Scientist do not know much about yawns. But they have some ideas. Our bodies get tired. Our minds get tired, too. A tired mind needs air. So we yawn. The quick yawn takes in air. And the air wakes up our mind, but not for long. Watch out! Here comes another yawn.42. Two thievesMike was taken to the police station and put in a room with another thief, an older man. This man looked at Mike and said, "Why have they brought you here?""I stole a small radio one day after my lessons," said Mike. The man laughed rudely at Mike. "You should steal something which is worth a lot if you want to be a thief. You ought to steal something really valuable, which you can be proud of, so that your name is put in the newspaper. Go and steal a lot of money from a bank next time!" Mike thought for a few seconds and then said, "I can't do that.""Why can't you?" said the old thief." Are you afraid?""No," said Mike. "I am not afraid, but the banks all close at three o'clock, and my lessons don't finish till four."43. A Giant KiteDavid always liked kites. When he became eighteen, his father gave him a giant kite. It was so large that he thought it could carry him up into the air.David tied a rope from the kite to a boat. He grabbed onto the kite and told the person in the boat to start pulling. Soon David was gliding through the air.The boat pulled David and his kite for four hours. When the boat stopped, David splashed into the water. He said that it had been a lot of fun.44. Once a yearTom finished school when he was eighteen years old. He wanted to work at a bank in the city. He went to the bank and asked for work there.A man took him into a small room and gave him questions on a piece of paper. Tom wrote the answer on the paper in a hurry. The man looked for a few minutes, and then said, "Was your birthday on the 12th of December, Tom?""Yes, sir." Tom said. "Whatsir. " Tom said.year?" the man asked. “Oh, once a year,45. A new DietAlma and her mother were walking home when a small dog began following them. There was a note tied to the dog's collar. Alma read the note, it said, "My name is Lady. My owner cannot keep me. May I be your pet?"Alma showed the note to her mother. "May I keep the dog?" she asked. The puppy looked like a nice dog. Mother said that they could keep it. Alma and Lady were happy. Almahad a new pet, and Lady had a new home.46. The Frog That Changes colorBirds live in trees. Squirrels live in trees. But do you know that some frogs live in trees, too?The tree frog is hard to find. This frog can change color. On green leaves, it stays green. On a brown branch, it turns brown. Some tree frogs can change from green to gold or blue.Tree frogs have legs and wide feet. They have sticky pads at the ends of their toes. These sticky toe pads keep the tree frogs from falling. Tree frogs have different colors and markings on their skin. Their eyes are different, too. Some green eyes, some gray. Some frogs' eyes are gold, and some are bright red.The sounds they make in spring and summer are different, too. One frog makes a sound like a dog barking. Another frog makes a loud noise like a snore. There is even a frog thatwhistles!47. The City of San FranciscoSan Francisco is a beautiful American city. Benjamin FranklinBenjamin Franklin liked to study and learn about new things. One day he heard a friend say that something black in color absorbs the heat better than something white in color. Franklin wanted to see if this was true. There was snow on the ground at that time. So he put two large pieces of cloth on the snow. One piece of cloth was black in color, while the other was white. Then he waited. The sun began to shine. After several hours, he looked under the pieces of cloth. He saw that the snow under the black cloth melted much faster than the snow under the white cloth.。

