My wife, Eleanor, and I took the train from Paris to Strasbourg, where we were met by our driver and guide, and the minibus which goes along with the boat. We stopped off in Barn for an hour on the way. Then we were taken to Nancy where the boat was kept.
After the other passengers arrived, we had our first dinner on the boat. After dinner we walked into downtown Nancy, a village with a large square and wooden houses.
Monday, October 6
Rained last night, cloudy in the morning, 69 °F
We spent about two hours in Nancy, then sailed on the Canal de la Marne au Rhine. Kind of a lazy day, eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After dinner we watched a tape on Baccarat, where we will visit tomorrow.
It was enjoyable to sit out on deck (甲板) and watch the scenery go by at about 3 mph. Tuesday, October 7
Light rain, 64 °F
This morning we drove over to Baccarat and toured its museum and the church, which has this unbelievable lamp that is going on a world tour the next day. We did lots of shopping, then walked across the bridge to see a very, very modem Catholic church with special Baccarat windows.
We drove to the top of the V oges Mountains and started down the eastern side. Later we drove to Sorrenbourg to see the 13th century church at the Cordeliers. It contains the largest window by Marc Chagall - 24 feet wide by 40 feet high.
Wednesday, October 8
Cloudy, 65 °F
Today we sailed from Schneckenhush to Saverne. We went through, two caves, an extremely unusual pave of the journey. This river scenery is very different. We were in a mountain valley with grassland on one side and a forest beginning to show some color on the other.

The Queen’s English is now sounding less upper-class, a scientific study of the Queen’s Christmas broadcasts has found. Researchers have studied each of her messages to the Commonwealth countries since 1952 to find out the change in her pronunciation from the noble Upper Received to the Standard Received.
Jonathan Harrington, a professor at Germany’s University of Munich, wanted to discover whether accent changes recorded over the past half century would take place within one person. “As far as I know, there just is nobody else for whom there is this sort of broadcast records,” he said.
He said the noble way of pronouncing vowels (元音) had gradually lost ground as the noble upper-class accent over the past years. “Her accent sounds slightly less noble than it did 50 years ago. But these are very, very small and slow changes that we don’t notice from year to year.”
“We may be able to relate it to changes in the social classes,” he told The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper. “In 1952 she would have been heard saying ‘that men in the bleck het’. Now it would be ‘that man in the black hat’.Similarly, she would have spoken of ‘the citay’ and ‘dutay’, rather than ‘c itee’ and ‘dutee’, and ‘hame’ rather than ‘home’. In the 1950s she would have been ‘lorst’, but by the 1970s ‘lost’.”
The Queen’s broadcast is a personal message to the Commonwealth countries. Each Christmas, the 10-minute broadcast is put on TV at 3 pm in Britain as many families are recovering from their traditional(传统) turkey lunch.
The results were published in the Journal of Phonetics.

A. she has been loved by many people for years
B. her speeches have been recorded for over 50 years
C. her speeches are popular with many people
D. she has a less upper-class accent now
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. The researches on the Queen’s life.
B. The changes in a person’s accent.
C. The recent development of the English language.
D. The relationship between accents and social classes.

A volcanic eruption(喷发) in Iceland has sent ash across northern Europe. Airlines have stopped or changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in the airports.
Grimsvotn is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvotn different is that it lies under a huge glacier of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice above it, which then forms a layer of water between the glacier and the volcano. This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable(稳定). As the water flows out from under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(岩浆) from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This is exactly what happens today.
Now, airlines have to make changes to their flights so as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic ash. According to KLM, one of Europe’s biggest airlines, airplanes ca nnot go under the cloud or over it. Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane’s engines, causing damage to the plane.
The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp, glass-like rocks all over the countryside. Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from eating ash-covered glass or the sharp object.
16. What makes Grimsvotn different from other volcanoes?
A. It lies under a huge sea.
B. It is the most active volcano.
C. It is below a thick layer of ice.
D. Its lava affects the airlines.
17. Which of the following is the result of the volcanic eruption?
A. Airlines suffer from the loss of planes.
B. People stop traveling in Europe.
C. Farmers have lost many of their animals.
D. It becomes dangerous for animals to eat outside.
18. This text is most probably taken from ___________.
A. a travel journal
B. a newspaper report
C. a geography textbook
D. a research paper

I believe that one of the best ways to connect with people and build quality relationships is through making conversation. Although most people can hold a conversation, only a few are smooth when they talk. I have discovered five simple and effective ways to be a smooth talker. Here they are:
Talk slowly
Generally, good talkers don’t rush into a conversation. ___19___ They act as if they have all the time in the world. This makes them come off as centered and collected. Model this way of talking and you will create the same effect.
Hold more eye contact
Most people keep eye contact about 2/3 of the time or less when they talk. ___20___ This will convey confidence and interest in communicating with them.
___21___
People with good conversation skills tend to notice the kind of things that the average person doesn’t notice, and to bring such details into the conversation. They may notice and point out an interesting ring on the other person’s hand, a certain foreign accent, or a certain voice tone they use when saying a name. Thus, such individuals impress people in a very elegant manner.
Express your emotions
___22___ Express your feelings about those facts. Keep in mind that it is at the emotional level that people connect best.
Use the best words
The ability to talk smoothly has a lot to do with choosing the right words to convey your feelings or thoughts. ___23___ It will help you develop a way with words and allow you to express yourself more easily.
Conversational skills don’t improve just like that. It takes time, practice and the ability to learn at a rapid rate from your own experiences.
A. Don’t just present the facts, you’re not a newspaper.
B. It’s a very good idea to hold eye contact just a bit more than that.
C. Notice the details.
D. It is important to improve conversational skills.
E. Offer interesting news.
F. They take their time when they think something over and when they say it out loud.
G. Develop your vocabulary and practice communicating as accurately as possible.
