Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people's health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. 4.According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG?A.Laughter is good for healthB.Laughter can make you become old quicklyC.Laughter helps to reduce pain.D.Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.5.The underlined word "diminishes" in the third paragraph means "____".A.delays B.prevents C.increases D.reduces6.Why do some doctors hold laughter clinics?A.Because they want to earn more money.B.Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.C.Because they want to improve their patients' condition.D.Because they want their patients to practice how to laugh7.What would be the best title for this passage?A.Both laughter and physical exercise are good for healthB.Laughter clinics help patients improve their conditionC.Laughter can reduce the effects of painD.Laughter is the best medicine.阅读理解Popcorn Park Zoo is not like most zoos. It is a very special place. This unusual place was not originally a zoo. At first it was called the Forked River Animal Care Center. The workers there looked after lost or unwanted cats and dogs. Today the center is part of the zoo, but now many other kinds of animals are helped there, too.The changes to the center began in 1977 when a raccoon(浣熊) needed help. Now you will be spending your break working, (22) ______(trap) in a meeting room with several of your colleagues. Even more annoyingly, your manager has announced that sandwiches will be provided (23) ______ you shouldbe grateful for the kindness and consideration. The actual food choices are not yours. Instead, they appear(24) ______ make) by a six-year- old. The centre piece is a piatter of sandwiches cut into triangles. There are paper plates. You can’t help (25) ______( look) around for party hats and balloons. Not that you actually eat much. People politely wait their turn and then restrict themselves (27) ______a few items. Your own paper plate is fairly typical: two triangles of bread, four salt-and-vinegar crisps (薯片),a limp salad leaf and one plum tomato. It’s about as appetizing as a cup of sand. Note that there is one word more than you need.A. easeB. fittingC. forceD. modestE. preciselyF. primarilyG. robbedH. awesomeI. encounterJ. starvingK. warnedThe Problem of Totally Epic Language InflationStan Carey recently wrote a short blog about language inflation, which ultimately creates devaluation in meaning Today, popular expressions like epic and brilliant are used to express a more 31 meaning than their traditional uses. Brilliant actually means clever, and epic actually means surprising. Such is our desire to elevate words with power and importance, that we use hyperbole(夸张)to draw attention. The same tendency can be seen in numbers as well. Once giving 110% became cliché, people started insisting that they give 210%,310%, and on and on. To create even more 32 behind the phrase, people will also throw in a literally. I literally gave 210%.This is no new trend. My generation destroyed words like awesome and totally. My parents and grandparents 33 of meaning words like incredible, wonderful, and fantastic.Irish novelist C. S. Lewis expressed concern over language inflation: “Don’t say infinitely when you mean very; otherwise, you’ll have noword left when you want to talk about something really infinite.”And this is 34 where we find ourselves right now. We have no words 35 when we want to say that something truly is awe-inspiring.This can also make it all the more difficult for modern readers to connect with older books. Particularly, it can cheapen our understanding of the Scriptures(圣经). As a child of the 80s, I was never at 36 calling God awesome, because as far as I knew, it meant something much less great. If my sunglasses are totally awesome, I need some other word for God! Our souls are 37 in the current culture. We neglect the spiritual aspects of our own existence more and more. It makes sense that the language would reflect that as well. Caring 38 for our physical needs, we run across fewer moments that inspire us with true awe. Those emotions would require a(n) 39 with the significant and the time to contemplate (沉思)it.But who’s got the time or the desire for that We’ll settle for(将就)pretty good experiences and call them totally 40III. Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.Dare to FollowAlmost everyone aspires to lead. If there is one thing anyone with a job and a pulse needs to learn, it is how to 41 . That, at least, is the message from the tsunami of books, courses, videos and podcasts on the topic. Business schools offer all kinds of leadership training. You are told how to lead without actually being a leader.42 in all this is an inconvenient fact. Most people in the workforce are not leaders and pretty much everyone 43 someone else. The most useful skill to have in your current job may well be how to be a good follower. That leaders depend on followers might seem blindingly obvious, but the way that people lower down the ladder interact with those above them gets much less attention than the 44 . A corner of the management literature is 45 to “followership”, but it remains small, for several reasons. The first is that you don’t need any advice to achieve the positi on of 46 ; you will never be more of one than on the very first day of your very first job.The second reason is that, although some people have little desire to be in a position of authority, very few aspire to follow. The word itself is associated with 47 , weakness and complaints. In an experiment conducted by Colette Hoption of Seattle University and her co-authors, people who were randomly assigned to the role of followers felt unhappier and were less willing to do work at the weekends and early inthe morning than those given the 48 of leaders. The third reason why the art of following gets little attention is that most subordinates(下属)have much less agency than the people 49 them. There is often no choice in whom you report to. Leaders, not followers, set the tone: 50 bosses are not old-school command-and- control types, they shape how everyone beneath them behaves.