They had the grace and dignity of an english garden without the formality of a park. Arm- in- arm the two young people wandered along a path leading to it summerhouse and from there across a wide sloping laws. Here stood a willow so ancient and whispering and curtained with leaves that it formed a giant umbrella reaching almost to the ground. Sid and Rene pursed the fronds of the willow and went inside it. The sun shining through the chinks in the leaves made queer patterns on their face. It was quiet and secret inside and Rose would have liked to sit down by the trunk. Sid looked up at the branches forming the domed roof of their hiding place, andsaid all those leaves were bound to be full of insects and the ground looked a bit hard here anyway. Rene gave way, not because she minded about the insects on the hardness of the ground, but because a little band of children suddenly appourced chasing one another in and out of the tree. Kids, she thought, were all right but they got in your way. When you wanted to talk, and, after all, this tree must be an instrument for any kid. “come on”, she said,”let’s explore a bit farther.”They went on surprisingly far in the end of the town, along a path and up a flay hill till they came to it dell shaded by trees where the grass as ie deeper green and velvety to the touch, it was very still here but there was no seat on which to sit down.“it looks nice here.” said Rene ,”might as well give our legs a rest.”Sid hesitated, torn between a desire to sit down nest to Rene and the fear that he would catch a chill in the process.“perhaps we ought to find somewhere where there’s a seat.”he suggested,”i do not suppose the grass is dry yet after Friday’s rain.”Rene sighed. Even this velvet glade could not make Sid forget the perils associated with sitting on damp grass.“you have got your anorak.” she said,”you can sit on that.”“it’s my new time,” Sid began to unzip if rather half-heandly.“a bit of damp won’t hurt it,” retorted Rene, and sat down.21.The willow tree in the lawn is described as “quiet and secret” becauseA it was so difficult to penetrateB of its dome-like shapeC it was used as a shelterD its branches formed a screen22.when Rene suggested sitting under the tree,Sid____?A made objectionsB looked uncomfortableC became imitableD seemed frightened23.what impression does the test give of Rene’s attitude to children? But listening critically to their talk i hear hardly any new words. It is all a matter of using old words in a new way and thenen copying each other, that much as they wish to speak differently from their parents, they want even more to speak like people of their own age. A new usage once took time to spread, but now a pop star can flash it across the world in hours.Of course it is not only the young who like to use the latest in work. While they are describing their idols as smashing, great fab or comic, their parents and the more discriminating of the younger set are also groping for worth of practice. Rats are once apt and fashionable. However, their choice of splendid, brilliant ,fantastic and so on will in turn be slightly dimmed by over-use and need replacement.Magic as is a theme that has regularly supplied words of praise and the choice must betray something in our nature. Charming, entrancing and enchanting are all based on it. So also is marvelous which was been used so much that some of its magic has fade while among teenagers......? Had a great run, another of this group, though you might not think it, is glamorous, which was all the ragein the great day of folly wood. Glamour was a scottish dialect form of “gramture”and”grammanry”,which itself was an old word for enchantment.(grammar means the study of words, and words have always been at the heart of magic). The first “the age of respect”, when it was an honor to have you, the interviewee, on the program, lasted until the middle 50s. The second “the age of ascendancy”, when politicians in particular looked upon the interviews as rivals who make them feel uncomfortable by their knowledge and rigor of questioning, came to an end at the beginning of this decade. Now we are in “the age of evasion”, when most prominent interviewees have acquired the art of seeming to answer a question whilst bypassing its essential thrust. Why should this be? Form the complexity of causes responsible for the present mediocrity of interview form, a few are worth singing out, such as the revolt against rationality and the enthronement of feeling in its place. To the young of the 60s, the painstaking search for understanding of a given political problem may have appeared less, fruitful and satisfying than the unlettered ventilation of emotion which the same problem generated. Sooner or later, broadcasting was bound to reflect this. This bias against understanding has continued. To this we must add the professional causes that have played their part. The convention of the broadcast interview had undergone little change or radical development since its rise in the 50s. When a broadcasting form ceases to develop, its practitioners tend to take it for granted and are likely to say “how”, rather than ask “why”.Furthermore, these partly psychological, partly professional tendencies were greatly accelerated by the huge expansion of news and current affairs output over the last 15 years. When you had many additional hours of current affairs broadcasting interviewing turned out to be a far cheaper convention that straight