• How much is three plus four?
3+4=7
plus (prep.) add (v.) • Three plus four is seven. • Three and four makes seven.
• equal v./adj.
• • • • Three and four is equal to seven. Three added to four equals seven. If you add 4 to 3，you get 7. What’s three plus four? It’s seven.
multiplication 乘 • Times (prep.) or multiply（v.）
• 3×4＝? • How much is three times four?
3×4＝12
• Three times four is twelve. • Multiply three by four, we get twelve. • Three multiplied by four makes twelve.
power 乘方
• • • • • 乘方、幂 power 二次方，平方 square 三次方，立方 cube 四次方 the power of four, the fourth power n次方 the power of n, the nth power
Example: • Three to the 8th power（The 8th power of 3） • 3的8次方 • 4 to the power of 3 is 4³ . • 4 的 3 次方是 4³ 。

subtraction 减
• 10－6＝?
• How much is ten minus six?
10－6＝4
minus (prep), subtract (v.) • Ten minus six is four.
• We also can use “take…from…”:
• Take (subtract) six from ten,and the remainder is four. • (remainder n. 余下的部分) • Six taken (subtracted) from ten is four.
