3 Eating right is extremely important for your health. A
good diet, along with regular exercise, can mean the difference between health and sickness. The U.S. Surgeon General has recommended that people eat three to five portions of vegetables, two to four servings of fruit, two to three servings of protein, two to three servings of dairy products, and six to eleven servings of breads and cereals every day. These recommendations also advise using fats, oils, and sweets sparingly. (trans.) Most people have the hardest time making sure that they eat the correct number and variety of vegetable portions. Many doctors tell people that they should try to eat vegetables at every meal in different colors to make sure that they get the correct nutrients.
• Many companies are now marketing directly to young teens and pre-teens. Major cosmetic and clothing manufacturers are producing brands that are attractive to a young market. The music and entertainment industries have traditionally marketed their products to the young, but now even the oldest institutions— banks—are looking to this new market.

2 Regular exercise will greatly improve your health. First, consult with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Choose an exercise that’s interesting for you. Many people start with walking—it’s cheap and easy! With any exercise, start slowly and build up to exercising twenty to sixty minutes three or five times a week. (trans.) Who said that it was going to be simple? So how do you begin? By exercising regularly and eating right.

3 The quality of the food that we eat matters too; the
whole grains found in whole-wheat bread, for example, are much more healthful than white bread. Fast foods are one reason that people today are overweight; you need to take the time to prepare meals that give you the nutrients you need. To limit calorie intake, stay away from second servings, except for vegetables. A reducedcalorie diet can be effective in helping people to live healthier and lose weight, but it’s important to remember that a drastic reduction of calories should only be done under the supervision of a doctor. The best way to lose weight is gradually through a combination of moderate exercise and a healthy diet.

2 Incorporate exercise into your daily routine: take the stairs instead of an elevator, or park at a farther distance from your job or school and walk farther. If you have children, exercising can be a family activity. Get yourself and your children doing some physical activity every day or at least every day that you can spend time together. Play catch, tag, or hide-and-seek, or take a walk together in place of watching television or playing video games. Make it a point to do a fun physical activity every day, even if only for ten minutes.
