Which animal is "man's best friend"? We all know it's the dog. Dogs have earned the love and respect of humans. Many have given their own lives to save people. Dogs are faithful and devoted. For example, Bobby, a Skye terrier, went to market with his Scottish master every day. After the man died, Bobby would not move from his grave. He stayed there for about 10 years. He stayed ________________.
Dogs serve many useful functions. They are good at watching and herding sheep. Wherever sheep are raised, a sheep-herding dog is developed. For instance, there is the German Shepherd dog. In Scotland, there is the Shetland sheep dog. Both are recognized breeds.
Specially trained dogs lead the blind. Such dogs are carefully selected. It takes about three to five months to train them. Guide dogs will refuse to cross a busy street unless the traffic has stopped.
One interesting dog is the St. Bernard. How did it get its name? It was developed by the monks of the St. Bernard Monastery. This is located in the Alps of Switzerland. The dog weighs
from 140 to 220 pounds. It's one of the heaviest of all dogs.
St. Bernards are famous for rescuing travelers lost in the snow. They have a wonderful sense of smell. They find people buried under several feet of snow. A St. Bernard named Barry rescued 40 persons. This was over a period of years.
There is a popular misconception about these dogs. They do not carry flasks around their necks. Sir Edwin Landseer misrepresented them this way in a painting.

Here is a statistic(数据) that will surprise you. More young people are killed each year by sleepy drivers than by drunk drivers. This proves one thing. Getting enough sleep can be a big problem. How are we dealing with the problem? Sleep clinics are popping up all over the United States. They are always working to find out more about sleep.
Driving when tired can be very dangerous. During the daytime, over half of drivers report feeling sleepy at some point. At night, over 80 percent of drivers sometimes get drowsy. And here is the most frightening of all. Almost one-quarter of all drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel.
What is going on here? One thing is that people are not getting enough sleep. One person out of three gets by on less than six hours a night. _______________________. Others fall asleep easily, but then wake up time after time. Few people get enough of the deep sleep they need to feel really rested.
Here are some facts to remember. Believe it or not, people need seven to nine hours of nighttime sleep to remain healthy. During that sleep, a person's immune system is built up. This helps fight off diseases and infections. And taking a nap in the daytime does not really help. It will make a person feel refreshed. But it cannot make up for the lack of nighttime sleep.
What if you are a person with real sleeping problems? What if you have tried all the home remedies like hot milk? You might consider going to a sleep clinic. Many such clinics look for volunteers. They will study your sleep problems, and you will not have to pay anything.

5. Here is what to do when you get up. Open the shades or blinds. Let the sun in. Open the windows. Let the fresh air in. This sun and air get imprinted on your brain. Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests ______________ - or so we hope. We all like to imagine that we're getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle (奇迹) of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process (过程). But growing old? That's a different story.
Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, "You're as young as you feel." Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least "young at heart."
Many older Americans find the "golden years" to be anything but golden. Economically," senior citizens often struggle just to get by. Retirement(退休) at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security (安全) benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition (营养), medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination. In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely-even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.
Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged "baby boomers" are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles (皱纹) are "in". Marketing experts are already noticing this growing group of consumers.

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (学会) of each new skill - the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is common that parents hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, and a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, ___________________________, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm (热情)for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters; others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality (准时) for meals. In general, the controls imposed (强加的) represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community (社区) as much as the child's own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

Two pieces o f foreign news caught people‘s attention. In the US, 18-year-old Michael Sessions won the mayoral(市长的)election in his town, to become the youngest mayor in the US. A similar thing happened in Britain. Martin Halstead, a high school graduate at 19, set up his own airline company.
Chinese teens admire their skills in getting such important posts. But have you ever thought that you could have the same success?
Burdened with heavy school work, many high school students in China are told to lock themselves in their studies and forget about other things.
But actually this is not wise.
Everyone is different and there is no need to follow the life paths of our ancestors(祖先). Sessions had dreamt of being a politician since he was a child. Halstead is crazy about airplanes and took every chance to learn about them.
So why not think outside the box, as these boys did? Consider your interests when planning your own path through life. Doing this can be more exciting and makes it easier to succeed. Interest is our best teacher.
But dreaming is not enough. A good education is a stepping-stone to a successful career. It helps broaden your horizons so you understand more about yourself and therefore perform better. That‘s the reason Sessions chose while taking charge of his town.

How to protect child Web fans from unsuitable material online while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed .
For some parents , the Internet seems like a jungle , filled with dangers for their children . But jungles contain wonders as well as dangers . With good guides and some education , the madness for the Internet can be safely conducted . ―Kids have to be online . If we tell our kids they can‘t have access to the Internet , we are cutting them off from their future .‖
Most kids have started to use search engines . Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites , but they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go . There are search engines designed just for kids . One certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe .The most popular way to limit access would be t o use what is known as a ―content screener‖. But this can be wholly reliable , and
the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet . Another way is that Mum or Dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet .
A few other tips :
Don‘t put the PC in a child‘s room but where Mum or Dad can keep an eye on things . That also makes the Internet more of a family activity .
Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make online .
Tell your child not to give online strangers personal information , especially like address and phone number .
And tell your child never to talk to people he or she meets online over the phone , send them anything , accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along .

Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burn it before. A really fearless soldier-and some do exist-is not a good solider because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an airplane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter falls on you, or you may get cancer!
The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that ____ to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course, of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you , and you have to try to overcome it .
