Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province, is located in the southwest of China, on the eastern side of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. It is a transfer point between most China cities, and the various ethnic minorities’ villages in the province. It is said that in ancient times, the city was surrounded by dense bamboo groves, and was famous for producing a musical instrument known as Zhu. Hence the city is also called Zhu for short.

Surrounded by mountains and forests, the city has pretty well environment. As in other Spring Cities; like Kunming, Guiyang is a popular summer resort city in China. The climate is often mild and moist, neither extremely hot nor cold. Spring, summer, and autumn are all wonderful seasons for sightseeing.

The city is renowned for its colorful culture, represented by various ethnic groups and its special landform - Karst. Guiyang is home to more than 30 minority ethnic groups including, Miao, Buyi, Dong and Hui. Consequently, it abounds with unique folk culture and traditions that give rise to colorful ethnic minority activities. With many Karst caves, the city is even regarded as an ecological model on Karst Landform.

Introduction to Guiyang Climate

Guiyang nestles in the southwest of China, on the eastern side of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. It has a pleasant moist subtropical climate with plenty of sunlight and ample rainfall. It does not have intense heat in summer or severe cold in winter. Guiyang weather is fresh and humid without any sandstorm. The agreeable climate makes it a cozy city for living.

A yearly average temperature of Guiyang is about 15C (59F). July is the hottest month of the year with an average of 24C (75F) while January is the coldest one, averaging a temperature of 4.6C (40F). This place features four distinctive seasons, with winter to be the longest one.

Its genial year-around weather contributes a lot to its popularity among travelers. However, due to the changeful weather on the Yunnan-Guizhou

Plateau, it is recommended to take rain wear along with you whenever you go out. A folding umbrella is indispensable! Due to its topography, the things for anti-solar radiation should be fully prepared. Mornings and evenings can often be rather cool so a windproof coat is necessary.

If you are lucky enough to visit in March or April, you can experience a lot of traditional Miao festivals. From April 30 to May 7 there is the Baiyun National Kites Festival and from June to August is the Hongfeng Lake Tourism Festival, lasting nearly two months. The best seasons for visiting the Huangguoshu Waterfall near Guiyang are summer and autumn when the scenery is the most splendid. The good weather means that travelers can visit at any time of the year. However, the best weather there is in late August.

Guiyang Dining

It is said that Guiyang people working outside Guiyang would be sure to lick their lips when they think of the food of their hometown. This reflects their love of food and the culture. Food there mainly includes Qian cuisine and local snacks.

Qian (Guizhou) Cuisine tastes numb and spicy, which are two indispensable elements in Guiyang food. Numb refers to the condiment made from several spices and the spicy is mainly refined from the red pepper.

Another typical local dish, Suan Tang Yu (Sour Soup Fish) is most delicious. Originating not in Guiyang, but in the Miao region, this dish has become a typical dish in this city. You can have the dish at Kaili Sour Sour Fish Restaurant, No. 55, Shengfu Lu.

Snacks

Si Wa Wa (Sliced Vegetable Baby) could well be the cheapest local snack. It literarily means the Baby because it takes the shape of a baby in swaddling clothes. Actually it is a thin cake made of flour and stuffed with various sliced cooked vegetables such as the carrot, radish, celerie and other vegetables. Sour and spicy juices are necessities when tasting the Si Wa Wa.

Chang Wang Mian (Chang Wang Noodle) could be the most popular snack in the city. The name of Chang Wang implies auspiciousness. With a long history of more than 100 years, Chang Wang Noodle has been highly-praised by the local people.
