I love English and public speaking, so I was super excited when I was chosen to be one of the hosts for the 14th FLTRP Cup National English Debate Competition! This is a huge debate contest for students from all over China.Being a host is a really important job. We have to make sure everything runs smoothly and that all the debaters and judges feel welcome. There's a lot to do to get ready!First, we had to learn all about the procedures and rules for the debate. There are two teams - the Government team who argues for the motion, and the Opposition team who argues against it. Each team has three speakers. The first speakers lay out their main arguments, then the second speakers rebut and respond to the other team. The third speakers sum everything up and make their final case.There are also reply speeches where each team gets to respond to the other team's arguments. It's sort of like a volleyball game where you keep hitting the ball back and forth! The judges watch very carefully and score each speaker on things like their logic, evidence, rebuttals, and speaking style.As hosts, we have to explain all of these rules very clearly to the audience at the start. We also introduce each speaker before they give their speech, and we keep track of the timing with stopwatches and handbell signals. If a speaker goes over their time limit, we have to politely let them know by ringing the bell.Another big part of our job is to make the debaters feel relaxed and comfortable. Public speaking can be sonerve-wracking, especially in a huge competition like this! So we try to be friendly and encouraging when we interact with them. We welcome them warmly when they arrive and show them where to sit. We also double check that they have water and anything else they need.Right before the debate starts, we lead the debaters and judges in from the holding room in a processional line. We walk very slowly and formally. Then we have the debaters shake hands with the judges to show good sportsmanship. After that, we turn the time over to the chair judges who facilitate the actual debate.During the debate, we have to stay very focused. We keep an eye on the timing and scoring, and we ring the bells or signals when needed. We also try to have good posture and avoid any distracting movements or noises. You never know when the cameras might be on you!Sometimes there are delays or issues that come up unexpectedly. Like one time, a speaker accidentally knocked over a glass of water in the middle of their speech! As the host, I had to calmly call for a brief pause to clean up the water so the speaker could continue. Little things like that can be flustering in the moment, but it's our job to stay composed.When the debate is over, we have another processional where we lead the debaters and judges out. Then it's time for the judges to deliberate and decide on the winners while we reset the stage for the next round. The scoring judges sometimes need our help finding data or double checking facts the debaters cited.Finally, it's time for the awards ceremony! This is probably my favorite part. We call all the teams back and announce the winners. We get to hand out trophies and medals to the top speakers and teams. It's so rewarding to see how excited and proud they are after all their hard work. I just love the feeling of celebration and accomplishment in the air!Being a host at a huge national English debate like this is a lot of responsibility, but it's also so much fun. I feel very honored to play this important role. It really takes confidence, focus, and people skills. And last we offer you our policy and the reasons, benefits to carry out this policy.The first is about the definition.(Bell) We define today’s motion that “universities” which means public universities, which are mainly founded by the Ministry of Education. The second focus of our definition is about “based on population”. We define our motion to be “university entrance slots should be allocated to provinces MAINLY proportionately based on population”.Secondly, we tell you some status quos. The first status quo is that some provinces, some populous provinces with great population receive a dis-proportionally university entrance slot, like Shandong province, Henan province, or Jiangsu province: although with large population and higher education quality, they receive dis-proportionate university entrance slots. And second, some local students, where those universities located, receive an over-proportionate university entrance slot. And this status quo has caused mainly three harms. Harm No 1 is that for those populous provinces, those children are less likely to be admitted to better universities, which added extra burden and pressure for them to compete in the college entrance examination, which will do harm both to them mentally and physically. Those unnecessary extra pressure have done very great burden. I see there are some students coming from Shandong province and Henan province. I think that you may understand those pressure when you are preparing college entrance examination. The second harm is about equality. As we know, some areas like Beijing, or some local areas receive an over-proportionate college entrance slots, while other populous provinces receive an under-proportionate entrance slots. This produces in- (un)equality and unfairness, which we believe is doing harm to Chinese equality to higher education. Ok, I take your point.Meng Hansi: I just want to ask what’s your definition of population. Is it the students’ population or just the local people’s population?Thank you. The population which is registered in the state’s council of different provinces of general population is our definition of “population”.And the third harm is the harm done to those development to