When I was a senior-one student, I changed schools. The first lesson I had in the new school was the most impressive lesson I have had and

it will stay with me forever. It was an English lesson. I felt for behind my classmates, because I could not understand what the teacher said. My English teacher, Miss Wang, was not angry at how poor my English was. She showed her respect for me by teaching me just like anyone else.

Instead of being ignored, I was given chances to answer some questions. Though they were not brilliant answers, they did establish the fact that I could speak English. Later she asked me to point out a mistake from my classmate’s answer, which established me as a smart person. From then on, I started to build up my confidence and worked hard to make

progress in my English learning.

With more and more cars becoming popular means of transportation

for many families in our society, our life style is changing greatly.

Automobiles have several advantages. Above all, it offers people freedom to go where they want to go. Besides, traveling to work by car is more comfortable, for they don’t have to waste their time waiting for

buses or underground trains. In addition, much of the world’s economy is built on producing automobiles and supplying roads, services, and repairs for those vehicles.

In spite of their advantages, automobiles have many harmful effects

on human lives. Cars often produce air pollution and fill the cities with unbearable noise. Moreover, cars are the major cause of road accidents. To own a private car in China today will bring you not only financial

burden but also other troubles such as keeping the machine in good

repair, finding a parking place at night.

In my opinion, car is a necessary evil in the modern society. When

we use it, we can not ignore the problems it has brought about.

Dear Haiqing,

It’s so good to hear from you again. I’m fine and I enjoy my work

very much.

I can see what upsets you at the moment but I don’t think you shouldfeel like that. Appearance never tells the truth. Famous brands don’t makefamous or successful people. It is a person’s character and ability that

really count. Although one’s choice of clothing tells somewhat about one’s personal interest and taste, it is one’s accomplishment in self-cultivation

that makes the difference but not necessarily the brand of his clothing or the make of his car or bike he’s riding. To get possession of some

famous brands might help you become a center of attention temporarily,

but it can’t win you ever-lasting respect from others if you fail to prove yourself a well-educated person. Let’s make full use of our time at school to learn more and try out best to become useful to the society. This is

what I’d like to share with you.

By the way, what’s your plan for the coming vacation? Would you