·If such things explain why leadership is 51 , the behaviour of followers is still crucial. Hierarchies(等级制度)can be more fluid(流动的)than they sometimes look: as teams form and dissolve, you may be leading a project one month and 52 the next. Things generally go better when people at every level are engaged in their work and prepared to take on responsibility.Proactivity is a big part of being an effective follower. One of the fathers of the field, Robert Kelley, has usefully 53 five styles of followership: sheep, yes-people, unfriendly followers, pragmatists, and stars. Which 54 of follower people fall into will undoubtedly depend on their boss. But it will also depend on them: on whether they ingratiate(讨好)themselves with their managers or 55 them; on whether they see their boss as someone to support or complain about. As the British Army puts it, “To follow effectively… is a choice.”41. A. start B. lead C. acquire D. convey42. A. Special B. Abundant C. Missing D. Competent43. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A)A biography of Bill Gates: Dollar Bill“Americans appear to be growing increasingly uneasy about billionaires,”observes Anupreeta Das, a journalist at the New York Times. With his long career and its many ups and downs, Mr. Gates is “the perfect prism (棱镜)through which to project tricky moral questions” in pursuit of a “collective rethink” about American values. In the biography, Ms. Das goes from the founding of Microsoft in 1975 to its stock market flotation(上市)11 years later. By 1995 Mr. Gates was the youngest billionaire and the richest person in America but was facing a new problem: his company was so dominant that it attracted the attention of antitrust regulators. The heroic nerd had come to be seen as a villain(反派).So, Mr. Gates reinvented himself as a philanthropist(慈善家), establishing the world’s largest charitable foundation with his then wife Melinda and promoting among other billionaires the Giving Pledge (a promise to donate most of one’s wealth to charitable causes). So successful was this reinvention that Mr. Gates was the most admired man in the world from 2014 to 2019, according toYouGov polls. But then his scandals (丑闻)led to the collapse of his marriage. At the same time, the power of his foundation began to come under increasing inspection. The foundation pours billions into public-health initiatives, outspending many governments, and thus shapes health policy in many countries - yet it is accountable to nobody but the Gateses. During the covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Gates was also the subject of conspiracytheories(阴谋论)suggesting that he was profiting from vaccines and even injecting tiny microchips into people. The hero had once again become a villain. But Ms. Das’s book is most interesting when it shows how Mr. Gates has influenced other billionaires, such as Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos, - how they have followed his example, and how they have not.The book shows Mr. Gates from many angles but provides few insights of him as a person. There is a Gates-shaped hole at the centre of the narrative; Ms. Das was not allowed to interview Mr. Gates. So what does she conclude about billionaires They are, she suggests, lightning rods.(避雷针)for deeper concerns about inequality and privilege. But she holds back from making a strong argument about Mr. Gates. A book that promises to tackle billionaires’ place in society asks many questions, but also asks readers to make up their own minds.56. What is the main pur pose of Anupreeta Das’s biography of Bill GatesA. To document the personal life and career success of Bill Gates.B To celebrate Bill Gates’s achievements in the technology industry.C. To provide a detailed account of the history of Microsoft.D. To explore the moral implications of America values.57. Why was Bill Gates regarded a villain①Microsoft was so dominant as to attract the attention of antitrust regulators.②He established the world’s largest charitable foundation and reinvented himself as a philanthropist.③His investment in public-health initiatives exceeded many governments, thus shaping health policy accountable to only the Gateses.④He was accused of profiting from vaccines and even injecting tiny microchips into people during the covid-19 pandemic.A. ①②④B.①③④C. ②③④D. ①②③④58. Which of the following is most likely to be included in this bookA. A specific description of Ms. Das’ interview with Bill Gates and the transcript of it.B. Bill Gates’ personality, hobbies, and personal anecdote s in his early life at Microsoft.C. The story that Mr. Zuckerberg faced his own crisis, and turned to Mr. Gates for advice.D. Ms. Das’ strong argument about Mr. Gates, such as concerns about inequality and privilege.59. What is the overall tone of the author towards Bill Gates and other tech billionaires in this bookA. Neutral and informative.B. Admiring and supportive.C. Critical and disapproving.D. Sympathetic and understanding.