reporting, which is costly in terms of permanent reporters and time preparation. The temptation to combine an expanded news and current at-lairs service with a relatively small addition financial outlay by making theinterview ubiquitous proved overwhelming. To be fair, there are compensating virtues in interviewing, such as immediacy and authority, yet in all honest i must say that the spread of the interviewing format has led to a corresponding diminution of quality broadcasting.36.According to the author in the past politicians thought that television interviewers____?A knew more about polities than they didB should be honored to meet themC really aspired to be politicians tooD gave them a difficult time in interviews37.in the 60s young people____?A talked about problems instead of solving themB found political problems too difficult to understandC preferred the expression of feeling to logical argumentD were dissatisfied with the standard of interviewing38.From a professional standpoint, one reason for the decline in the interviews is that___?AB interviewing techniques have remained much the sameC people are not so radical as in the 60sD broadcasters consider the interview format out-modepared with other forms of current affairs program, interviews are _____?A shorter and more efficientB more carefully preparedC fairer in their approachD more authentic and direct40.The word”ventilation” in p2 most probably means?A releaseB open discussionC recallingD complaints41。

We’re taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but a lot of us get by just fine on less, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study out of the University of Buffalo last month reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to die of stroke—probably as a result of an underlying disorder that keeps them from snoozing soundly. Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Residents are famously sleep deprived. When I was training to become a neurosurgeon, it was not unusual to work 40 hours in a row without rest. Most of us took it in stride, confident we could still deliver the highest quality of medical care. Maybe we shouldn’t have been so sure of ourselves. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person’s motor person’s motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is legally intoxicated. Curiously, surgeons who believe that operating under the influence is grounds for dismissal often don’t think twice about operating wi thout enough sleep.“I could tell you horror stories,” says Jays Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association, which runs a website where residents can post anonymous anecdotes. Someliterally fell asleep standing up and nearly face planted into the wound.”“Practically every surgical resident I know has fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from work,” writes another. “I know of three who have hit parked cars... Another hit a ‘Jersey barrier’ on the New Jersey Turnpike, going 65 m.p.h.” “Your own patients have become the enemy,” writes a third, because they are “the one thing that stands between you and a few hours of sleep.”Agrawal’s organization is supp orting the Patient and Physician Safety and Protection Act of 2001, introduced last November by Representative John Conyers Jr. of Michigan. Its key provisions, modeled on New York State’s regulations, include an 80-hour workweek and a 24-hour work-shift limit. Most doctors, however, resist such interference. Dr. Charles Binkley, a senior surgery resident at the University of Michigan, agrees that something needs to be done but believes “doctors should be bound by their conscience, not by the government.”The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is a place for doctors, patients are on their own. If you’re worried about the people treating you or a loved one, you should feel free to ask how many hours of sleep they have had and if more-rested staffers are available. Doctors, for their part, have to give up their pose of infallibility and get the rest they need.1.We can learn from the first paragraph that() .2.Speaking of the sleep problems doctors’ face, the author implies that () .3.Paragraphs 3 and 4 are written to () .4.By “doctors should be bound by their conscience, not by the government”(line 6, paragraph5), Dr. Charles Binkley means that() .5.To which of the following is the author likely to agree? A.people who sleep than 8 hours a day are more prone to illnessB.poor sleep quality may be a sign of physical disorderC.stroke is often associated with sleepD.too much sleep can be as harmful as lack of sleep问题2选项B.doctors’ sleep is deprived by residentsC.doctors tend to neglect their own sleep problemsD.sleep-deprived doctors are intoxicated问题3选项A.entertain the audience with some anecdotesB.discuss the cause of docto rs’ sleep problemsC.show the hostility doctors harbor against their patientsD.exemplify the danger doctors face caused by lack of sleep问题4选项A.doctors should not abide by government’s regulationsB.the government is interfering too muchC.the regulations about workweek and work shift are too specificw cannot force a doctor to sleep while his conscience can问题5选项A.Patients should control the hours of their doctors.B.Pilots and truck drivers work in safer environments than that of doct ors’.C.Patients are facing more risks if their doctors are not adequately-rested.D.People concerned have the right to remove their doctors from their positions.

