Due to the government shutdown, many of the city’s best attractions, such as the national museums, are closed. It may affect your social plans. That’s especially true if you have out-of-town visitors coming to the District. Don’t worry! For every closed museum, we’ve offered up a suitable substitute that is privately run, thus not subject to the shutdown. Here’s where you can go instead.
Anacostia Community Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture Alternatives: Banneker-Douglass Museum or Alexandria Black History Museum The National Museum of African American History and Culture is one of the hottest draws on the National Mall, with free tickets taken weeks in advance. Its sister museum, the Anacostia Community (社区) Museum, takes a community-focused look at African American history. Glenstone sits on a 230-acre estate (土地) that doubles as an outdoor sculpture garden. Free tickets for Glenstone are often reserved weeks in advance, but 72 free tickets are available every day for anyone who takes a Montgomery County Ride-On Bus from Rockville Metro Station to the museum.

MacArthur’s love for sailing dates back to when she was just four years of age, when she fi rst got the opportunity to have a try. “I’ll never forget that feeling as a kid of setting foot on a boat for the fi rst time,” MacArthur said. “It kind of struck me that this boat had everything we needed to take us anywhere in the world. And as a child, that opened up everything,” she explained how it felt like the “greatest sense of freedom”.
This experience lighted a passion (热爱) within MacArthur. She knew then that she wanted to sail around the world. She had no idea how to achieve it — growing up in the countryside, it wasn’t the most obvious career (事业) path — but she knew that was what she wanted to do at some stage. So she acquired knowledge and saved up for years to seek a career in sailing. She would have potato and beans every day for eight years so that she could save up to buy the right equipment. By reaching certain fi nancial goals and asking technical questions about sailing, MacArthur felt as though she was getting closer to her ambitions.
“When you know where you’re going, you can actually get there — even if it seems impossible. The impossible could be possible and aiming high is not necessarily such a crazy thing to do.” And it seems that MacArthur’s drive to become a sailor went beyond her expectations. At the age of 24, she started to receive media attention after participating in the Vendee Globe, a single-handed non-stop yacht (帆船) race that goes around the world. She came in second place.
Some three to four years later, MacArthur chose to sail for 71 days and 14 hours, covering more than 26,000 miles during the course of her journey. This led to MacArthur scoring a new world record in 2005, as the fastest person to sail around the globe single-handedly. While this record has since been surpassed, MacArthur is still considered as Britain’s most successful offshore racer.
25. What happened to MacArthur when she was four?

B. She got fi nancial support for her am bitions.
C. She knew clearly about her career path.
D. She prepared herself for her goal.27. What happened to MacArthur in 2005?
A. She became the fastest person to sail around the world alone.
B. She began to gain a lot of media attention.
C. She took second place in a yacht race.
D. She had her record broken.
28. What does the story mainly tell?
A. Follow your own course, and let people talk.
B. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Doing is better than saying.
C
Where does fatigue come from? It doesn’t come from the body. Even when people exercise to extreme exhaustion (筋疲力尽), studies have shown that there is fuel left in the tank — one found there was enough energy left in human tissue for participants to have kept going for another seven or eight minutes. The brain puts the brakes on, stepping in to stop us from overusing and injuring ourselves long before we reach our actual limits.
According to the latest research, our physical endurance (耐力) is determined by our “sense of effort” — how much work the brain thinks that the body has done. But the brain can be tricked. In Brazil, a group of scientists improved power output in cyclists by 10% by running a small electric current (电流) through the brain. Elsewhere, it has been shown that giving athletes incorrect information about the temperature can help them keep their performance in hot conditions, and that lying to them about their split times can help them break personal bests.
In one study, Professor Samuele Marcora asked two groups of soldiers to do a time-to-exhaustion test, where they were asked to ride at a fi xed percentage of their maximum until they couldn’t any more. After 12 weeks of training the control group’s time-to-exhaustion had improved by 42%. The other group performed a mentally tiring task alongside their physical training sessions. Their time to exhaustion improved by 115%.
For your brain, running fi ve miles after a hard day’s work feels like the last fi ve miles of a much longer run. It offers a much better workout for your willpower. It’s mind over matter, and fortunately for athletes, the mind is much easier to control.
29. What does the underlined word “fatigue” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Pain.
B. Tiredness.
C. Injury.
D. Energy.
30. What can we learn from the text?
A. The time to exhaustion cannot improve.
B. The brain cannot stop us from reaching our limits.
C. The mind can be defeated by matter.
D. The brain can be misled by electric currents.
31. What is probably the best title for the text?
A. Keep on Running: Train Your Brain
B. How to Avoid the Feeling of Exhaustion
C. Willpower Can Defeat Fatigue
D. Don’t Trust Your Brain
D
There have been many problems with our schools today, the biggest of which is closely related to our culture. In general, our culture, as represented in the media, gets excited by famous stars, and constantly stresses that it’s what you have, not what you are, that counts. Parents are encouraged to be away from even very small children for most of the day. Too many voters go for politicians who would rather cut school funding (基金) than to get rid of tax cuts for the wealthy. All contribute greatly to the problems of educating our children.
Today’s teachers have to deal with a culture that is vastly different than in the past. They report that there is, among more children than ever, a lack of motivation, no drive to succeed or even try. The role models that boys view in the media mostly consist of men in comedies and other shows who are rude and often extremely immature; self-centered overpaid athletes; men in movies, television dramas, video games, etc. who are preoccupied with violence and power. As Leonard Sax wrote in “Boys Adrift”, “Teenage boys are looking for models of mature adulthood, but we no longer make any collective effort to provide such models.” Girls are attacked not only with such annoying images (形象) of males, but also with women who are preoccupied with appearance and are extremely materialistic.
In such a cultural environment, it is more important than ever to have responsible, loving and caring parents who have enough time and motivation to devote to their children and see to it as their duty to model for them and raise them with high standards of honesty and responsibility along with tending to their physical needs. They need to care enough to see that their children are not attacked with the garbage that comes from movie, television and computer screens. In today’s culture, they are basically alone in this effort since, unfortunately, so much is working against them.
Until we, as a culture, face the truth about ourselves — that we are not providing adequately for a great many of our children — the storm will continue to rage (肆虐) over our education system.
32. How is paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes.
B. By showing differences.
C. By describing a process.
D. By using time order.
33. What does today’s culture probably bring to the children?
A. Narrow access to entertainment.
B. Poor understanding abilities.
C. Few materialistic models.
D. Little desire for success.
34. We can learn from the text that in today’s culture parents need to .
A. devote more to their children
B. fi nd honest models for their children
C. keep their children away from computers
D. help their children develop motivation
35. What is the author’s attitude towards today’s culture?
A. Positive.
B. Ambiguous.
C. Dissatisfi ed.
D. Approving.

Slow down your pace. You may feel the need to move quickly from machine to machine. But if you stop to observe others around you, you’ll notice many of them are working out in a relaxed manner. So take your time, walk slowly and use that time to fi gure out your next move. 40 Other people are so focused on their routine that they’re most likely not paying attention to you anyway.
A. Get the plan ready and then follow it.
B. Then, sit down and write out the order of your workout.
C. Think of how many people are frequenting gyms each day.
D. Use this time to scan the gym instead of wandering around aimlessly.
E. Chances are, many of the people you’ll meet feel the same way you do.