(B)Hiking Three Great WalksTHE LARAPINTA TRAILDifficulty: ModerateThe Larapinta Trail is a 142-mile bushwalk across the Northern Territory’s sunbaked West MacDonnell Ranges, traversing arid outcrops before descending to swimming holes. National Geographic Traveller(C)Increasingly, AI-generated outputs drift across our feeds and searches. Far beyond our screens, the entire culture is becoming affected.A recent study examining scientists’ peer reviews revealed that the word “meticulous(严谨的)” was used 34 times more often than in t he previous year. The phrasing, one of the favorite buzzwords of modern large language models like ChatGPT, indicates that many researchers are handing their work over to AI.This reflects a much bigger problem. Any viral post on social media now almost certainly includes AI-generated replies, all to attract follows. Then there is the growing use of AI to scale the creation of cheap synthetic videos for children on YouTube. The narratives make no sense, and characters appear and disappear randomly. As a neuroscientist, this worries me. Isn’t it possible that human culture contains within it cognitive nutrients— things like cohesive narrations and character continuity— that developing brains need But what happens when atoddler is consuming mostly AI-generated contentIt’s worth looking to a historical analogy(类比)for our current situation: the environmental movement. For just as companies and individuals were driven to pollute by economic incentives, so, too, is AI’s cultural pollution driven by a rational de cision to fill the internet’s appetite for content as cheaply as possible. However, there has been undeniable progress keeping our cities mostly free of smog. HowGarrett Hardin, a biologist and ecologist, emphasized in 1968 that pollution was an over exploitation of shared resources driven by people acting in their own interest, and that “we are locked into a system of‘fouling(污染)our own nest,’ so long as we behave only as independent, rational, free enterprisers.” He summed up the problem as a “tragedy of the commons(公共用地).” This acknowledgement was crucial to the environmental movement, which relied on government regulation to do what companies alone could or would not do.Once again, we find ourselves enacting a tragedy of the commons:short-term economic self- interest encourages using cheap AI content to maximize clicks and views, which in turn pollutes our culture. And so far, major AI companies are refusing to help identify AI’s creation- which they could do by adding statistical patterns hidden in word use or in the pixels of images. To deal with this corporate refusal to act we need the equivalent of aClean Air Act: a Clean Internet Act. A simple solution would be to legislatively force advanced watermarking in AI- generated outputs. Just as the 20th century required extensive interventions to protect the shared environment, the 21st century must protect a different, but equally critical, common resource: our shared human culture.63. Why does the author express concernA. AI-generated content is difficult to detect.B. Young children are overly exposed to online content.C. Our culture is affected by low-quality AI-generated content.D. Technological issues, similar to environmental problems, are serious.64. Which of the following examples best il lustrates a “tragedy of the commons”?A. Fishermen overfishing to earn as much as possible.B. Netizens uploading an excessive number of videos online.C. Students using AI to generate answers for exam questions.D. Governments failing to establish partnership with companies.65. According to the author, the issue discussed can be resolved by______ .A. controlling the volume of AI-generated contentB. regulating AI outputs to make them more identifiableC. urging tech companies to improve the quality of AI generationD. encouraging people to treat culture as seriously as they treatenvironmental issues66. Which of the following serves as the most suitable title for the passageA. A tragedy of the commons: the importance of regulationB. AI outputs are overwhelming: potential risks of AI technologyC. Navigating the digital age: why AI should be used with cautionD. Addressing AI-generated garbage: endangered culture needs legislationSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.A. But that is complicated by another of the researchers’ findings.B. They are predatory birds that will gladly seize unattended eggs.C. Now a paper by Libourel and Lee reports another clever adaptation.D. The birds may readily steal nesting materials from unguarded neighbours, for instance.E. But the fact that the birds are able to incubate eggs under such conditions proves the naps useful.F. Like ducks, chinstrap penguins can sleep with either their whole brain or with just one hemisphere at a time. The biology of sleep: Forty thousand naps near the seaSleep is a bit of an evolutionary mystery. A sleeping animal cannot lookfor food, defend its territory or flee from danger. The fact that sleep is nonetheless common among animals suggests its restorative powers are essential. So does the fact that, if laboratory animals are deprived of it for long enough, they die. Some animals, though, have developed unique ways to balance the need for sleep and the need for staying alert. Dolphins and ducks can sleep with only half their brains at a time, leaving the other half alert. 67 Chinstrap penguins(帽带企鹅), it seems, take their sleep in the form of thousands of tiny micro-naps.The researchers captured 14 penguins on King George Island, and their brain activity was tracked remotely through electrodes. While ducks sleep in long stretches, the researchers discovered that the penguins were napping for just a few seconds at a time, hundreds of times an hour. They offer two explanations for the penguins’ sleep patterns. The first is to do with external threats. Penguins often incubate(孵化)their eggs alone while their partners are away foraging for food. Colonies are threatened by brown skuas(棕贼鸥). 