3.单选题Much of the American anxiety about old age is a flight from the reality of death. One of the striking qualities of the American character is the unwillingness to face either the fact or meaning of death, in the more somber tradition of American literature—from Hawthorne and Melville and Poe to Faulknar and Hemingway?—one finds a tragic depth that belies the surface thinness of the ordinary American death attitudes. By an effort of the imagination, the great writers faced problems which the culture in action is reluctant to face the fact of death, its mystery, and its place in the back-and-forth shuttling of the eternal recurrence. The unblinking confrontation of death in Greek times, the elaborate theological patterns woven around it in the Middle Ages, the ritual celebration of it in the rich, peasant cultures of Latin and Slavic Europe and in primitive cultures; these are difficult to find in American life.Whether through fear of the emotional depths, or because of a drying up of the sluices of religious intensity, the American avoids dwelling on death or even coming to terms with it; he finds it morbid and reedits from it, surrounding it with word avoidance ( Americans never die; they "pass away") and various taboos of speech and practice. A "Funeral parlor" is decorated to look like a bank; everything in a funeral ceremony is done in hushed tones, as if it were something furtive, to be concealed from the world; there is so much emphasis on being dignified that the ceremony often loses 'its quality of dignity. In some of the primitive cultures, there is difficulty in understanding the causes of death; it seems puzzling and even unintelligible. Living is a scientific culture. Americans have already enough explanation of how it comes, yet they show little capacity to come to terms with the fact of death itself and with the grief that accompanies it. "We jubilate over birth anda fact of life as is birth." And, one may add, even in its hurry and brevity, the last stage of an American's life —the last occasion of his relation to his society —is as standardized as the rest.1.In the novels of Hawthorne and Melville, one will find() .2.The words "pass away" suggest the () .3.Unlike American society, some primitive cultures () .4.Margaret Mead suggests that () .5.The word "it" in line 2 of paragraph 2 refers to () .6.We can infer from the passage that in some primitive cultures, () .7.From the passage, we team that Americans() . A.ordinary American death attitudesB.a willingness to accept death as a fact of lifeC.a superficial attitude toward deathD.a morbid attitude to the death theme问题2选项A.religious overtones of deathB.indifference with which most Americans regard deathC.American reluctant to face the reality of deathD.average American belief in immortalityA.do not understand the causes of deathB.understand the causes of deathC.are unable to come to terms with deathD.have a morbid attitude toward death问题4选项A.we should sot rejoice at a birthB.we should cry at a birth and rejoice at a funeralC.a wedding should be solemn affairD.we should accept both death mid marriage and birth as a fact of life问题5选项A.fearB.religious integrityC.dwelling on deathD.death问题6选项A.death is accepted happilyB.death has been treated as a mysteryC.death has been bestowed with rich cultural implicationsD.mentioning of death is avoided in American culture问题7选项A.know scientifically how death comes aboutB.treat death as a mysteryC.accept death squarelyD.know more about death than people in other countries【答案】第1题:A第2题:C第3题:A第4题:D第5题:D第6题:B第7题:A【解析】1.根据关键词“Hawthorne and Melville”定位到第一段二三句“from Hawthorne and Melville...— one finds a tragic depth that belies the surface thinness of the ordinary American death attitudes.”

