is with the nearly month-long festival of the Dead. Events starting from mid-October this year include psychic readings, mourning-themed tea and on Halloween night, a witches gathering.Orlando, FloridaThe home of Disney World and Universal Studios goes all-out with huge Halloween events. Universal this year will hold its 27th Halloween Horror Night on Oct. 30, a seasonal pop-up featuring haunted houses and “scareactors” employed to frighten visitors. Plus, there are many other activities like trick-or-treating, Disney character encounters, a Halloween ball and fireworks.21. Which of the following is most recommended for a family going together?A. New Orleans.B. Whitby, England.C. Salem, Massachusetts.D. Orlando, Florida.22. Where do Halloween activities last the longest this year?A. New Orleans.B. Whitby, England.。

They made the arrangements for the car, hotel and bicycles. I studied the history of the island, which of course particularly features Napoleon. Napoleon (now I know) picked Elba as a place for peace when he was forced to give up the throne (王权) as Emperor of France in 1814. Far from being a prison island, Elba is beautiful with towering mountains, thick forests and sweeping bays and beaches. It is also an island filled with treasure. Very early on this island, locals discovered rich deposits of iron. Soon outsiders, too, discovered the iron and 150 other valuable minerals on this little piece of land. Long before Etruscans and other Greeks set foot on it, Dorians had moved in by the tenth century B. C. and were mining the island. The Romans ruled next, obtaining the minerals and building grand houses overlooking the sea. From the twelfth century until the nineteenth, the island was traded back and forth and was passed to France in 1802. Then came Napoleon, the new ruler of Elba. 圳市教育科学研究院市教育科学I was eager to visit his house in Portoferraio. The Emperor lived with his court and his mother, but his wife, Marie Louise had ensconced herself in the splendid Viennese palace of her father, Emperor of Austria. She lived safely there and showed little interest in visiting her husband in his mini-kingdom. Apparently, Napoleon wasn’t troubled much by this. He was too busy riding everywhere on horseback, building roads, modernizing agriculture and, above all, sharpening his tiny army and navy into readiness for his escape. In the formal gardens behind the house it seemed to me that I could imagine the exiled (流放的) conqueror ’s anxious thoughts. He might gaze over where I stood now, toward the lighthouse of the Stella fort, the sandy bay, and across it, the green mountains of the Tuscan coast. Napoleon spent only ten months here before making his victorious return to France and the throne. 28. What did the author do for the visit to Elba? A. He did research on its past. B. He arranged transportation. C. He planned bicycling routes. D. He booked accommodation. 29. Who might be the earliest outsiders to Elba according to the text? A. Napoleon and his army. B. Etruscans and other Greeks. C. Dorians. D. Romans. 30. What does the underlined word “ensconced ” probably mean? A. Settled. B. Locked. C. Cured. D. Controlled. 31. What came to the author’s mind during his visit to Napoleon’s gardens? A. Beautiful views on Elba. B. Terrible living conditions on Elba. C. Napoleon ’s ambition to regain power. D. Hardship of Napoleon ’s return to France. D An international team of researchers from the University of Oxford have found that the way people use the Internet is closely tied to the seasonal movements in the natural world. Their online species searches follow the patterns of seasonal animal migrations (迁徙). Migratory birds (候鸟) flood back to where they reproduce every spring. That migratory behavior is accompanied by some human behavior. “In English-language Wikipedia (维基百科), the online searches for migratory species tend to increase in spring when those birds arrive in the United States,” said the lead author John Mittermeier. And not just birds. Mittermeier and his team surveyed nearly 2.5 billion Wikipedia search records, for 32,000 species, across 245 languages. They also saw variable search rates for insects, horsetails and flowering plants. Seasonal trends seemed to be widespread in Wikipedia behavior for many species of plants and animals. This finding suggests new ways to monitor changes in the world’s biological diversity. It also shows new ways to see how much people care about nature, and which species and areas might be the most effective targets for conservation. 圳市教育科学研究院市教育科学Mittermeier is encouraged by the search results. He commented, “I think there ’s a concern among conservationists (生态环境保护者) that people are losing touch with the natural world and that they ’re not interacting with native species anymore. And so in that sense, it was really exciting and quite unexpected for me to see people ’s Wikipedia interest closely related to changes in nature.” Richard Grenyer, Associate Professor from the University of Oxford, says search data is useful to conservation biologists, “By using these big data approaches, we can direct our attention towards the difficult questions in modern conservation: which species and areas are changing, and where are the people who care the most and can do the most to help.” 32. What have researchers found about species searches? A. They strengthen ties among people. B. They affect the animal movements. C. They differ in language backgrounds. D. They reflect animal migration seasons. 