1Rat-a-tat. Rat-a-tat. Mike tapped his pencil on his school desk. Rat-a-tat. Rat-a-tat-tat-tat!This did not make his teacher happy.“Mike! Please stop that noise!”said Mr. Patterson. “This is silent reading time, remember?”“Sorry,”said Mike. He put down his pencil. He had been reading. But he could tap and read at the same time__no problem. It was harder for him not to tap.Mike liked to make his own music. He kept two drumsticks in his back-pack. On his way home from school, he took them out. Then he tapped out the beat he heard in his head.He dragged his sticks along fences. He drummed on mailboxes andgarbage cans. Once he even drummed on a car! But then a woman yelled at him, so he never did that again. When Mike got home, he didn’t put his sticks away. There were lots of places in the house where he could make music. The kitchen was the best.First he drummed on the stove. Then he tapped on the kitchen table. Then he banged on some pots and pans. What a great sound they made!Mike’s mom came into the kitchen.“Mike!”she said. “Please stop that noise! The banging is driving me crazy.”Mike didn’t want to drive his mom crazy. He didn’t want to make her mad either. So he put his sticks away. But the beat still went on in his head.He used a spoon to tap it out on his soup bowl at dinner. He used a duster to tap it out on his globe when he was supposed to be cleaning his room. He used his toothbrush to tap it out on the sink at bedtime. With Mike around, nothing was safe. He’d use any surface to make his music.Mike had a friend named Sara. She had a great voice, and she liked to sing__ anywhere, anytime. She sang in the living room when her sister was trying to read. “Stop that noise!”said her sister. She sang in the family room when her brother was trying to watch T.V.“Stop that noise!”said her brother. She sang at the dinner table with her mouth full of mashedpotatoes. This did not make her parents happy.“Sara!”said her mom. “Don’t sing at the table with mashed potatoes in your mouth.”Sara swallowed her potatoes. She opened her mouth to sing. “Sara!”said her dad. “Don’t sing at the table without mashed potatoes in your mouth. In fact, please keep your mouth closed.”After that, Sara kept her mouth closed when she was around other people. But tunes kept playing in her head, so she hummed. She hummed as she chose books at the library. She hummed during soccer practice. She humed while she got her hair cut. She hummed in school.“Sara, are you listening to me?”asked Mr. Patterson. “Are you paying attention?”“Yes,”said Sara.“Then please tell me what I just said,”said Mr. Patterson. “You said, ‘Sara, are you listening to me?Are you paying attention?’”said Sara.Mr. Patterson sighed.Mike and Sara had a friend named Tom. His head was full of music too. But he didn’t drum or hum. He made sounds in other ways.He zipped his jacket up and down. He jingled coins in his pocket. He ran his fingers down the teeth of his comb.Tom knew you could make music with almost anything. You could blow across the top of a bottle to make a low, deep sound. Or you could let air out of a balloon to make a high, squeaky sound. This did not make his family happy.“Hey! Stop that noise!”yelled his big sister. “I’m trying to talk on the phone.”Tom didn’t have a flute or a horn or any other real instrument. So he made his own music makers. He made one by putting dried beans in an empty salt box and shaking it. He made another by folding waxed paper over a comb and blowing on it. And he made another by filling glasses with water and tapping them with a spoon.Sometimes Tom made music at school. One day, during silent reading, he took out a rubber band. He stretched it between his thumb and little finger on one hand. Then he strummed it with his other hand. Twang, twang, twang. From across the room came a rat-a-tat-tat as Mike tapped his pencil to the beat. Then Sara joined in, humming softly.“I just can’t believe it,”thought Mr. Patterson. “A drummer, a hummer, and a strummer__all in my class. How did I get so lucky?”He was about to tell the three kids to stop the noise. But then he stopped to listen__really listen. What he heard wasn’t noise. It was …music! That gave him an idea.“Mike, Tom, Sara,”Mr. Patterson called. “Please step into the hall with me a moment.”“Uh-oh,”said Mike.“We’re in trouble,”said Tom.“Big trouble,”said Sara.Slowly, they followed Mr. Patterson from the room. “Listen,”said Mr. Patterson. “I can tell that music is important to you. But I can’t let you disturb the other kids. So here’s the deal.If you promise to keep quiet during class, I’ll help you to form a band. If it’s okay with your parents, you can practice here after school. And if you stick with it, you can play at the school open house.”He smiled at the kids. “So how about it? Do we have a deal?”“Yes!”said Sara.“It’s a deal,”said Mike.