THEBAND THAT WASN'T(34页)
Have you ever wanted tobe part of a band as a famous singeror musician?Have you everdreamed of playing infront of thousands of peopleata concert, atwhicheveryone isclappingand appreciating your music? Do you singkaraok eand pretend you are afamous singerlike SongZuying or LiuHuan? To be honest, alotof people attach great importance tobecoming rich and famous. Butjusthow do peopleform a band?
Many musicians meetand form a band because they like to write andplay their own music. Theymay start as a groupo fhigh-schoolstudents, forwhompracticing their music in someone's house is thefirst step to fame.Sometimes they may p lay to passers-byin the street orsubway so thatthey canearnsome extra moneyfor themselves or to pay fortheir
instruments. Laterthey may give performances in pubs orclubs, for which they are paid in cash. Ofcourse they hope tomake records in a studio andsell millions ofcopies to become millionaire
s!
However, there was one band that started in a different way. It was ca lled the Monkees and beganas a TVshow.Themusicians were to play jokeson each other as wellasplay music, mostof which was based looselyon theBeatles. The TVorganizershad planned to find four musicians who couldact as
wellassing. They put anadvertisement in a newspaper lookingfor rock musicians, but they couldonly findonewho was good enough. They had touse actorsfor theotherthree membersoftheband.
As someofthese actorscouldnot singwell enough, theyhad torely on othermusicians to help them.So duri ng the broadcasts theyjust pretendedto sing. Anyhow thei rperformances were humorous enoughtobe copied by other gro
ups. They were so popularthattheir fans formedclubs in orde
rto get more familiarwith them. Each week on TV,the Monkees would play and singsongswrittenby other musicians. However, after a yearor so in which theybecamemoreseri ous abouttheirwork, the Monkeesstarted toplay and sing their own songs like areal band. Then they producedthei rownrecordsandstarted touring andplayingtheir ownmusic. Inthe USA they becameeven morepopular thantheBeatles and soldeven more records. Theband broke up about1970, but happily they reunitedin themid-1980s. They produced anew record in 1996,with whichtheycelebratedtheir form ertimeas a realband.
