II. History and Significance
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that has a history of over 2,000 years. It is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar.
The festival commemorates the life and death of the famous poet and statesman Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period of ancient China. Qu Yuan was known for his patriotism, and when his kingdom was invaded, he drowned himself in the Miluo River out of despr. People tried to save him but fled, so they began to throw sticky rice balls wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. This is believed to be the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival.
III. Customs and Traditions
1.Eating Zongzi
–Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food made of sticky rice, wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed or boiled. It is shaped like a pyramid and usually filled with various ingredients such as beans, meat, or nuts. During the festival, it is common to eat zongzi to commemorate Qu Yuan and ward off evil spirits.
2.Dragon Boat Races
–Dragon boat races are one of the most exciting and popular activities during the Dragon Boat Festival. People compete in long, narrow boats decorated like dragons. Teams row their boats to the beat of drums and try to be the first to reach the finish line. The races sy mbolize the search for Qu Yuan’s body in the river.
3.Wearing Silk Threads and Sachets
–It is a tradition to wear colored silk threads around the wrist during the Dragon Boat Festival. These threads are believed to protect people from evil spirits and bring them good luck. Additionally, people often hang small sachets filled with medicinal herbs and spices around their necks or in their homes to ward off evil spirits.
4.Hanging up Spiderwort and Calamus
–Spiderwort and calamus are two types of plants that are commonly hung up during the Dragon Boat Festival. Spiderwort is believed to dispel evil spirits, while calamus is thought to repel insects. These plants are usually hung on doors or in windows as a form of protection.
