The boss of a big company needed to call one of his employees about an urgent problem with one of the main computers. He dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper, “Hello?”

Feeling it was inconvenient to talk to a youngster, the boss asked, “Is your daddy home?”

“Yes,” whispered the small voice.

1

To the surprise of the boss, the small voice whispered, “No.”

Wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, “Is your mommy there?”

“Yes,” came the answer.

“May I talk with her?”

2

Knowing that it was not likely that a young child would be left home alone, the boss decided he would just leave a message with the person who should be there watching over the child.

“Is there any one there besides you?” the boss asked the child.

3

Wondering what a policeman would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, “May I speak with the policeman?”

“No, he is busy,” whispered the child.

4

“Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the fireman,” came the whispered answer.

Growing concerned and even worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the earpiece on the phone the boss asked, “What is that noise?”

“A hello-copper,” answered the whispering voice.

5

In a low whispering voice the child answered, “The search team just landed the hello-copper!”

Alarmed, concerned and more than just a little frustrated the boss asked, “The search team?! Why are they there?”

Still whispering, the young voice replied, “They are looking for me!”

A. “Busy doing what?” asked the boss.

B. “May I talk with him?” the man asked.

C. Again the small voice whispered, “No.”

D. “Yes,” whispered the child, “a policeman.”

E. “What is going on there?” asked the boss, now alarmed.

F. “What is the fireman doing at your home?” the boss asked.

G. “The hello-copper is so cool,” whispered the child with excitement.

Most people who travel to another country to work or study for a significant period of time go through an adjustment period to the new culture. The amount of disorientation (迷惘) one feels in the new situation depends on one's own background and experiences.

Culture shock is the sudden loss of the familiar, which leads to a sense of isolation (孤单) and less self-importance. 1 Later, you may feel that the differences between your home country and those countries you are visiting are huge and frustrating.

The effects of culture shock range from mild uneasiness to acute unhappiness. To reduce such effects, you may follow these tips.

·Be prepared. Be aware that it exists and that it will probably affect you in one way or another.

·Know yourself. 2 Your responses to situations and people in the new culture will make more sense if you have a clear idea of what is important to you personally.