33. What is the purpose of writing Paragraph 3? A. To summarize the research process. B. To further support the research findings. C. To show the variety of species searches. D. To present researchers’ heavy work load. 34. How does Mittermeier feel about the search results? A. S atisfied with Wikipedia’s service . B. Worried about Wikipedia behavior. C. Amazed at people ’s care about nature. D. Sad about people ’s not getting close to nature. 35. Why does Richard think such search data is useful? A. It helps to aim at conservation targets. B. It increases interest in big data approaches. C. It keeps track of trends in biologists’ work. D. It pushes people to solve difficult problems. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

According to the National Geographic, the Southern Ocean includes most of the waters surrounding Antarcticaout to 60 degrees south latitude(纬度)."Encircled by the powerfully swift ACC, it is the only ocean to touch three others and to completely embrace a continent rather than being embraced by them," Sylvia Earle, a marine biologist and oceanographer, told the Daily Mail. Those familiar with the Southern Ocean know it's unlike any other. "Anyone who has been there will struggle to explain what's so charming about it, but they'll all agree that the glaciers are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more awful and the landscapes morecaptivatingthan anywhere else you can go," Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told National Geographic.National Geographic hopes their revised maps will bring public awareness to the region, thereby encouraging Southern Ocean conservation—but its significance is beyond that."We think it's really important from an educational standpoint, as well as from a map-labeling standpoint, tobring attention to the Southern Ocean as a fifth ocean," Alex Tait, National Geographic Society geographer, told The Post. "So when students learn about parts of the ocean world, they learn it's an interconnected ocean, and they learn there are these regions called oceans that are really important, and there's a distinct one in the icy waters around Antarctica."4. Why is the Southern Ocean different from other oceans?A. It has never been explored before.B. It surrounds the Antarctic all around.C. It is enclosed by the fast-flowing ACC.D. It has ecologically distinct environment.5. What does the underlined word "captivating" in paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Strange.B. Unusual.C. Attractive.D. Informal.6. It will draw scientists to study in the Antarctic.7. What is the best title for the text?A. World Oceans DayB. Revised Antarctic MapsC. Adding a New OceanD. New Discovery under the SeaCWhether for a special holiday, as a way of showing gratitude or just a way of letting someone know you care, gift giving is a universal custom Though the purpose may be similar from place to place, traditions vary widely from one country to the next. A behavior that shows respect in one place might be consideredoffensivesomewhere else. Take a look at unique gifting traditions from around the world. Here in theUS, a set of kitchen knives seems like the perfect gift idea for a wedding. However, in certain European countries likeGermany, people believe that a knife presented as a gift will cut off your friendship. There is a way to break it: Tie a coin to the knife or gift box. The receiver then returns the coin to you as a “payment”to remove the bad luck. There's a well-known Italian wedding tradition where the groom's (新郎) tie is cut into a number of tinypieces. Wedding guests can then "buy” these tie pieces in exchange for cash. It's a fun way to give money to the new couple thatleaves guests with a wedding souvenir. As left hands are considered unclean in Indian culture, behaviors such as touching, passing money, or giving gifts are to be done with the right hand. Different from some other cultures , an odd number (奇数) of thingsor currency represents good luck. For example, £11 should be given rather than £10.InZimbabwe, it is common to directly ask for a gift. When you receive a gift without asking for it, even if the giver's family is poor, it's the worst way to reject the offering. Also, expressing thanks with actions is better than giving thanks orally (口头地).These may include jumping up and down, dancing, or whistling.8. What does the underlined word “offensive“ in paragraph 1 refer to?A. Rude.B. Creative.C. Suitable.D. Caring.9. How do people prevent friendship breaking down when giving gifts like knives?A. The guests cut the groom's tie into pieces.B. The receiver returns the coin to the giver.C. The giver gives gifts with the right hand.D. The receiver expresses thanks by dancing.10. A Special Custom of Gift GivingDThe Native American of northern California were highly skilled at basketry, using the reeds, graeses, barks, and roots they found around them to fashion articles of all sorts and sizes-not only trays, containers, and cooking pots, but hats, boats, fish traps, baby carriers, and ceremonial objects.Of all these experts, none excelled the Pomo-a group who lived on or near the coast during the 1800's, and whose descendants continue to live in parts of the same region to this day. They made baskets three feet in diameter and othersno bigger than a thimble (顶针). The Pomo people were