• Zeus felt sorry for Io still he didn’t dare to change her back into her natural form while Argus was watching her. But remembering how Hermes, when he was less than a day old had stolen away the cattle of Apollo, so he set him to steal Io away from Argus. Hermes laid aside his winged cap and his winged shoes, and dressed like the shepherds in that country. Argus found his watch is very dull. He was very glad when he saw Hermes coming with the goats, and he inveted him to play on his pipe and tell stories.
Pan
• Pan had a strong desire for women. At one time he loved a charming maiden, Syrinx, but to his disappointment his love was not returned. One day Syrinx left Pan with a fearful step, which lighted Pan’s love all the more. He ran after her and was almost overtaking her when she was turned, at her own request, into a clump of reeds by Mother Earth. Pan wept bitterly at the change. Sadly he picked some pieces of the reeds and fashioned a pipe.
Hermes create Iyre
• On the threshold of the cave he met a tortoise, waddling along on the grass. At once the ingenious boy saw what use he could make of it. • He scooped out the flesh of tortoise , bored holes through its shell, covered it with ox— hide, put on it two horns, and stretched across it seven strings. Touching the strings he sang gaily to the accompaniment of the newlyinvented lyre.
• He was a cold, hairy country monster, with the upper part of a and legs of a goat. • Pan was admired as the god of woods and pastures, with prophetic powers. He represented nature and country life. In old time he was kindhearted integrity and holy.
• Hermes sat down on a stone by the side of Argus and began to play very softly. Firstly, two of Argus’s eyes soon closed . Then, with the soft notes Argus’ other eyes began to close, stilly only two remained open. Hermes began to tell stories, and at last the two eyes closed, like the others. Argus with his hundred eyes closed, was fast fell asleep, and then he led Io away successfully.

• Hermes is the great messenger of the gods in Greek mythology and a guide to the Underworld. • He is the god of herding thieves and commerce. • He is the cleverest and fastest of the Olympian gods.

• He was the son of Zeus by Maia who gave birth in a cave in Arcadla . In the morning he was born,and midday he stealthily left his cradle and set forth to seek adventure.

• Hermes is best known as herald of the gods. At Zeus’ s bidding he bins on his winged sandals, takes his herald’ s staff in hand, and flies swiftly to earth to carry to men the commands of the father. It is he who conducts to Hades the soul when it leaves the body, and gives it into the charge of the gods of the lower world.

Appearance and Emblems
• Hermes is represemed as a young man with close- cropped curly hair, vivacious look, and agile, vigorous flame. He wears his winged sandals, often a traveler’ s hat or a winged cap; otherwise he is usually nude. In his hand he carries his caduceus, or herald’ s staff, winged at the top, with two serpems twined about it.
• Apollo is very indignant, and he quarreled with Hermes, but Hermes was denied.Therefor they had to go to Olympus and put their dispute before their father Zeus. • Finally Hermes was to be keeper of the cattle and give to Apollo the Iyre, which was ever afterwards his favorite instruments.
Hermes protect Io
• Hera, the wife of Zeus, was very jealous of a beautiful river nymph, called Io. Zeus in order to save Io from the jealous anger of Hera, changed her into a white heifer. Hera, suspecting that the white heifer was really Io, set Argus with his hundred eyes to watch her.
• But Apollo, when morning rose from the stream of Ocean, he found that his cattle was lost. By asking the man who was digging in a vineyard on the hillside. According to the old man’s description he realized that the one who stole his cattle was his younger brother– Hermes.

• When the chariot of Apollo had sunk into the waves of Ocean, this nimble infant left his cave and lyre, and ran to the shadowy hills, where fed the cattle of the Sun. From the herd heseparated fifty cattle, and he tried his best to covered the mark.
