I was walking into the office yesterday, minding my own business when all of a sudden I turned the corner and there it was, sitting on my chair. “Oh, my god,” I said surprisedly, “Zucchinin(西葫芦). “Isn’t that nice?” said Rachel, my workmate. “Somebody left zucchini for everyone!”
Have you ever noticed how somebody actually gives you zucchini? At least, not in the same way they give you corn or apples or tomatoes, I mean, if someone wants to give you a few fresh, juicy peaches off their tree, they walk right up and hand them to you. You’ll be pleased. It seems that they have confidence you will like their gift. But with zucchini, they left it and went away. No note No calling card. I thought zucchini is the abandoned orphan of t he vegetable kingdom.
“Yeah, it’s nice, ”I said. “Who should we thank for this gift?” “I don’t know,” Rac hel said. “You know how it is with zucchini.” Of course I do. Nobody actually grows it. At least, not on purpose. It just grows like weeds.
“So what are you going to do with yours?” I asked. “I’ll just do what I always do with zucchini.” She said.
This morning I stepped into my office area carefully, afraid of what might be there waiting for me. There was a piece of bread in a white box sitting on my desk. I picked it up. It smelled wonderful. I took a bite. It tasted wonderful.
“Who made the banana bread?” I asked. Rachel said, “It isn’t banana bread. It’s zucchini bread. ” I stopped chewing. “It’s delicious! But I hate zucchini”
“So do I,” Rachel admitted. “But a few years ago I found this great way to cook zucchini bread , and now I actually look forward to zucchini season”
I took another bite of the bread. I couldn’t help wondering :“How could anything so tasty come from something so distasteful?”
“It’s a fact of life,” Rachel said. “You mix effort with creativity and you can turn alm ost anything around”

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four. Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner. I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang. Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived. I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids. Each of the guests made a particular fuss over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a remarkable girl to be carrying coats upstairs at he r age.
I thought to myself that we adults(成年人)usually make a big "to do" over the younger one because she's the one who seems more easily hurt. We do it with the best of intentions. But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child. I was a little wor ried that Kristen would feel she was being out-shined. I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes. I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said, "What are you doing, my dear?"
She turned to me with a sad expression and said, "Mommy, why don't people like me the way they like my sister? Is it because I 'm not pretty? Is that why they don't say nice things about me as much?"I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend's home, I make it a point to speak to the elder child
first.
8. The underlined expression ' make a big "to do" over' (paragraph 3) means ______.

A. the guest gave her more coats to carry.
B. she didn't look as pretty as Kelly.
C. the guests praised her sister more than her.
D. her mother didn't introduce her to the guests.
11. We can conclude from the passage that ______.
A. parents should pay more attention to the elder children.
B. the younger children are usually more easily hurt.
C. people usually like the younger children more.
D. adults should treat children equally.
12. Which of the following statements is right?
A. Kristen and Kelly are not getting along with each other.
B. Kristen is older than Kelly.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list. 16 . Fear can also keep us from pursuing the things in life that really matter—like following our dreams, and developing important relationships. I have some ideas, though, of how to be free from fear.
●Experience fear.
I used to be very afraid of speaking in front of people. I would get sweaty palms and my stomach would be so tied up that I wouldn’t be able to eat. However, each time I spoke, I noticed afterwards that it wasn’t that bad. Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I make them out in my mind. 17 .
●Create space.
The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isn’t accomplished by ignoring the fear, or trying to talk ourselves out of it. 18 . In fact, a recent research shows that by simply admitting the emotion we actually begin to reverse the “fight or flight(逃避)” response in the body.
●Control the breath and feel the fear.
Once we acknowledge the presence of fear, the second step is to control the breathing so that it becomes slower and gentler. We try to make the breath just a little bit longer, and feel how fear manifests(展现)in the body. 19 .
With practice, we can create enough space between us and the emotion of fear so that we’re able to replace a fearful thought with a positive one. 20 . For instance, before I get up to speak in front of a group of pe ople, I imagine that the audience is positively impressed by what I say and that I manage to complete the speech successfully.
A. We can imagine a positive outcome for whatever we’re about to do.
B. Space is created only when we can honestly acknowledge that fear exists.
C. Fear, if left uncontrolled, can even destroy our life.
D. As we pay attention to the physical symptoms of fear, we can see fear objectively.
E. When we can see a positive outcome in our mind, fear no longer holds us back.
F. But fear is more than just physically unpleasant.
G. So one way to get rid of fear is to simply push ourselves to d o things that we fear. 第二部分完形填空(共20小题;每小题1. 5分,满分30分)

范文
Dear Mr Li,
I’m very excited to write to express my thanks to you. I am now a freshman of Wuhan University, which I have been dreaming about. Mr Li, I still remember the days when you
taught me English. My English has been improved greatly because of your creative work. However, at one time, the pressure of examinations, too much homework and the high expectations made me depressed. I was tired of the warning that if I didn’t do my best, I wouldn’t have the chance to go to college. Thanks for your encouragement; if not, I wouldn’t have realized my dream. And now I really understand you. I wish more and more of your students could go to their ideal colleges. Are you still so busy? How I miss you!
Hoping to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua。