IndiaBThree Boys and a DadBrad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expectinga whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a wa lkin the park,”he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍). Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background. Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex wa s wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible. At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre (日托所).“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. This text is developed .A. by spaceB. by comparisonC. by processD. by timeCEating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problem, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to b e of “moderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure. The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.()48. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (纹身)nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey (传递)certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and noserings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances? so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees (雇员),because those people represent the companies to their customers. As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are. There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidatesimply cause he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.()52. 考博英语阅读理解及答案解析

Passage 1The physical distribution of products has two primary aspects: transportation and storage. Both aspects are highly developed and specialized phases of marketing. The costs of both trans-porting and storing are built into the prices of products. Transportation can be by truck, rail-way, ship, or barge. For some items, such as exotic plants and flowers, or when rapid delivery is essential, air freight may be used.Storage, or warehousing, is a necessary function because production and consumption of goods rarely match: items generally are not sold as quickly as they are made. Inventories build up, both in warehouses and at retail establishments, before the foods are sold. The transporta-tion function is involved in bringing goods to a warehouse and taking them from it to retail stores.Storage performs the service of stabilizing market price. If, for example, no agricultural product could be stored, all food would have to be put on the market immediately. This would, of course, create a glut and lower prices drastically. There would be an immediate benefit to consumers, but in the long run they would suffer. Farmers, because of low prices, would be forced off the land, and the amount of food produced would decrease. This, in turn, would raise consumer prices.Warehouses for storage are of several types. Private warehouses are owned by manufactur-ers. Public warehouses, in spite of their name, are privately owned facilities, but they are in-dependent of manufacturer ownership. General-merchandise warehouses store a great variety of products. Cold-storage warehouses store perishable goods, especially food products. Grain ele-vators are a kind of warehouse used to keep wheat and other grains from spoiling. A bonded warehouse is one that stores foods, frequently imported, on which taxes must be paid before they are sold. Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages are common examples. The distribution center is a more recently developed kind of warehouse. Many large com- panics have several manufacturing plants, sometimes located outside the country. Each plant does not make every company product but specializes in one or more of them. The distribution center allows a manufacturer to bring together all product lines in one place. Its purpose is to minimize storage and to ease the flow of goods from manufacturers to retailers rather than build up extensive inventories. It reduces costs by speeding up product turnover. Very large corporations will have several distribution centers regionally or internationally based1. The main subject of this passage is______.A) transportation and storage B) storage of productsC) distribution center D) two main aspects of product distribution2. Warehousing is important in that _A) inventories build up before the goods are soldB) the prices will go downC) more goods are produced than can be consumedD) the food has to be put on the market immediately3. How many types of warehouses for storage are discussed in the passage?A) 3. B) 4. C) 6. D) 7.4. Where might one find meat and milk?A) Grain elevator. B) Cold-storage warehouse.C) Private warehouse. D) Bonded warehouse.5. What is NOT true of a distribution center?A) It is a relatively new type of warehouse.B) Product is replaced more quickly and costs are down.C) Some distribution centers are not built in the sane country as the factoryD) It builds up extensive inventories to minimize storage.Passage 2How much pain do animals feel? This is a question which has caused endless controversy. Opponents of big game shooting, for example, arouse our pity by describing tile agonies of a badly-wounded beast that has crawled into a comer to die. In countries where the fox, the hare and the deer are hunted, animal-lovers paint harrowing pictures of the pursued animal suffering not only the physical distress of the chase but the mental anguish of anticipated death. The usual answer to these criticisms is that animals do not suffer in the same way, or to the same extent, as we de. Man