masters of decoration. Some of their baskets were completely covered with shell pendants;others with feathers that made the baskets’ surfaces as soft as the breasts of birds. Moreover, the Pomo people made use of more weaving techniques than did their neighbors. Most groups made al their basketwork by twining--the twisting of a flexible horizontal material, called a weft, around stiffer vertical strands of material, the warp. Others depended primarily on coiling-a process in which a continuous coil of stiff material is held in the desired shape with tight wrapping of flexible strands. Only the Pomo people used both processes with equal ease and frequency. In addition, they made use of four distinct variations on the basic twining process, often employing more than one of them in a single article.Although a wide variety of materials was available, the Pomo people used only a few. The warp was always made of willow, and the most commonly used weft was sedge root, a woody fiber that could easily be separated into strands no thicker than a thread. For color1 , the Pomo people used the bark of red-bud for their twined work and dyed bullrush root for black in coiled work. Though other materials were sometimes used, these four were the staples in their finest basketry. If the basketry materials used by the Pomo people were limited, the designs were amazingly varied. Every Pomo basket maker knew how to produce from fifteen to twenty distinct patterns that could be combined in a number of different.12. But I also believe in the philosophy that we are not defined (定义) by what happens to us, but by what we do when things happen to us.Some friends think we have had far more t han our share of bad things occur, but I don’t think bad things are shared. They are events that occur as the result of many aspects, sometimes far past our control or even knowledge of them. I am also a firm believer in the laws of unintended consequences — one event causes things that are quite unexpected, sometimes positive, sometimes not.So as I considered the question of “W hat motivates me?” and sought an answer, it struck me that I simply refuse to be defeated. I won’t let life or events tear me down to the point at which I am no longer me, or simply stop being. In 2008, I battled three types of cancer, had four cancer operations, the firm I worked for closed without notice, my wife was in a horrible car accident, got laid off from her company, the economy devastated our life savings, … and that was for starters. We also lost two family members and my closest friend. He was the last person I would expect to pass away out of our friends. But a disease took hold of him 9 years earlier. His memorial service was filled with love, and many of us told about his joy of life, humor, his achievements, and the challenges he had overcome in his life —which were many and painful. He would not be defeated in his life either.Today, my wife and I are hand-in-hand, continuing trying to live our lives with dignity, although living it differently from the end of 2007.4. Which of the following does the author most agree with?A. We should take our share of bad things.B. One event may cause many unexpected results.C. Many bad things could have been prevented by us.D. Humans are sometimes defined by their surroundings.5. Which of the following can best describe the author’s experience in 2008?A. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.B. He who laughs last laughs best.C. Misfortunes never come alone.D. No pains, no gains.6. What does the underlined word “devastated” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Destroyed.B. Increased.C. Supported.D. Included.7. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the te xt?A. To complain.B. To advertise.C. To encourage.D. To explain.CChris Mazdzer won a silver medal in a men’s luge (无舵雪橇) singles event at 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, South Korea —equaling the best finish ever for any member of the US Olympic luge team. In the luge, competitors lie flat, feet first, on a small sled (雪橇). They can travel around an icy track at speeds up to 140 kilometers an hour. The riders control the sled’s speed by changing the position of their feet or by moving their shoulders. So why did the US luge team win a medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics? Most credit must go to Chris Mazdzer himself. The American said his win was a product of 16 years of preparation and intense training. But another reason for Mazdz er’s success could have been the 3-D printing technology, which his team used to make its equipment. The term 3-D is short for three dimensional, meaning an object with length, width and height. In 3-D printing,3-D models are first created as files, or documents, on a computer. The printer then uses a substance (物质) like plastic or metal to create physical objects. The process involves making one layer of material at a time until the objects reach full form. The US luge team worked with an American company called Stratasys on the designing and manufacturing process for the sleds. First, the company made a scan, or image, of the body of every member of the luge team. Then, 3-D printing technology was used to create tools for making molds (模子) in the shape of Olympians on top of a sled. The process of designing and tooling sled parts is highly complex and can take several weeks. Officials from the