In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a weight problem. To many people, the cause is obvious: we eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support

this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were leaner than today,

yet they ate more food. In those days people worked hard physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch tel evision.

Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on the average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as a 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people.

Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting fact: The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat. The more they ran, the greater increase

in food intake.

Thus, those who ran most ate most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

to himself. "Another day at that office,a boss who shouts at me all the time."

As Frank went downstairs, his eyes fell on a large brown envelope by the door. He was overjoyed when he opened it and read the letter inside. "Bigwoods Football Pools(赌博公

司)would like to congratulate you. You have won half a million pounds."

Frank suddenly became so excited. The cigarette fell from his lips as he let out shout

that could be heard halfway down the street.

At 11:30 Frank arrived at work. "Please explain why you're so late," his boss said.