those provinces. As we know, like Shandong province, Henan province, they receive a less proportionate college admission, which means that those children in these provinces are less likely to receive better education. As we know the higher education is crucial for one province’s human resources and potential to develop. Compared with those privileged areas, these populous states receive a discrimination and under-privilege, which will do harm to their development in the long run.Now we will introduce you our criteria in judging this debate today. The first criteria is that we want to promote equality in higher education. Second, we want to promote equality between different provinces.Now we will introduce our policy. Actually, a similar policy… there has been present(president) a similar policy by Chinese Political Science & Law University since 2006. The detailed policy consists of two steps: first, the university will reserve some privilege university entrance slots for those ethnical minority students and those students coming from under-developed areas as it was all that by the national policy, like Tibet or Qinghai provinces, which is part of the status quo. So for those ethnical minorities and students coming from undeveloped areas, our policy is to keep this status quo. And the second policy, for the remaining majority slots, we want to use these slots divided by the 1.3 billion, which is the currently population of China, then multiple the population of each province so as to get the slots distributed to each province. This is our two-step policy, which has been carried out and experimented by CPLU, Chinese Political Science & Law University, since 2006. And it hasbeen successfully carried out in Shandong province, in Henan province and ensured those students’from these provinces’interests and their rights.And now I’ll tell you some benefits to carry out this policy. The first benefit is to relief the burden of those students from the populous provinces. By taking a higher proportionate from the status quo in Shandong province or in Henan province, we actually relieve the burden and pressure for these students because they now need not to fight that fiercely, compete that fiercely, compared with the status quo, and relieve their burden, relieve their pressure, which will do good point to both their mental health and physical health.OK. Lady first.Jiang Yuan: Actually you are increasing the burden of the students coming from the provinces which have less population, ‘cos you see the slots will be less, so we can’t see much of your…That is the appropriate pressure. Suppose that our proportion for each province is 10%. And currently in Beijing, the proportion is 20%. But in Shandong province the proportion is 5%. We mean if the appropriate proportion is 10%, then those students in Beijing are too relaxed because they do not have too much pressure.(Bell) For those students from Shandong province, they are too much pressured. So by our policy, we want to adjust the pressure and make each student receive appropriate pressure. We are not increasing pressure for those students from less populated areas.And our second benefit. We promoted equality and fairness between different provinces because they receive an equal proportionate college entrance slots. And the third benefit is that we balance those differences between different provinces and help them to develop in a long run because we know human resources is crucial in the21st century for this country, for every province. So if each province can receive approximately the same level of higher education, it will do good to all these provinces and to promote a harmonious society, to promote all these provinces in a harmonious way and in an equal way. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to the 18th FLTRP Cup English debating competition.
Today it is the final competition.
The topic today is “Mobile phone shielding devices should be installed in all college teaching buildings.”I’m your host ess____.
Through a fierce competition, 8 groups from 东湖campus and 东南campus come to today’s finals,and I wish everyone here could enjoy the competition tonight.
Now it’s my great honor to present our distinguished judges for the finals. They are Miss ,Miss ,Mr ,Mr and Miss 。
Welcome!
First of all, let’s go over the rules of the finals. The competition is divided into two rounds. Before the first round, both sides should give a self-introduction of their teams including the name and major of each member.
The teams supporting the motion are referred to as the "Proposition team." The teams arguing against the motion are known as the "Opposition team". Each team has four members. Two members give the speech of the presentation part and the other two give the speech of the conclusion part.
Each speaker will present a single speech within seven mimutes.
Timing of the speech begins when the speaker begins speaking;
all materials—will be timed. Once time’s up,speakers have a 15-second ‘grace period’, duri ng which they should conclude their remarks and new matters are not allowed.
The first part is presentation time. Firstly, the prime minister of proposition will have 7 minutes to state the opinions. Then, leader of the opposition will go next. Points of Information are allowed after the first minute and before the last minute of all speeches.
Secondly, the deputy prime minister of proposition will have 7 minutes to state the opinions. Then, the same to the deputy leader of the opposition.
The second part is summary and conclusion time.
Firstly, the member of the proposition will have 7 minutes to make a conclusion. Then, the member of the opposition will go next. Secondly,the proposition whip will make a conclusion within 7 minutes. Then, the same to the opposition whip.
