Lesson one

1．college entrance exam 大学入学考试

3. have no chance of doing sth. 没可能做某事

I have no chance of becoming an astronaut.

give …a second chance to do sth．再给某人一次机会做某事

Can you give me a second chance to explain?

4．lay sb. off 解雇，裁员

The company laid us off because it did not do very well.

Jim was laid off because of his laziness.

5 suspect vt. 怀疑

◆搭配：写出下列词组或句子的汉语意思。

(1) suspect one’s words ______________

(2) suspect him to be a liar_____________

(3) suspect him of giving false information ____________________________

(4) I suspected that he was a spy. ______________

★辨析: doubt & suspect (vt. 怀疑)

(1)如果后面接名词、代词或名词性词组时，两者可通用。

◇I doubt/suspect the truth of her statement.我对她那番话的真实性表示怀疑。

(2)如果后面接宾语从句，意思就截然不同。

①suspect 只能后面接that宾语从句。

The doctor suspected that he was ill with flu. 医生怀疑/ 认为他得了流感。

②doubt 用于肯定句中时，多接whether/if 引导的从句，意为“不敢肯定(feel

uncertain about)”(但suspect 不可接这种从句)doubt后接that从句时更多用于否定句或疑问句中。

I I doubt whether/if he'll come. 我不敢肯定他来不来。

I don't doubt that he is right.我确信他是对的。

6．swell with ＋n= be full of =be filled with充满

My eyes swelled with tears. 我的眼睛里含着泪水。

His heart swelled with pride at his achievement. 他有了成绩而沾沾自喜。

7．It is /was (about/high)time (that) sb did sth… 早该是时候做…

It is time that we stopped quarrelling and found out a solution to the problem.

拓展：该是时候…做It is time (for sb) to do sth It is time for sth.

8aside from =apart from

1)除了…外(都) =except for (不包括在内)

I’ve finished aside from the last question.

2) 除了…外(还)，此外，=besides, in addition to (包括在内)

Aside from their house in London, they also have a villa in Spain.

Lesson Two

1. drill n. 操练,练习; 钻头,钻床

vt. 操练,训练;钻vi. 操练,训练;钻孔,钻通

词义辨析

drill，exercise，practice，training，这些名词都有“练习、训练、锻炼”之意。

drill侧重进行有系统的，严格和重复的练习。

exercise主要指为强壮体魄而进行的锻炼，也可指进行练习以保持已经获得的技巧。

practice指把所学的理论或知识用于实践以获得技艺与技巧。

training普通用词，泛指为从事某种职业而进行的身体或智力方面的训练。

2. reputation n. 名誉,声誉,声望,信誉

They have torn her reputation to shreds. 他们把她的声誉全毁了。

She's always had a blameless reputation. 她素有十分好的名声。

She earned a reputation as a hard worker. 勤劳的工作使她享有声誉

Lesson Three

1. a bit＋adj 有点儿，稍微(做状语)

I am a bit tired.

拓展: a bit of +U. 少许，少量的

She gave me a bit of good advice.

拓展: not a bit +adj一点也不,毫不

not a little +adj 非常

2. wish for sth/to do sth Let’s wish for the best.

Wish sb to do I wish to see you soon.

Wish sb sth I wish you to come.

Wish that+从句（虚拟）I wish I were a bird.

3. set off (for+地点) 出发…

set off sth 使(炸弹等)爆炸

They set off for Shanghai.

The boys were setting off fireworks in the street.

拓展: set about doing开始做某事

set up 建立,创立

4.sb lack/lose(失去)/gain (获得)confidence.

lack (v.) sth，缺乏He lacks confidence.

We have dreams but we lack actions.

(n.) lack of sth 缺乏，匮乏

There is (a) lack of … 没有,缺乏… There is a lack of money/food/ skills

be lacking in +n =be short of +n 缺乏She is lacking in confidence.

5.drag vt. 拖，拉

The animals are so tired that they drag their legs.