“It’s a good deal,”said Tom.The open house was only two weeks away. Mike, Sara, and Tom practiced every day after school to get ready. They tried new ways to make music. They made new instruments. They listened to one another and worked hard together. They even came up with a name for the band. They also helped one another keep their promise. If Mike forgot and started tapping his pencil, Tom hit him with a rubber band.If Tom forgot and started strumming, Sara cleared her throat loudly. And if Sara forgot and started humming, Mike tapped her with his pencil. Finally it was the night of the open house. Parents sat at their kids’desks. They looked at their kids’schoolwork. They asked lots of questions.Afterward Mr. Patterson said, “I have a special treat. Our own class band will perform for you tonight. Please welcome__Good Deal!”Mike, Tom, and Sara marched into the room. They were nervous, but they were proud too. They began to play. First Mike set the beat with his drum. Then Sara began to sing, keeping time with a pair of shakers. Then Tom joined in with his music makers.Tom’s parents smiled. Sara’s parents hummed along with the music. Mike’s parents tapped their feet. All of the grown-ups were amazed. The band was really good! The kids looked at one another and grinned. They were doing what they liked to do best__making music. And no one was saying “Stop that noise”now!Luke and Max were drawing with chalk on the sidewalk in Pocket Park. The park was small, with houses on the sides. But it was just the right size for the boys and their friends.Luke was making a dragon. He used the last bit of red chalk to draw fire coming from the dragon’s mouth.“Awesome dragon,”said Max.“Thanks,”said Luke. “Your picture is good too.Only I’m not sure what it is.”Max laughed. “It’s a castle,”he said.“But it looks more like a stack of boxes. I guess I’m better atbuilding things than I am at drawing them.”Just then Beth and Lisa came by.“Hi,”said Lisa. “Can we draw too?”“Sure,”said Max. “But we’ve used up most of the chalk.”He held up a small piece to show her.“We can buy more,”said Beth. “Look what I found under my pillow this morning.”Beth opened her hand. She had four shiny quarters. “I lost my fifth tooth, so I got money from the tooth fairy.”“You’ve lost five teeth?”said Luke. “No fair. I haven’t even lost one!”“Really?”said Lisa. “I’ve lost two.”“I’ve lost six, and another one is loose,”said Max.All of a sudden, Luke felt weird. He was the only one who still had all his baby teeth.“Maybe one of your teeth is loose,”Lisa said kindly. “Why don’t you check and see?”“Okay,”said Luke. He pushed his tongue against his top teeth. They didn’t move. He pushed his tongue against his bottom teeth. One of them moved!“My tooth is loose! My tooth is loose!”Luke yelled. He opened his mouth and wiggled his bottom fronttooth.“Cool!”said his friends.Luke grinned. Finally he had a loose tooth! But then he started to worry. When would his tooth come out? Would it hang around in his mouth for years and years?Luke’s smile turned into a frown.“Now what’s wrong?”asked Beth.Luke shrugged. “Well, I’m happy my tooth is loose. But now I wonder how I’m going to get it out.”“Don’t worry. I know what to do,”said Max.“We’ll make a big machine. It will grab your loose tooth. It will wiggle it and wiggle it. Then it will yank it out like this.”He pretended to pull Luke’s tooth.Luke’s eyes got very big. “I don’t know, Max,”he said. “It sounds kind of- um -hard to make.”“Trust me. It will be easy,”said Max.“We’ll call it The World’s Fastest Tooth-Pulling Machine. Every kid around Pocket Park will want to use it.”He picked up a little piece of chalk and started to draw the machine. “We’ll need gears and wires and nuts and bolts. And we’ll need a big, strong pincher thing to grab the tooth.”Luke looked at Max’s drawing. The Tooth-Pulling Machine didnot look like fun. In fact, it looked creepy. But maybe it would work.Luke really wanted to lose a tooth.“Okay,”he said. “Let’s give it a try.”“Great,”said Max. “Come on, you guys. We’ll build it at Luke’s house.”“No, thanks,”said Beth. “I’m going to gobuy more chalk.”“I’ll go with you,”said Lisa. “Good luckwith the machine, you two. We’ll meet youback here later.”The girls left the park.“This machine will be so cool,”Max said.“We’ll put the motor on it. Then, vroom! It will pull out your tooth like that.”He snapped his fingers. Luke’s tummy did a flip-flop. This machine was sounding worse and worse!“A m-m-m-motor?”he said. “I don’t think we have one.”“Rats!”said Max. “The machine won’t work without a motor.”“Oh,”said Luke. “That’s too bad.”But inside he felt much better. The boys went to Luke’s house.