3. desire

（1）渴望，欲望

He has a strong desire to go shopping. 他很想去购物。

He has no desire for wealth. 他对财富无欲望。

（2）想要；意欲；希望；要求；请求

He desires that you (should) see him at once. 他请求你立刻去见他。

He desires a college education. 他想接受大学教育。

They desire me to return soon 他们要我快点回来。

【辨析】desire与wish

① desire属正式用语，可代替wish，强调主观愿望的热切性，含有“强烈希望做某事”的意思。

He got the dictionary he desired. 他得到了他渴望得到的那本字典。

② wish语气比desire弱，一般用于指难以实现或不可能实现的愿望。跟从句时，后面多用虚拟语气。

I wish I were a bird. 我希望我是一只鸟。

4. choose 选，选择

Who did you choose as the new member of the construction committee? 你选了谁当建设委员会的新委员？She chose to study chemistry. 她决定学化学。

He chose not to go home. 他决定不回家了。

His uncle chose to settle in the countryside.

他的叔叔决意在乡下定居。

【辨析】choose，select 和pick

choose强调在“选择”某物时的意愿，特别是当供挑选物只有两个时，应当用choose；select指有好几个东西供选择时，因为有较多的被挑选物，所以必须加以鉴别；

pick用作“挑选”讲时，不强调鉴别，也不强调意愿。

He chose not to go abroad until late. 他决定晚些时候出国。

I was selected for the team. 我被选入这个队。

I picked a book to read. 我选了一本书来读。

5. anxiety n.忧虑，担心

We feel great anxiety about Mr Zhang’s sickness.

我们对张先生的病情感到非常担忧。

He was waiting for his son’s return with anxiety. 他焦急地等着儿子归来。

anxious adj.

（1）焦虑的，不安的，担心的

Helen is anxious about travelling on her own.

海伦对自己一个人出门旅行感到担心。

We are all anxious about/over her safety. 我们都为她的安全而担心。

（2）渴望…的，急切希望…的

Peggy is anxious to show that she can cope with extra responsibility.

佩吉急切地表明她能承担额外的职责。

He is anxious to enter for the competition. 他想去报名参加比赛。

6. glance n.

He glanced nervously at his watch. 他紧张不安地看了一下表。
