【亲密关系】

◆can和could都是情态动词，在句中均不能单独作谓语，其后须接动词原形，与实义动词一起来充当句子的谓语。如：

I can watch TV for half an hour after supper every day.

每天晚饭后我可以看半个小时电视。

Could you speak a little English when you were five years old?

当你5岁时会说点英语吗？

◆can和could都可表示凭体力或脑力或技术等可以无甚阻力地去做某事的“能力”，意为“能、会”。如：

Can/ Could you finish the work alone in a week?

一周后你能独自完成这项工作吗？

◆can和could都可用来表示“请求、允许、许可”等意思，此时相当于may。如：

Can/Could/ May I borrow your Chinese-English dictionary? 我可以借你的汉英词典吗？【鲜明个性】

◆can表示现在的能力。如：

I can ride a bike to school every day.

我能每天骑自行车去上学了。

◆表示给予允许（即自己允许别人做某事）, 一般只用 can。如：

——Could/Can I use your new dictionary? ——Yes, of course you can. Here you are. ——我可以借用你的钢笔吗? ——当然可以。给你。(不能说成Yes, you could.)

【友情提醒】此时问句中could并不表过去，只表委婉语气。

◆can可以用来对现在或将来的推测，但通常只用于否定句或疑问句中，一般不用于肯定句。如：

Millie can’t be in the school library now. She has gone to the USA.

Millie现在不可能在学校图书馆里。她去美国了。

◆could用来表示过去想做某事就随时可做某事的能力。如：

Could you dance when you were a little child?

当你是个小孩时，你会跳舞吗？

◆用表示请求允许（即请求别人允许自己做某事），can和could均可用，但用could 语气更委婉。如：

Can/Could I play computer games for a moment now?

现在我可以玩会电脑游戏吗?

◆表示过去一般性允许（即表示某人随时都可以做某事），用could。如：

When I lived at home, I could watch TV with my grandparents.

我住在家里时, 我可以和我的爷爷奶奶一起看电视。

◆could也可以用来对现在或将来的推测，可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。如：

You could be right, but I don’t think you are. 你可能是对的，但我并不认为你是对的。