“I’ve got an idea!”said Max. “Do you have any string?”“Sure,”said Luke. “What for?”“You’ll see,”said Max.The boys went on a string hunt. They found fat string and thin string, scratchy string and smooth string. They made kind of a mess. But Max finally found what he was looking for.“This is just right thinbut strong,”he said.Max led the way to Luke’s room. He cut along piece of string. Then he tied one end tothe doorknob.“You sit on the chair,”he said to Luke.“I’ll tie the other end of the string around your tooth. Then I’ll slam the door. Bang! The string will go tight, and your tooth will pop right out. Okay?”“I guess,”Luke said. But he didn’t like this plan much better than the first one.Max tied the string to Luke’s tooth. “Are you ready?”he asked. Luke gulped. “Ready,”he said.“Then here we go,”said Max. He slammed the door. Bang! Luke jumped as the string flew from his mouth. But his tooth stayed in place.“Rats!”said Max. “Your tooth is very slippery.Do you want to try again?”“That’s okay,”Luke said quickly. “I’m sure my tooth is too slippery.Besides, Mom hates it when I slam the door.”“Okay. I’ve got one more idea,”said Max.“And this one won’t even hurt. All you have to do is brush your teeth. That’show I lost my third tooth. I brushed it hard, and it fell right out.”The boys went to the bathroom. Luke put toothpaste on his toothbrush. He brushed and brushed. He spit into the sink. Then he brushed some more. The tooth did not fall out.“Try brushing harder,”said Max.Luke brushed harder. But it didn’t do any good. “Now I have the cleanest teeth in town,”he said. “But they are all still in my mouth.”“Too bad,”said Max. “What do you want to do now?”“Let’s go back to the park,”said Luke.“Beth and Lisa should be there by now.Maybe they will know what to do.”Sure enough, the two girls were back. They were drawing on the sidewalk withthe new chalk.“Hi,”said Lisa. “Did the machine work?Did your tooth come out?”“We didn’t build it, and my tooth didn’t come out,”said Luke. He picked up a piece of white chalk. He added tiny baby teeth to his dragon’s mouth. Now the dragon didn’t look awesome anymore. It looked silly just the way he felt.“I know something that will make your tooth come out,”said Beth. “It’s calledCrunchy Lunchy!”Luke liked the sound of this plan. “All right,”he said. “I’ll try it.”Beth took everyone to her house. She set the kitchen table. Then she put out all kinds of crunchy, chewy foods.“This is how I lost my first tooth,”she said. “I was eating this same lunch. I bit down hard, and my tooth came out. Ever since then, we’ve called this meal Crunchy“Lunchy.”The four friends sat down at the table. They ate apples. They ate carrots. They atebagels.Luke made sure to bite down hard. Hewiggled his tooth after every bite.“How does your tooth feel now?”Beth asked.Luke wiggled his tooth one last time. “Itfeels the same,”he said sadly.Just then Max gave a shout. “Hey! One of my teeth fell out.”He held up a little white tooth.Luke groaned. “Now you’ve lost seven, and I still haven’t lost even one!”The kids went back to the park.“There must be some way to get your tooth to come out,”Max said. “But I don’t have another plan.”“Me either,”said Beth.“I know what you should do,”said Lisa.“What?”said Luke. “Tell me, please!”“Forget about that tooth,”said Lisa.“That tooth has a plan of its own. It will fall out when it’s ready.”And that’s just what happened!3Kate shook her piggy bank hard. One last dime fell out. “How much does that make?”she asked her friend Lisa. “Nine dollars in all,”said Lisa.“That’s not enough,”said Kate.Kate’s little brother, Sam, came into the room. “What’s not enough?”he asked. He hopped onto the bed and started bouncing.“Wow! Look at all the money. What are you going to do with it?”“I was going to buy Dad a toolbox for his birthday,”said Kate. “But the one I want costs twenty dollars. I only have nine.”Sam stopped bouncing. He picked up a dime and handed itto Kate. “You could buy Dad two gum balls,”he said. “The big ones only cost five cents each.”“Very funny,”she said. “Go play in your own room, Sam.”She gently pushed him out the door. Then she and Lisa put the coins back in the bank.“Dad’s birthday is only four days away,”said Kate. “How am I going to get the rest of the money by then?”