was created with a delicate nervous system and has never lost his acute sensitiveness to pain; animals, on the other hand, had less sensitive systems to begin with and in the course of millions of years, have developed a capacity of ignoring injuries and disorders which human beings would find intolerable. For example, a dog will continue to play with a ball even after a serious injury to his foot; he may be unable to run without limping, but he will go on trying long after a human child would have had to stop because of the pain. We are told, moreover, that even when animals appear to us to be suffering acutely, this is not so; what seems to us to be agonized contortions caused by pain are in fact no more than muscular contractions over which they have no control. These arguments are unsatisfactory because something about which we know a great deal is being compared with something we can only conjecture. We know what we feel; we have no means of knowing what animals feet. Some creatures with a less delicate nervous system than ours may be incapable of feeling pain to the same extent as we do: that as far as we are entitled to do, the most humane attitude, surely, is to assume that no animals are entirely exempt from physical pain and that we ought, therefore, wherever possible, to avoid causing suffering even to the least of them.6. Animal-lovers assume that animals, being hunted, would suffer from ____.A) a great deal of agony both in body and in spiritB) mental distress once they are woundedC) only body pains without feeling sadD) crawling into the comer to die7. Supporters of game shooting may argue that animals ______.A) cannot control their muscular contractionsB) have developed a capacity of feeling no painC) are not as acutely sensitive as human beings to injuriesD) can endure all kinds of disorders8. The author feels sure that _____.A) animals don't show suffering to usB) dogs are more endurable than human childrenC) we cannot know what animals feelD) comparing animals with human beings is not appropriate9. What is the author's opinion about animal hunting?A) We should feel the same as the hunted animals do.B) We should protect and save all the animals.C) We shouldn't cause suffering to them.D) We should take care of them if we can.10. This passage seems to ____.A) argue for something B) explain somethingC) tell a story D) describe an objectPassage 3In science, a theory is a reasonable explanation of observed events that are related. A the-ory often involves an imaginary model that helps scientists picture the way an observed event could be produced. A good example of this is found in the kinetic molecular theory, in which gases are pictured as being made up of many small particles that are in constant motion.A useful theory, in addition to explaining past observations, helps to predict events that have not as yet been observed. After a theory has been publicized, scientists design experi-merits to test the theory. If observations confirm the scientists' predictions, the theory is sup-ported. If observations do not confirm the predictions, the scientists must search further. There may be a fault in the experiment, or the theory may have to be revised or rejected.Science involves imagination and creative thinking as well as collecting information and performing experiments. Facts by themselves are not science. As the mathematician Jules Henri Poincare said: "Science is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks, but a collection of facts cannot be called science any more than a pile of bricks can be called a house."Most scientists start an investigation by finding out what other scientists have learned about a particular problem. After known facts have been gathered, the scientist comes to the part of the investigation that requires considerable imagination. Possible solutions to the problem areformulated. These possible solutions are called hypotheses. In a way, any hypothesis is a leap into the unknown. It extends the scientist's thinking beyond the known facts. The scientist plans experiments, performs calculations, and makes ob-servations to test hypotheses. For without hypotheses, further investigation lacks purpose and direction. When hypotheses are confirmed, they are incorporated into theories.11. The word "this" in the 3rd sentence in paragraph 1 refers to ______.A) a good example B) an imaginary modelC) the kinetic molecular theory D) an observed event12. Bricks are mentioned in the 3rd paragraph to indicate how ____.A) mathematicians approach scienceB) building a house is like performing experimentsC) science is more than a collection of factsD) scientific experiments have led to improved technology13. In the last paragraph, the author refers to a hypothesis as "a leap into the unknown" in or- der to show that hypotheses ______.A) are sometimes ill-conceived B) can lead to dangerous resultsC) go beyond available facts D) require effort to formulate14. What is a major function of hypotheses as implied in the last paragraph7A) Sifting through known facts.B) Communicating a scientist's thoughts to others.C) Providing direction for scientific research.D) Linking together different theories.15. Which of the following statements is supported by the passage?A) Theories are simply imaginary models of past events.B) It is better to revise a hypothesis than to reject it.C) A scientist's most difficult task is testing hypotheses.D) A good scientist needs to be creative.
