It is a book about a girl, Esperanza, whose name in English means hope. She lives in Mange Street, in an area of immigrants. Her whole family immigrate to America from Spanish. In that area, the yellow race are discriminated against by the white people. The shadow has been following her since she was a little girl, which often makes her sad. The writer, Sandra has undergone similar things which happened to Esperanza.

She was a special girl, with a heart sensitive to beauty, with a heart full of sympathy. She looks the world with her crystal eyes; she tells us her life in poetic language, a life about growing up, about setbacks, about enthusiastic dreams, about happiness as well as sadness.