“You’ll think of a way,”said Lisa. “In the meantime, let’s go to the park. Nick and Max will be there by now.”The girls grabbed their baseball mitts. They walked through Kate’s backyard gate into Pocket Park. The park had houses on the sides and a gate at each end. It was small. But it was just the right size for Kate and her friends.Max and Nick were playing catch.“Hi, you guys,”called Max. “Are you ready to play?”He threw the ball to Kate, but she missed the easy catch. Then, when she tossed the ball back, her throw went wild.Max had to run after it.The same thing happened the next time Kate threw the ball. “Sorry, Max,”she called as he ran after it.“I’ve got something on my mind.”“Like what?”Nick asked.“Like how to get eleven dollars in three days,”Kate said. “I need the money for my dad’s birthday present.”Max came running back. He plopped onto a park bench. “Man, playing catch with you is hot work!”he said.“I wish I had a cold drink right now. I’d pour it downmy throat like this. Glug, glug, glug!”The other kids cracked up.Then Kate thought of something. “That’sit!”she yelled. “I know how to get the money. I’ll sell lemonade, right here in Pocket Park.”“Good idea!”said Lisa. “Let’s see. You’ll need lemonade mix and cups and a stand.”“I’ll get a table for the stand,”said Max.“I’ll make some signs,”said Nick.“We’ll all help!”said Lisa.“Thanks, you guys,”said Kate.“I bet I’ll make lots of money.”“Enough to buy your dad two presents,”said Nick.He gave Kate a high five.Kate got the nine dollars from her bank. She went to the store with her mom. They bought lemonade mix and cups, and Kate still had money left over. When she got home, Kate made two big jugs of lemonade. Lisa helped. Sam tasted.“Just right,”said Sam.Nick and Max painted big signs. Some of them were a little messy, but Kate didn’t mind.Max got a folding table. He put it by one of the gates into Pocket Park. Lisa covered the table with a white cloth. Nick put up the signs. Kate put out the lemonade and cups. Then they all sat down to wait their first sale. They didn’t have to wait long. A little girl came over from the swings.“Oooh, lemonade! That looks good,”she said.“I’ll take a cup.”Kate poured the lemonade. “That will be fifty cents, please,”she said with a grin. The girl gave Kate the money. She sipped her lemonade. “Mmm. Yummy!”she said.“Best lemonade in the park,”said Nick.“Best lemonade in the world!”said Max.More people bought cups of lemonade. By the end of the day, Kate and her friends had made seven dollars.Kate checked the jugs. “This is great,”she said. “There’s lots of lemonade left. And I still have two days to make the rest of the money.”“I’m sure you can do it,”said Lisa.Just then Sam rode into the park. “Hi,Kate!”he called. “Have you sold any lemonade yet?”Kate grinned. “A whole bunch,”she said.Sam rode around the lemonade stand.“Watch this, you guys. No hands,”he said.He let go of the handlebars.“Look out!”Nick yelled.“Stop, Sam!”Kate cried. It was too late. Sam hit the table. Crash! The jugs fell over. Splash! The lemonade spilled all over the white cloth and onto the ground.“Sam!”Kate yelled. “Look what you did!”“Not a smart move, Sammy,”said Max.Sam looked as if he were about to cry.“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do it,”he said.Kate rolled her eyes. “It’s okay, Sam. I can buy more lemonade mix. I just hope I can still make my twenty dollars.”“I have an idea,”said Nick. “Why don’t you sell cookies too? Then you’ll make more money.”“Good thinking,”said Kate. “There’s only one problem.I’d have to spend more money to buy stuff to make the cookies.”Kate told her mom what had happened.“I’ll make cookies for you,”said her mom.She took Kate to the store to get more lemonade mix. Then she made a big batch of sugar cookies. This time Sam helped and Kate tasted.“Just right,”said Kate. The next day, Kate and her friends made three dollars selling lemonade. They made two dollars selling sugar cookies.“I’ve got more than half the money,”said Kate.“I know I’ll make the rest.”Kate set up her stand early the next day.Lisa came to help. “I bet you sell lots of lemonade today,”she said. “The air feels so hot and sticky.”Kate looked at the sky. It had been blue when she’d first set up. Now there were dark clouds covering the sun.“I sure hope it doesn’t rain,”she said.Just then a big, fat raindrop hit Kate’s head. Then another and another.