语言是人类与动物最大的分水岭。有了语言,人类才得以交流思想,向前人和其他人学习,总结经验,依靠思想的进步改变我们的生活方式和生产方式,而不必像动物那样依靠缓慢的自然选择和自然变异。

由于英语在世界上的强势地位,美国人很少学外语。一般学校里教的外语,主要是西、法、德等西方语言。然而,随着中国经济的快速发展和国际地位的日益提高,越来越多的美国人开始学习汉语。根据美国语言学习研究中心的调查,目前至少有600多所美国大学提供专门的中文课程, 2000多所中小学已经将中文列为选修课程,甚至一些幼儿园也开了中文课。
