Notes: 1. The requirements for “traditional” category 5 of TIA/EIA-568A are as represented in TSB-95. 2. The requirements for enhanced category 5 of TIA/EIA-568A are represented in Addendum #5 to TIA/EIA-568A. 3. The new TIA/EIA-568B standard is to replace the TIA/EIA-568 standard, plus all the addenda (up to 5), TSB-67, TSB-72 and TSB-75 and TSB-95. It will include the requirements up to category 5e cabling, but not category 6. 4. Category 6 cabling requirements will be defined in Addendum #1 to TIA/EIA-568B. A substantial amount of development is needed to finalize requirements. One should expect changes from the current draft. Note that the category 6 permanent link requirements do not yet match those for ISO/IEC 11801-2000+ Class E permanent link. This will be discussed further in the TIA TR42 committee. 5. Starting with the TIA/EIA-568B standard, the permanent link will replace the basic link as a test configuration. This overview contains for category 5e and 6 the requirements for the permanent link instead of the basic link. 6. DC resistance requirements are being added in category 6. 7. LCL and LCTL requirements for cat 6 are to be determined (per draft 6). 8. The insertion loss requirements for category 6 now include an allowance for insertion loss deviation (ILD).
Comments:
This document reflects the outcome of the May 2000, TIA TR42 interim meeting in Tyson’s Corner, VA, which addressed requirements for category 6 cabling and current ballots of TIA/EIA568B.1 and TIA/EIA-568B.2. The minor change is that the floor for the return loss of category 5e and cat 6 connecting hardware has a measurement floor of 30 dB, rather than 35 dB. Other requirements were not changed. To be best of the author’s ability, this document matches the contents of the reference documents. However, no guarantee is made that the contents of this document accurately reflect the reference documents. Comments on this document and possible corrections are highly appreciated: e-mail: koeman@tc.fluke.com. Values in square brackets are reflect no formal verification requirements. However, assumptions as stated are made to compute channel, basic link and permanent link pass/fail limits. Sources of information: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