“Quick!”she cried. “Grab the cookies and the lemonadebefore they get wet.”But now the rain was pouring down. The cookies got mushy. The lemonade got watery. The paper cups and the sign got soggy. And the girls got soaked.Kate’s lemonade stand was a big mess!Kate tried not to cry. “Tomorrow is Dad’s birthday,”she said. “There’s no way I’ll have the money for his present.”“Don’t give up yet,”said Lisa. “You can still sell stuff in the morning.”Kate sighed. “I don’t know,”she said.“Come on,”said Lisa. “Give it a try.”“Okay,”said Kate. “I’ll try one more time.”Kate bought more lemonade mix and cups. She made more lemonade, and her mom made more cookies.Max and Nick made a new sign. The next morning, Kate and her friends went back to Pocket Park. But the street was all blocked off and the gates were closed. A sign hung on the fence.Nick read it out loud. “Park closed today. Tree trimming.”“No selling lemonade today,”Kate said sadly.“Hi, there,”called a man in a yellow hard hat.“What are you kids doing?”“We were going to sell lemonade in the park,”said Kate. “But it’s closed.”“That’s right,”said the man. “My crew is trimming the trees today.”“I bet that’s hard work,”said Lisa.“I bet it’s hot work,”Kate added quickly.“Would you like to buy some lemonade?”The man grinned. “Cold lemonade would taste good,”he said. “I’ll buy both jugs for my crew and the cookies too.”Kate and her friends cheered. She bought the red toolbox for her dad. Then she bought a box of ice-cream bars to share with her friends.“Thanks, you guys. I couldn’t have done it without you,”Kate said.“You’re pretty good at selling stuff, Kate,”said Max. “What are you going to sell next?”“Guess,”she said.“Ice-cream!”the kids yelled.Everyone wanted to help.4My name is Molly Muller. That’s me in the middle, the one who’s not smiling. The girl on the left is my sister Tina.Tina is the oldest. The girl on the right is my other sister, Lucy. Lucy is the youngest. So here’s my question. If Tina is the oldest and Lucy is the youngest, what does that make me__the middle-est?I can’t be the middle-est. I looked it up, and there’s no such word! Now do you see my problem?I’m not the oldest, and I’m not the youngest. I’m just Molly in the middle. There’s nothing special about me at all. Some new people moved in next door. When they came over to meet us, Dad said, “This is Tina. She’s our oldest.”Tina said hello and shook hands with them. Nobody had to poke her in the ribs to remind her.The new people said, “My! She’s sooooo grown-up!”Then Dad said, “This is Lucy. She’s our youngest.”Lucy did her little baby act. She stuck her thumb in hermouth and made goo-goo eyes.I thought it was sickening, but thenew people said, “Awwwww! Isn’t she cute?”Then Dad said, “This is Molly. She’s in the middle.”As I said, there’s nothing special about being in the middle. So I thought, “If I can’t be the oldest and I can’t be the youngest__maybe I can be the cutest.”I stuck both my thumbs in my mouth. But nobody said, “Awwwww!”Dad just gave me a dirty look and said, “Stop that,Molly. Your hands are full of germs.”(I guess baby thumbs don’t have germs.)When the new neighbors left, I wished I could leave too. Being stuck in the middle STINKS!I’d rather be stuck on a leaky raft in shark-filled waters than stuck in the middle. I’d rather be stuck in a deep hole full of big snakes than stuck in the middle.I’d rather be stuck on top of the Empire State Building in a snowstorm with nothing to eat but lima beans than stuck in the middle. If I were stuck on a raft, or in a hole, or on top of the Empire State Building, someone might pay attention. But when you’re stuck in the middle of a family, no one really sees you.“Okay,”I thought. “If I can’t be the oldest, and I can’t be the youngest, and Ican’t be the cutest__I’ll be the loudest. Then people will have to pay attention.”During dinner I yelled, “PASS THE ROLLS, PLEASE!”Mom was so surprised, she dropped the whole basket on the floor. Then the phone rang, and I picked it up and yelled, “HELLO! THIS IS MOLLY MULLER SPEAKING! CAN YOU HEAR ME?”The caller had the wrong number. But now at least one person in the world knows that Molly Muller is a really loud kid. When I went to bed that night. I yelled, “GOOD NIGHT, LUCY!”Too bad Lucy was already asleep. She woke up, and Mom and Dad got mad and told me to stop yelling. So then I thought, “If I can’t be the oldest, and I can’t bethe youngest, and I can’t be the cutest, and I can’t be the loudest__maybe I can be the funniest.”The next morning, I dressed up like a clown and went downstairs to breakfast.Lucy and Tina laughed really hard when they saw me. “Knock! Knock!”I said.