Colonization
the late 1700s
After initial expeditions, the Russians settled here in the 1780’s, and were quickly followed by the Spanish. However, the first Russian colonization program didn’t get underway until the early to mid-19th century.
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual
long-distance sled dog race run in early March from Anchorage to Nome(1510 km), entirely within the US state of Alaska.Mushers and a team of 14 dogs, of which at least 5 must be on the towline at the finish line, cover the distance in 8–15 days or more.
Barrow Whaling Festival
➢ This festival—called Nalukataq—is a tradition of the Inupiaq Eskimos of northern Alaska, held after the spring whale-hunting season to give the locals a chance to say thanks for a successful hunting season.
➢ Located in the northwest extremity of the United States West Coast, just across the Bering Strait from Asia.
➢ An exclave of the U.S., it borders the Canadian province of British Columbia and territory of Yukon to the east and southeast and has a maritime border with Russia's Chukotka Autonomous Okrug to the west.

A interesting story
Alaska once lived the same day twice. The state's transfer from the Russian Empire took place on 18 October 1867 (6 October in Russia where the Julian calendar was used) and its time zone changed from GMT +14 hours to GMT -10 hours, so enjoyed the same day twice. It's the only place on Earth where this has happened.