US luge team say 3-D printing can greatly simplify the process, speeding up the production of parts.Jon Owen, says the use of 3-D printing has made the team more competitive. It helps the team “continuously adjust designs and run the sleds on the track much faster than traditional processes,” he said. He added that the technology also provides a way to perfectly fit each rider to the sled, while cutting production time and costs.8. According to the author, what mainly contributed to Mazdzer’s winning the medal?A. His own great efforts.B. His using a new technique.C. The cooperation with his luge team.D. The US Olympic luge team’s encouragement.9. To make the sleds for the team, what did the company have to do?A. To create tools for making sled parts.B. To take some photos of the members first.C. To create molds according to the members’ bodies.D. To ask the Olympians to be present for several weeks.10. From the last paragraph we learn that 3-D printing most probably __________.A. saves plenty of competitors’ training timeB. helps competitors achieve their full potentialC. requires great skills of riders to fit the trackD. allows riders to change their sleds continuously11. What is the text mainly about?A. How 3-D printing usually works.B. How we take advantage of 3-D printing.C. How the US luge team performed this year.D. How 3-D printing helped Team US go for gold.DThe Dunning-Kruger effect is a type of cognitive bias (偏见) in which people believe that they are smarter and more capable than they really are. Essentially, low ability people do not possess the skills needed to recognize theirown incompetence. The combination of poor self-awareness and low cognitive ability leads them to overestimate their own capabilities. This phenomenon is something you have likely experienced in real life, perhaps at a holiday family gathering. Throughout the course of the meal, a member of your extended family begins spouting off on a topic, boldly announcing that he is correct and that everyone else’s opinion is stupid, uninformed, and just plain wrong. It may be plainly evident to everyone that this person has no idea what he is talking about, but he talks continuously, blithely oblivious (忘乎所以) to his own ignorance. The effect is named after researchers David Dunning and Justin Kruger, two social psychologists. They found incompetent people are not only poor performers, they are also unable to accurately assess and recognize the quality of their own work. These low performers were also unable to recognize the skill and competence levels of other people, which is part of the reason why they consistently view themselves as better, more capable, and more knowledgeable than others. This is the reason why students who earn failing scores on exams sometimes feel that they deserved a much higher score. They overestimate their own knowledge and ability and are incapable of seeing the poorness of their performance.“In many cases, the incompetent are often blessed with an inappropriate confidence, encouraged by something that feels to them like knowledge.” Dunning and his colleagues have also performed exper iments where they ask respondents if they are familiar with terms related to subjects including politics, biology, physics, and geography. Along with genuine concepts, they added completely made-up terms. In one such study, approximately 90 percent of respondents claimed that they had at least some knowledge of the made-up terms. So what can you do to gain a more realistic assessment of your own abilities? Instead of assuming you know all there is to know about a subject, keep digging deeper. Once you gain greater knowledge of a topic, the more likely you are to recognize how much there is still to learn. Another effective strategy involves asking others for constructive criticism. While it can sometimes be difficult to hear, such feedback can provide valuable insights into how others perceive your abilities. Even as you learn more and get feedback, it can be easy to only pay attention to things that confirm what you think you already know. In order to minimize this confirmation bias, keep challenging your beliefs and expectations and seek out information that challenges your ideas.12. What can we learn about the Dunning-Kruger effect from the first paragraph?A. The Dunning-Kruger effect is rare for us to confirm.B. Incompetent people can be blind to their own ignorance.C. Ignorance leads people to underestimate their own abilities.D. Poor self-awareness and low cognitive ability have a close connection.13. According to the Dunning-Kruger effect, what do incompetent people tend to do?A. Underestimate their own skill levels.B. Feel more realistic about their competence.C. Recognize their own mistakes and lack of skills.D. Fail to recognize the genuine skill of other people.14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A. The meaningless terms may cause respondents to feel ashamed.B. The participants pretended to know what they actually didn’t know.C. The aim of the experiments was to assess how smart the participants were.D. Most of the respondents claimed they were unfamiliar with the make-up terms.15. Which is the way to overcome the Dunning-Kruger Effect?A. Ask people for helpful feedbacks.B. Minimize the bias and challenges.C. Assume that you know everything.D. Gain confidence and trust yourself.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