“Who’s there?”Tina asked.“Molly,”I said.“Molly who?”Lucy asked. Before I could answer, Dad told me to take off his good shoes. Mom told me to wash my face and stay out of her makeup. “Wait,”said Tina. “You didn’t finish the joke. Molly who?”“That’s what I’m trying to find out,”I said. Then I stomped out of the kitchen. Now I was mad. And when I get mad, I get mean. So I thought, “That’s it! If I can’t be the oldest, and I can’t be the youngest, and I can’t be the cutest, and I can’t be the loudest, and I can’t be the funniest__I’ll just have to be the meanest.”I got all the dirty, smelly socks out of the hamper. Then I let Lucy and Tina have it.“HERE COMES MOLLY, THEMEANEST MULLER OF THEM ALL!”I yelled.Tina tried to run away, but I got her__right in the face. “Gross!”she screamed.Lucy sat down on the floor and startedto cry. (She’s such a baby!)It was wild, let me tell you, and it sure got Mom and Dad to see me. But what they saw was that I needed a time-out. Oops! While I was in time-out, all I could think about was how Tina and Lucy get the best deal in this familly.Did I mention that Tina gets her own room because she’s the oldest?Sure, she lets me come in and play with her stuff. But it’s still her room.I have to share a room with Lucy. When you’re the youngest, you don’t get your own room. You just get your way all the time__every single minute of every single day.If I play Lucy, I have to play the game she likes. That’s because it’s the only game she knows how to play! And if I argue or make a fuss, Mom tells me not to act like a baby. When I thought about how unfair it all was, I wanted to stamp my feet. So I did. BAM! BAM! BAM! I stamped so hard, the floor shook. That’s when Dad came into the room and asked me what was wrong.“What’s wrong is that I’m stuck in the middle,”I told him. “I’m too young to have my own room. But I’m too old to act like a baby. I can’t yell. Nobody thinks I’m funny. I’m not allowed to be mean. And on top of everything else, MY THUMBS ARE FULL OF COOTIES!”“I see your problem,”Dad said. “So just for today, you can be the youngest or the oldest. Which would you like to be?”“I want to be the oldest__so I can have my own room,”I said.“You won’t mind sleeping by yourself?”Dad asked. He had a point. I would mind sleeping in a room by myself. In fact, I’d be scared.“I changed my mind,”I said. “I’ll be the youngest.”“Then your bedtime will be an hour earlier,”Dad told me. “Oh, and don’t forget. You’re not allowed in Tina’s room, and you can’t play with her things anymore.”“Why not?”I said.“Because you’re too young,”Dad said. “You leave sticky fingerprints on books. You lose puzzle pieces.”“I changed my mind again,”I said. “I want to be the oldest.”Dad smiled. “Then I want you to play with Lucy for an hour. Mom and I are going to work in the yard. We need you to watch her.”“How can I play with Lucy for a whole hour?”I said . “She only knows one stupid baby game.”Dad whispered in my ear so Lucy couldn’t hear him. “Pretend you like it__and let her win. You’re the oldest, remember. You’re much too grown-up to beat a baby at baby game.”“Let me think it over,”I said.Dad left and I thought some more.Maybe being in the middle wasn’t so bad after all. Maybe I was the one who had the best deal.I made a list of the good things about being in the middle. Here’s what I wrote. After I read over my list, I felt better. Then I thought, “Maybe sometime, if I’m feeling grown-up, I’ll let Lucy win. Or I’ll help her do one of Tina’s puzzles and make sureshe doesn’t lose the pieces. But only if I want to. I don’t have to. Mom and Dad don’t expect me to.”A little while later, Dad came back.“Well?”he said. “What did you decide?”“I’m staying in the middle,”I said. Then I jumped up and got my jacket.“Where are you going?”Dad asked.“I’m going next door,”I said.“I want to tell the new people that I’m not the oldest, and I’m not the youngest, and I’m not the cutest, and I’m not the loudest, and I’m not the funniest, and I’m not the meanest. I’m Molly in the middle.“And that make me the luckiest!”5Don’t get me wrong. I love my grandma. But I have to say she doesn’t act like other grandmas at all!Other grandmas wear dresses. My grandma wears jeans. Other grandmas like to play cards. My grandma likes to play baseball and soccer and touch football. Other grandmas bake pies and cookies. My grandma makes salads with bean sprouts.。
