1. A bus is a road (vehicle) designed to

carry passengers. Buses vary in capacity

from 8 to 300 passengers. Buses are widely

used in public transportation. A

long-distance bus is called a (coach).

Trolleybuses (无轨电车) use overhead

power lines.

2. A ferry is a form of transportation, usually a

boat, but sometimes a ship, used to carry

primarily passengers, and sometimes vehicles

and (cargo ) as well. Ferries form a part of the

public transport systems of many (waterside )

3. The subway, an underground urban railroad,

usually operated by electricity, is also known as

popular transport system in big cities for its

the back of the passenger cabin, such as Boeing

5. Hovercraft (气垫船) are used throughout the

world as specialized transports. Because they

1. How would you like to travel for a short distance in a big city, say, five to ten kilometers?

a hurry, or ride a bike if it is rush hour and the weather is fine.

2. Which is your favorite type of transport when you travel from one country to another, train, ship, or plane? Why?

Reference answer：A: I prefer planes because they are fast and time-saving.

B: I prefer trains because they are fairly fast, especially express trains; moreover, they're safe and comfortable if I book a cushioned berth. In contrast, a plane trip is usually more expensive and makes me feel unsafe, and a ship is too slow.

C: I prefer ships because they put me at ease with their big space and various entertainment facilities. They offer me a chance to enjoy myself better as a tourist without suffering a busy and crowded journey, which can hardly be avoided when traveling by train or plane.

3. Do you think riding bikes should be encouraged in big cities? Why?

Reference answer：In big cities where traffic jams are part of our daily life, as well as encouraging other methods (bus or subway, for example) we should encourage more people to travel by bike, especially for traveling short distances like a few miles from home to work, because riding bikes is good for the health, environmentally friendly, and money-saving.
