大学英语课程是一门基础课程,内容包括听、说、读、写、译五个部分。
本课程是以外语教学理论为指导,以英语语言知识与应用技能、跨文化交际和学习策略为主要内容,并集多种教学模式和教学手段为一体的教学体系。
大学英语的教学目标是培养学生的英语综合应用能力,特别是听说能力,使他们在今后学习、工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行交际,同时增强其自主学习能力,提高综合文化素养,以适应我国社会发展和国际交流的需要。
大学阶段的具体英语教学要求分为三个层次,即一般要求、较高要求和更高要求。
一般要求是我校非英语专业本科毕业生应达到的基本要求。
较高要求或更高要求是为快班和实验班学生根据自己的能力、自己所在院系的类型和人才培养目标所选择的标准而推荐的。
大学英语课程分为综合课和视听说两种课型。
综合课使用大学英语综合教程,听说课使用新视野大学英语视听说课本。
每周两节综合课,两节视听说课程。
在两年的学习中,普通班学生应完成四级的学习并通过大学英语四级考试;快班和实验班学生应完成大学英语六级内容并通过大学英语六级考试。
COLLEGE ENGLISH is divided into INTEGRATED COURSE and VIEWING, LISTENING & SPEAKING, with four periods of class each week. It includes listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Within two years of college English study, students should be able to pass CET 4 and students in Advanced Class should pass CET 6.

<English Listening I> is a course which focuses on listening and speaking. Through various forms of listening practice, students are required to grasp some basic listening skills. With these skills, students can figure out the main idea of the listening material,and get the detailed facts and main evidence. Furthermore, they are expected to be able to give analysis on the listening material so that they can get the tone and attitude of the speakers. In addition, students are required to have a good habit of taking notes in simple English. As for oral English, they are expected to express themselves quite clearly with the words they have learnt. And they are required to grasp the skill of inquiring, suggesting, and advising the functional English. This course is mainly based on the book Listen to This which is published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. In order to arouse students interest in listening, they are also given some other interesting listening material including short films, VOA , CNN, etc.

The art of translation is a combination of literary skills, acquired and perfected through long, persistent practice, and the knowledge of grammatical rules and linguistic principles, whose application makes for correctness and exactitude. Translation is the process of good understanding of the original language and proper conversion from the original into another language. It is usually composed of the two stages: comprehension and representation. Comprehension of the original through the context clue is crucial. It is necessary for us to make a careful analysis of the grammatical relation and the logical layout of the context. In order to achieve faithfulness of the original, we must pay attention to two points: Firstly, a correct understanding of the exact meaning of the difficult words. The meaning of a word is not gained simply from the dictionary or textbook. The context and collocation have great influence upon the meaning of words. Secondly, we must make a careful analysis of the grammatical structure and the logical layout of the sentence, as well as its relation with other parts of the paragraph. Having settled the problem of understanding of the original, we must try to express it in the target language and have a faithful translation as well as a smooth version. Owing to the fact that English and Chinese are two entirely different languages, “faithfulness” does not mean the complete conformation of the superficial phenomena of the parts of speech and word order. As a rule, we could not add or cross out at random the meaning of the original. But with a view to the characteristic of the two languages of English and Chinese, we could, if necessary, make some supplement and omission in translation.

Translation means rendering from one language into another of something writing or spoken. Translation is a science, because it has its own laws and methods. Chinese and English have their respective characteristics. They have similarities, the word order of the subject and its predicate, of the transitive verb and its object and the preposition and the object it governs; and they have remarkable differences. Translation is also an art, or skill. We all agree that theory is the guide to action. Being native speakers of the Chinese language, we have exposed to a wide variety of linguistic experiences. We have acquired a good degree of competence in expressing ourselves in idiomatic Chinese. But when we do some literary pieces of translation, we often find our Chinese competence is far from being enough. Many a time we fall short a suitable word or expression to convey the meaning of the English original. Being students of English major, we have a constant need to get adequate competence to express ourselves in English. Translation, too, means honest and solid knowledge, allowing not an iota of falsehood. Genuine knowledge comes from practice. We should follow consciously the instruction to strengthen our basic training in the three essential aspects: the enhancement of our bilingual consciousness, the betterment of our command of the relevant languages, and the broadening of the range and scope of our general knowledge.。
