Research and Design of Storage Virtualization in a SAN
ABSTRACT
As the fourth generation of storage technology, Storage Area Network provides high connectivity and scalability of network storage device. However, with hundreds of heterogeneous storage devices and hosts connected by networks, the consequent complexity of storage management confused even sophisticated network administrator. It's the complex problem of storage management in SAN that result in storage virtualization.
Today one of the most confused topics in IT industry is storage virtualization. Although "virtual" has already come up with such concepts as virtual memory, virtual display, and virtual tape in OS design many years ago. But as to what is storage virtualization, there is no clear and standard definition by far.
There is lack of standards for SAN since SAN technology is in the stage of early development, so does the storage virtualization. True storage virtualization development is in its embryo stage for most storage industrial vendors, although many of them acclaim their accomplishments in storage virtualization.
In this article, the deficiency and defects of plain SAN management have been pointed out and therefore together with advantages of storage management of virtualization. After clear description of many storage virtualization schemes in different aspects, a virtualization scheme is set up on the basis of former IP-SAN plain disk resource management system.
In addition to management of physical disks in SAN, this scheme could create hierarchical storage pool and enables application servers in SAN the ability of using pool as a very big local disk. Total SAN virtualization could involve many details of both software and hardware in SAN. The virtualization design provided in this article is an extension of original IP-SAN management software. The contents of this article include the following topics:
1.Analyze the difficulties of plain SAN management and discuss the
deficiency of storage distribution for application level. Compared with storage virtualization, many advantages in technology for storage application are described in detail.
2.Describe in detail the concepts of storage virtualization and its various
solutions from different aspects, such as what storage virtualization creates, where virtualization layer resides, and how it is implemented
