/'dwait 'deivid 'aisenhau∂(r)/德怀特·戴维·艾森豪威尔Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969), the thirty-fourth president of the United States, was born in a poor family in Texas in1890. He used to be the leader of the Allied forces in Europe in World War II. Because of his excellent gift in military, Eisenhower got the title “the General of the Army”(五星上将) and became one of the best known men in America. In 1948, he retired from military service to become president of Columbia University. In December 1950, he accepted President Harry Truman's appeal to become the first commander of the newly formed North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Here Eisenhower's remarkable gifts in dealing with various views were again fully exhibited. In 1953, with the strong support of the majority, he became the 34th American president.
During his presidency, America experienced a period of stability and flouring. He put forward to interfere with the mid-eastern affairs, which was called “Eisenhower Doctrine” and insisted the “cold war” policy. Thus, he became o ne of the critical figures of the formation of World Cold War structure. He supported all the governments who were against the Soviet Union. In 1960, he became the first American president to visit Jiang Government in Taiwan. He was also the founder of the interstate highways.
Although, during the presidency of him, its support rate was not high, yet, from 1980 until nowadays, the historical assessment about him became higher and higher. And he was always apprised as one of the first ten most popular American presidents.
