Unit10 The world around us
Unit 10 The world around usⅠ.Teaching Goals:1.Talk about ways to protect the environment.2.Talk about wildlife endangerment.3.Review Direct and Indirect Speech.4.Write about causes and effects.Ⅱ.Teaching Time:Four periodsⅢ.Background InformationⅠ.Animals and Their LanguagesAnimals, including insects,do not have a language like ours. They do not talk with each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them,we can see that they do have ways of communicating(交流) with each other. Can you see the rabbit’s tail? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal. Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra(眼镜蛇)is angry,it raises its hood(颈部皮褶)and makes itself look fierce(凶猛).This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food,it goes back to its home.It can’t tell other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.Some animals say things by making sounds.A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near.A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way.We make sounds like“Oh〞or “Ah〞when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes. But we have something that no other animals have—a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do.No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.Ⅱ.Conservation of Nature Is Necessary1970 was “World Conservation Year〞.The UN wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would act quickly in order to conserve(保护)nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1 300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives here.We can’t live without these things. If it continues like this,we shall destroy ourselves. What will happen in the future?Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now?〞The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today.A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on.In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of eleven kilometres of their river.Young people may hear about conservation through a record called NO ONE’S GOING TO CHANGE OUR WORLD.It was made by the Beatles,Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.Ⅲ.Milu DeerThe milu deer is a kind of deer, which is a rare and unusual species. It has another Chinese name si bu xiang,a little of four animals, because it has antlers of a deer, the neck of a camel, the hooves of a cow and the tail of a donkey. It is the biggest of all kinds of deer. They are an extraordinary species because they haven’t been in the wild for two thousand years.A long time ago, they were living in the marshland hunted of our country and were the main animals hunted by our ter they disappeared in the wild because of the vicissitudes of nature and hunting too much. For many dynaties they existed only in the imperial hunting park on the outskirts of Beijing. They are unusual in other ways. They are the only deer that have the gait of a horse. They walk, trot, canter and gallop which no other deer does.In 1894 the walls of the Imperial Hunting Park in China were washed away in the Great Floods. The deer escaped into the countryside.Four years later during the Boxer Movements whatever deer remained were slaughtered for flood or shot by foreign troops. Some of them were captured and taken to the foreign countries by foreigners. After 1900,they were only seen in an English zoo and a French zoo.In 1985,38 milu deer were brought from England by our government. They were kept in the park built on the outskirts of Beijing, which is part of the former Imperial Hunting Park. The milu deer have come home and since then, their numbers have been increasing year by year. The First PeriodTeaching Aims:1.Do some listening and speaking practice to improve the students’listening and speaking skills.2.Learn something about the
Most people are inspired by something in their lives. My inspiration came from my sister Vicki, a kind and caring person. In the summer, I received a phone call from my father saying that Vicki was sent to the hospital. She had a serious brain problem and the doctor didn’t give her more than three months to live.I was overcome with shock and sadness, but I decided that Vicki needed hope and encouragement. I went to the hospital every day to encourage Vicki to fight against the disease. The month of August arrived and new term was st arting, but I didn’t want to go to sch ool. All I wanted to do was staying with Vicki. She became angry and told me not to worry because she would be fine. After going back to school, I would talk to Vicki, "I’m fighting for you and I will never quit. As long as you never quit fighting we will beat this."A few months had passed and she was still holding on. One day w hen I talked about Vicki’s situation with my friend, she asked a question that really made me think. She said, "Do you think the reason why she hasn’t gone is that she doesn’t want to le t you down?"Maybe she was right. Maybe I was selfish for encouraging Vicki to keep fighting. That night before falling asleep, I said to her, "Vicki, I understand that you’re in a lot of pain and that you might like to go. We didn’t lose you because you never quit fighting. If you want to go to a better place then I understand. We will be together again soon. I love you and I’ll always be with you wherever you are."Early the next morning, my mother called to tell me that Vicki had passed away.Notes:1. inspire v. 放弃[ 阅读练习 ] Music 音乐[ 写作点评 ] Music and MeIf you ask me what the most important thing in my life is, I will say music. My father is a pianist. I always like to sit on the floor beside the piano, watching my father’s f ingers dance on the keyboard. When the beautiful sound fills the whole room, I feel like I am flying with the music.I think that music is an international language that people from all over the world communicate with each other. Isn’t it amazing? I like to play the violin and the piano. I have joined the music club in my high school and I put on performances at big parties at the end of the term each year. My dream is to be a famous musician.I want everyone to enjoy the music I make.。

本文通过课文“ Are we endangered ”?