68 Broken sleep may be an evolutionarily smart way of getting some shut-eye during longegg-guarding watches while still remaining able to react to danger.69 Birds with nests near the edge of the colony ought to be at greater risk than those in the centre. But birds on the edges of the colonyseemed to enjoy longer and deeper naps than those near the middle. That leads to the second suggestion, which is to do with the penguins themselves. Penguin colonies are noisy, crowded places, and threats may come from within as well as without. 70 Birds in the bustling, crime-ridden centre of the colony may simply find it harder to get any shut-eye than those living in the safer, quieter suburbs.Choosing between those theories will require more research. Both, of course, could prove to be true.IV. Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.71. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the website and register (注册) the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, "The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both."Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the "real" and not the virtual. No-one can deny the power of the Internet. Some believe it makes language weaker, but some see a brighter side, believing it makes online communication easier between strangers. An elementary school teacher in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, says that the evolution of Internet slang is not all fun and carefree. From his daily observations, he believes the "geographic boundary" between Internet slang and formal language is disappearing. On many occasions, the compositions he has received from pupils have been flooded with abbreviated slangs (网络梗).During last year's Two Sessions, several representatives put forward proposals such as "regulating online language" and "banning vulgar (粗俗) words", specifically to address this issue, expressing the need to reduce online language misuse and strengthen the protection of Chinese. However, many experts and scholars of linguistics and communication including Feng Zhiwei, disagree. Feng, believes that Internet language is a natural product of the dynamic development of language, and it is not necessary to ban it.8.What made the meme "Shuan Q" become popular?A.The power of internet B.The protection of ChineseC.Geographic boundary D.Strangers's communication9.What can we learn about internet slangs from paragraph 2 and 3?A.They are formal.B.They are funny and carefree.C.They are flooded among pupils.D.They were supported by all people.10.What is Feng Zhiwei's opinion about internet slangs?A.They are natural.B.They are misused.C.They should be banned.D.They are disappearing.11.Which word best describe the author's attitude to internet slangs?A.Doubtful B.Objective C.Indifferent D.Favorable阅读理解My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. "Grandma drives faster than you!" my younger son likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.A gym near my house was offering free two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo (摔跤和柔道). I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands, After the instructor showed various escape techniques, I wondered what I was doing there. Seconds later, I reminded myself that I was on a search to push my boundaries (极限). By the time class ended, I was full of energy. Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a punch that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym), I'm proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself is not about strength; it's about strategy. At the same time, I'm calmer and less anxious—a benefit my family enjoys. As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn't want to be late for her tennis match.12.What kind of person the author was in her family's heart according to paragraph 1?A.She was unreliable.B.She liked taking risks.C.She would drive fast.D.She used to enjoy her comfortable zone13.Which of the following best describes the author?A.Humorous and brave B.Confident and caring.C.Generous and careless.D.Determined and careful.14.What can we learn about the author according to the passage?A.She becomes a better self.B.She often feels upset and lonely.C.She regrets taking the self-defense classes.D.She has ever been attacked outside of the gym.15.What does the passage imply?A.One is never too old to learn.B.Failure is the mother of success.C.Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.D.A woman owes her success to her family support.二、第一部分阅读理解,第二节任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

About a year later, the 13-year-old boy got much better news: His transplant was successful, and he could join Make-A-Wish, an organization that helps fulfill (完成) wishes of children with serious illnesses. That was when Abraham shared an idea with his mom. “I remember when we were coming home after seeing his doctor, he said, ‘Mom, I thought about it, and I really want to feed the homeless,’ ” said Abraham’s mom, Miriam Olagbegi. “I said, ‘Are you sure, Abraham? You could do a lot... You’re sure you don’t want to play video games?’ ”However, Abraham was uninterested in the PlayStation. Instead, in September, Make-A-Wish helped Abraham organize a day to hand out free food in Jackson, Mississippi — the food and supplies were donated by local businesses. They were able to feed around 80 people that day.“When the homeless people get the plate, some of them would come back and sing to us and thank us,” he said. “And it just really feels good. It warms our hearts. But later, I was astonished when I got to experience it firsthand.Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a peer (同龄人) review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I preferred to work independently. But when I got involved, I found in the experience, I had done something that I thought was nearly impossible — it made my poetry better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more detail. One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning, I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The peer activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive and hard-working culture that allows us to push our boundaries and keep going. It creates a sense of community since we are all working towards a similar goal.As an active boy, I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom, there are restrictions on what I can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and pursue my goals.Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself going back to a normal classroom.8、What was the author’s initial response to Summit Learning?A. He was unwilling to attend it.B. He was excited to take part in it.C. He was astonished to hear about it.D. He was unhappy to withdraw from it.9、How did the poetry project benefit the author?A. It boosted his confidence.B. It developed his sense of humor.C. It reminded him to be independent.D. It taught him how to organize activities.10、What can be inferred about Summit Learning?A. It proves the limits of one’s abilities.B. It teaches poetry in a normal classroom.C. It transforms the traditional way of learning.D. It promotes diversity of classroom objectives.11、How does the author find Summit Learning now?A. Demanding.B. Admirable.C. Upsetting.D. Conventional.Mouse embryos (胚胎) have been cultured (培养) on the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant step in understanding reproduction in space. Led by Teruhiko Wakayama from the University of Yamanashi in Japan, this experiment studied the possible safety of human pregnancy (怀孕) during long space journeys, such as a trip to Mars that lasts more than six months. Wakayama emphasized the importance of this research, saying, “We are conducting research to ensure we will be able to safely have children if that time comes.”The experiment began on Earth, where early two-cell stage embryos from pregnant mice were taken out, frozen, and sent to the ISS on a SpaceX rocket. Astronauts on the ISS then warmed up and cultured the embryos for four days using devices specially designed for this task. Afterward, the embryos were kept and returned to Earth. The four-day growth period was chosen as embryos can only survive for this length outside a uterus, according to Wakayama.Upon their return, the embryos were examined to check the impact of space’s unique conditions, such as higher radiation (辐射) levels and microgravity (微重力). The results were promising; the embryos showed no DNA damage from radiation and showed normal structural development, including the crucial change into two cell groups necessary for forming the fetus and placenta. Wakayama found these results significant, as it was previously believed that microgravity might prevent the embryo’s ability to separate intothese separate cell types. While these findings are promising, further research is needed to fully understand space reproduction. Wakayama referred to a previous study involving pregnant rats in space, which resulted in the birth of typical-weight rats, suggesting normal development. The team now aims to further study the health of embryos exposed to space conditions and plans to test whether mouse embryos sent to the ISS can develop into healthy young after returning to Earth.12、What was the main purpose of sending mouse embryos to the ISS?A. To test the possibility of embryos in space.B. To study the effects of radiation on DNA.C. To culture embryos using specific devices.D. To observe the growth of pregnant mice.13、The mouse embryos showed after being cultured on the ISS.A. DNA damage from radiationB. failed separation into cell groupsC. adjustment to microgravityD. normal growth14、Why does the passage mention a previous rat study in paragraph 4?A. To provide supporting evidence for the resultsB. To describe the conditions for raising ratsC. To recommend a new research methodD. To introduce an unsuccessful experiment15、What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Space Mice: A Genetic RevolutionB. Pregnancy in Space: A Mouse Embryo StudyC. Mars Trip: Embryo ChallengesD. She was the first to show me the rules of what Evelyn Waugh called our “rich and delicate language.” She was a no-nonsense instructor. Unlike common teachers, she diagramed (用图表展示) sentences so we could know the grammar rules. She never seemed to be tired of the simple pleasures of sharing her learning.Under her influence, I had the strong belief that language needs to be well-spoken and properly written. Yet over the years I never made the effort to find her and to express my thankfulness for what she did for me. Two years after being in her class, I began the study of Latin and French, and the foundation (基础) she provided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never looked back.In high school I took advanced French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finestteacher I have ever experienced at any level. Mr. Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis (分析). Reading “Phèdre”, Racine’s classic play, he asked us to note there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pointed out the care Racine devoted to structure. Years later I made the same point — giving Mr. Miller credit — in a college French class, and my professor was surprised by my understanding of the play. Mr. Miller taught us to enjoy literature with particular points of view. Yet I never made the effort in later years to tell him what he meant to me.Mr. Miller is certainly long dead. If she is alive, Miss Hammerman would likely be in her 90s. In preparing this article, I tried to find her but was unsuccessful.their teachers. To share memories of the two teachers. It will come as no comfort to a child shivering (打哆嗦) on a playing field on a cold winter’s day. But regular organized school sport helps ch ildren in their academic studies in years to come. The researchers said other “structured” activities such as music or religiousactivities were not as beneficial for attention as taking part in a games lesson. The difference in academic ability was noticeable even at age ten, with those who had taken in sports since the start of junior school performing better than those who hadn’t.The Canadian study looked at children aged six and then ten. Professor Linda Pagani said:“We worked with information provide d by parents and teachers to compare kindergarteners’ activities with their classroom activities as they grew up. By the time they reached the fourth grade, kids who played structured sports were clearly better at following instructions and remaining focused in the classroom. There is something special to the sporting environment — perhaps the sense of belonging to a team to a special group with a common goal — that appears to help kids understand the importance of respecting the rules and honoring responsi bilities.”Researchers began studying 2,694 Canadian children around the age of six, with teachers filled in questionnaires about their behavior in school. Meanwhile, the children’s parents were interviewed by phone or in person about their home life. The exercise was the repeated four years later to test what effect the behavior had.Professor Pagani said: “We found children who had better behavior in the kindergarten class were more likely to be involved in sport by age ten. Nevertheless, we found those children who were specifically involved in team sports at kindergarten scored higher by the time they reached the fourth grade.” The researchers believe sporting activities and attention skills go hand in hand. Professor Pagani added: “The results should b e encouraging for schools looking to cut childhood obesity rates and low attainment in schools.”11、What kinds of children may do better in their academic study according to paragraph one?A. Those who join in structured activities.B. Those who don’t shiver on a cold winter’s day.C. Those who don’t like school sports.D. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett-“Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory. However, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”. We find ways to devalue the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.Sjastad explains that “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism. “Most of us picture ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript. “We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect may lead usmight learn and improve.Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.16、Why does the author mention the speech of inspirational speakers in paragraph 1?A. To offer an example to handle failure.B. To describe a shallow understanding of failure.C. To introduce a common attitude towards failure.D. To emphasize the importance of experiencing failure.17、What can we learn from the paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect”?A. It protects us from false feedback.B. It pictures us as competitive people.C. It poses a severe threat to self-image.D. It denies negative feedback to ourselves.18、What is the author’s attitude towards failure?A. Short-sighted.B. Never hesitate to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.D. Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.My family had moved into a new house with big back yard. For some time, my older brother and I had been expecting a family pet. Finally, we managed to persuade our parents that the time had come for keeping one.Though my brother and I were of like minds about the goal of having a family member, what exactly it meant to each of us was entirely different. I was excited and happy when my parents brought home the dog, Snoopy. Despite the fun of playing with him,I knew it was really more my brother’s pet than mine. I really, really wanted a cat! I tried to show my joy for getting a pet while trying to hide my disappointment that he wasn’t a cat. They want to bring water to the deserts so that people can live and grow food there. They are learning a lot about the deserts, but more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time.Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time. Why is more and more land becoming desert?Scientists think that people make deserts.People are doing bad things to the earth. For example, scientists tell the people how important plants are for stopping land becoming desert, but people don't pay enough attention to the green plants. Some places on the earth don't get much rain. But they still don't become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there.Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places.Plants don't let the sun make the earth even drier.Plants don't let the wind blow the soil away. When a bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water.Without plants, the land can become desert more easily. The present fact is that green plants on the earth are fewer and fewer. If there were no green plants on the earth, the whole earth would become desert.21.Small green plants are very important to dry places because ________.A.they don't let the sun make the earth into good landB.they don't let the wind blow soil awayC.they are green D.they have leaves22.Land is becoming desert little by little because ______.A.few plants grow there B.there is not enough rainC.people haven't done what scientists want them to doD.scientists know little about the deserts23.From the second paragraph,we know that ________.A.scientists know how to change desert into good landB.to stop the earth becoming desert, people should do good things to the earth as scientists say C.if scientists can bring water to desert, people can live and grow food thereD.more and more places are becoming deserts all the time24.After reading this,we learn that ________.A.plants can keep dry land from becoming desertB.it is good to get rid of the grass in the desertsC.all places without much rain will become desertsD.it is better for the dry land to grow grass than to grow treesBNo one can believe that the over 6 300-kilometer long Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2 000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, in Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC~206 BC),and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behin d human. The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corral(畜栏) and pigsties(猪圈).Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrance. Rubbish is spread over the battlements(城垛).The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but dug out the entire base.It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization (文明)and learn to love it.25.The main reason for which the Great Wall can be called “great” is__________.A. it was made by brickB. it was very wideC. it was very longD. it had a long history26.Why does the author say the Great Wall might disappear?A.It is useless from now on.B.It will be replaced by a new one.C.Some parts of it are being destroyed.D.It’s too old to be used again.27.The underlined part “those sections far away from the public eyes” refers to the parts of the Great Wall__________.A.that are too difficult to understandB.nobody can watchC.that are too far to been seenD.that are not well known to the public28.What’s the main reason of the Great Wall’s being destroyed?A.The local people are short of culture knowledge.B.The local people need bricks and stones to build houses.C.The local people think that the Great Wall is not important.D.The local people are against the government.B“You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat-catching.You will shame yourself and all your family,”Darwin's father once said to him. Most people know that Charles Darwin was the father of evolutionarybiology. However, what is not widely known is what sort of person he was.In his autobiography(自传),Darwin described himself as a rather “naughty” child. He stole fruit from the trees on the side of his parents' house, made up wild stories, and tried to be the center of attention in the family.Even worse,it seemed that Charles Darwin was a lazy young man and a slow learner at grammar school. He was a rather shy student but he did take great pleasure in showing off his athletic skills to the other schoolboys. It is not known how well Darwin did at school, but we could say that he was likely to be an unremarkable student. When Darwin was nine years old,his father sent him to a boy's boarding school. At this school,Darwin learned classics, ancient history, and Greek, all of which he foundboring. He was not inspired much by his schooling. He found his only pleasure there was reading Shakespeare's historical plays, the poems of Byron,Scott, and Thomson. His increased interest in natural science was encouraged by events outside his formal education. As Darwin grew older, collecting became his major hobby. It became very clear that Darwin was not taking his studies seriously.29.What is this passage mainly about?A.What kind of character Darwin had.B.Why Darwin cared for nothing but animals.C.What Darwin's childhood and school years were like.D.What made Darwin the father of evolutionary biology.30.We can infer from Paragraph 1 that when Darwin was a child, his father thought ________.A.he was not a common child B.he would become a great manC.he didn't care about his family D.he wouldn't achieve anything31.By mentioning that Darwin made up wild stories, the writer probably wants to show that Darwin________.A.had a gift for language B.liked to be the center of attentionC.was “naughty” when he was a child D.was a very good storyteller32. The underlined word “unremarkable” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.A.able B.honest C.ordinary D.uglyDWelcome to your future life! You get up in the morning and look into the mirror.Your face is firm and young-looking.In 2035,medical technology is better than ever. Many people your age could live to be 150,so at 40,you're not old at all.And your parents just had an antiaging(抗衰老的)treatment. Now,all three of you look the same age!You say to your shirt,“Turn red.”It changes from blue to red.In 2035,“smart clothes”contain particles(粒子)much smaller than the cells in your body. The particles can be programmed to change your clothes' color or pattern. You walk into the kitchen. You pick up the milk, but a voice says,“You shouldn't drink that!”Your fridge has read the chip(芯片)that contains information about the milk, and it knows the milk is old.In 2035,every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip. It's time to go to work.In 2035,cars drive themselves.Just tell your“smart car”where to go.On the way,you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve.Such“smart technology”is all around you.So will all these things come true?“For new technology to succeed,”says scientist Andrew Zolli,“it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.”The Internet is one example—what will be the next?33.We can learn from the text that in the future ________.A.people will never get old B.everyone will look the sameC.red will be the most popular color D.clothes will be able to change their pattern 34.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A.Milk will be harmful to health.
