3. Both the subject and the controlling idea in the topic sentence must be as specific as possible.
B. The supporting details
◆They are sentences used to support the main idea stated in the topic sentence.
◆They give more information about the main idea through examples or other ways.
◆They say in details what the topic sentence says in general.
◆They should be strong convincing points on which the topic sentence can rely upon.
◆ It prepares the reader for a smooth transition to the next paragraph if there is one.
For example
Opportunities do not come often. (topic sentence) They come every once in a while. (supporting detail 1) Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed.(supporting detail 2) Thereofore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care.(the concluding sentence)
Position:
Usually, but not always, the topic sentence is at or near the beginning of the paragraph. However, it is sometimes possible to put the topic sentence in the middle or at the end of the paragraph, depending on the arrangement of the idea.
◆ It is the closing sentence that reminds the readers of what they have to value.
◆ It is compulsory for the completion of the paragraph unity.
◆ It eventually indicates the end of a paragraph.
