Everyone wants to win a first-place blue ribbon, to be the best in something. Even kids in Kindergarten want that blue ribbon. In sports, I was never a blue-ribbon person. In a race, I was always 11 . In baseball I was likely to be hit on the head or drop the ball. During the spring of my kindergarten year, our class had a field trip to a park in a town about twenty miles away. Making that drive now is no big 12 but when you’re six and you’ve lived in a town of 300 people all your life, going to a big town of a couple of thousand people is really something.
I don’t remember too much about it. But there was one that I will never forget —the three-legged race. The parents tied our feet together. One little boy got me for a 13 . He was the second most 14 boy in our class so he usually won at everything and I knew that with me tied to him he didn’t have a chance. And I’m sure he knew he was in trouble. The gun sounded and we were off. Some couples were falling and stumbling all around us, 15 we stayed on our feet and made it to the other side. 16 , when we turned around and headed back for home, we were in the lead! Only one couple had a chance to win, and they were a good several yards behind us.
A few feet from the finish line, disaster struck: I tripped and fell. We were 17 enough that my partner could have easily dragged me across the finish line and won. But he didn’t. Instead he stopped, 18 down and helped me up — just at the other couple crossed the finish line. As a result, we received a small red ribbon for coming in second.
I still remember that moment when the young boy decided that helping a friend get on her feet was more important than winning a blue ribbon. And 13 years later, I still have that little ribbon because it’s a 19 that a friend like this boy is one who really 20 .

When my daughter was very young, we went on holiday to Portugal. One day, she found a starfish(海星) that had been baked hard in the sun. We looked at it together wondering how wonderful these creatures were. Then I threw it aside on the beach and got back to reading my book.
11 , she got the starfish back, filled her Frisbee (飞盘) with sea water and put the little fellow in there. After about an hour, she brought the Frisbee over to me to announce that the starfish was 12 . I had previously seen it as stiff as a board and so, at first, I just thought that this was a bit of her childhood 13 at work. But she pointed out that the fish was moving toward the edge of the Frisbee that was in the shadow. She then turned the Frisbee to expose the fish to the sun and very 14 the starfish made its way back to the shadow on the other side.
With the logic of a girl of five years old, she then asked if she could keep it as a pet. After I had 15 why she couldn’t, I told her to throw him back into the sea. She then asked me if she could have it just for one night. I thought she had earned the right, so I 16 . She brought some fresh sea water in her bucket and 17 it as best she could.

When I was little, my family used to move frequently. Before I could even get acquainted with my schoolmates, my family was on the move again. I became very 11 because of this.
But a girl with dark skin and long shiny hair changed me. Her best characteristics are her openness and 12 . She is always smiling, like a beautiful sunflower following the sun. Without doubt I enjoyed being with her and soon we became good friends. As time went by, I graduall y became a happy girl. But this joyful period didn’t last long. We were admitted to different colleges. I felt like I had gone back to my always-on-the-move childhood. I felt 13 and helpless and I was afraid that I would 14 her as my best friend. She stayed calm and said to me: “Rain, you can achieve more than I do, so 15 to your dreams and make a big effort! Real friendship doesn’t fade and we will be best friends forever.” Maybe she didn’t realize what a great 16 she was to me at that time.
However, it turned out that my concerns were well-founded (有根据的). I felt that the 17 between us was getting bigger and bigger. One day, she sent me a text message happily telling me that she had fallen in love with a handsome boy in her class.
I felt happy for her, but at the same time I was secretly worried about our friendship. I 18 her several times intending to tell her to think carefully about her relationship with the boy, but I got no more messages from her. I felt sad that perhaps our friendship would not 19 . I had almost given up hope until she visited me at my campus a week later. She looked pale but was wearing the most beautiful smile. She gave me a big hug and said: “I’m sorry. I want to be myself
and your friend forever!” We crie d together, ignoring the people walking past. She told me her sad story, and we knew we had gone back to how it was before.

After six months of living in New Zealand, I realized one thing. Despite my 11 for greater contact with local students, unless I initiated t he contact, it wouldn’t happen. Local students are not interested in contacts with the international students, because they regard us as shy, 12 and sometimes snobby (势利的)people. Of course we know that’s not true. I want to change their opinions.
After 13 the problem, I put on my “confidence mask” each morning and walked around with a smile on my face. I chatted with people whenever I had the chance. I showed that I was not afraid to 14 them, and that I was worthy of being a friend.
A side-effect of my 15 confidence was that my emotions occasionally broke down Only in the 16 of my room, where no one could see, would I reveal my real emotions. All the rejections, funny looks, and 17 behind my back calling me a weirdo(古怪的人)melted into tears. Once that was done, I would put on my confidence mask once again and start a new day.
It finally worked. My name became known throughout the school as I appeared to be 18 and active. Slowly, I discovered that I no longer needed to put on my confidence mask. I had real friends. Instead of dragging myself to school and 19 to be happy, I was truly happy. I could
not believe it when I was elected to the student government as Deputy Head boy----the first international student to receive the title.
From my experience in New Zealand, I believe one thing will always be true: If you try your best to reach your goals, you’ll achieve your 20 dreams.
