“Tom!”

The boy was surprised to hear his name called. He stopped walking, looking around, only to find himself alone in the woods.

“Tom, it’s me speaking.”

It was a tree! Tom felt frightened.

“I need your help, my boy. Please sit down and listen to my story.”

Tom was standing there, speechless with his mouth open wide, staring at the speaking tree.

“In the next 15 days, woodcutters are coming to cut me down because they think I am dying. But not long ago I was as green and healthy as the others,” the tree began d reamily. “I had fruit growing in me. I was content with happiness, dancing to the melodies of wind and rain, bathing in the gold sun. I felt like the center of the world.

“But later I began to feel angry. I was home to the birds; bees consumed my flowers, animals played in me, and passers-by sat down in my shade. But what did I get in return? I began to scare away the birds and the bees. I thought I didn’t need them. I thought I could be beautifully alone.”

Tom listened carefully. “I’m just like him,” he thought.

“Then… animals stopped coming, all of them... I even angered the River Goddess (女神) and She stopped her water from my roots. Now I’m so weak that I’m dying.”

The tree could only whisper now. “So Tom, help me... Every day on your way
