直到现在，人们还称斯坦福为“农场”。

The history
Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane stanford, as a memorial to their only son, Leland Stanford, who died of typhoid in Europe a few weeks before his 16th birthday. The Stanford used their farm lands to create the university, and hoped to establish a major research university in the West.
The history
The university's founding Grant of Endowment from the Stanford came in November 1885. After six years of planning and building, the university officially opened on October 1, 1891, which recruited 559 students and 15 faculty members. The university's first president was David Starr Jordan.
