Tom : Yes.But some people won’t succeed under too much pressure .Everyone tends to get impatient at times.And we all expect instant service.I know I hate even a short wait for an elevator.It’s no wonder there are so many stress-related health problems. Jerry : Mm, and people seldom pause to think what’s really important in their lives.I recently read an article in the newspaper that says a successful businessman told his elderly parents that he could buy them a big house, equip it with modern facilities, give them a lot of money , even hire someone to take care of them , but he couldn’t afford to spend one hour a week talking with them. He said he was too busy . Just one hour a week, but he still thought he couldn’t afford it! John : But I don’t think he teally couldn’t afford just one hour a week visiting his parents. It’s not a matter of time, but of his priorities. To him, making money is more important than family values.

• • One day an expert on the subject of time management was speaking to a group of business students and ,to stress a point ,used an illustration I’m sure those students will never forget .After I share it with you ,you’ll never forget it either . As this man stood in front of the group of high-powered overachievers ,he said ,”Okay ,time for a quiz .”Then he pulled out a large ,widemouthed jar and set it on a table in front of him .Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them ,one at a time ,into the jar. When the far was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside ,he asked ,”Is this far full?” Everyone in the class said ,”Yes.” Then he sid ,”Really?”He reached under the table and pulled out a bag of little stones .

The more pressed I seem to be , the more pressing everything seems to gert. You know, sometimes I envy people that lived a long time ago. They had so much more leisure time than us. Mike : That’s understandable. The pace of life is a lot faster now. We have many more choices to make. No wonder we feel we don’t have the time to do everything we want to do . Everyone is complaining that they don’t have enough time these days. John: It’s true the life is going faster now, but that doesn’t mean we have to try to do everything faster. Some people say that you can always manage to put something into your busy schedule.But I don’t think so. Time’s limitde.No one can deny there are 24 hours in a day. And squeezing something into an already full schedule is just impossible . It can drive a person crazy. Sometimes I…I have to drop things from time to time, but it makes me feel uncomfortable. Mike : Well, you can’t take on too much.We have to learn to give up something when there are loads of choices facing us.And it’s also up to us to decide which would be done first and which

Mike : you’re right about that.And he may pay a high price for st week, one of my former classmates told me that his father just found out he had lung cancer.And the doctor said it was terminal and his fsther may only have two months to live.My classmate said it was only then that he realized that he hadn’t been spending much time with his father.But now it’s almost too late. I tell you,I called my parents immediately.We had a very long chat ! Tom: I think we all need a reevaluation of what’s important in our lives every now and then. Jerry : You’re right. When we don’t have much time, we tend to pick and choose the things that are really important to us.And we make excuses for not giving enough time to the things we don’t want to do. John : That’s probably why we play computer games for relaxation, go to parties for enjoyment, and oversleep trying to stay healthy ! These are just excuses to put off what we really have to do. Sometimes,what we really lack is not actually time, but selfdiscipline and efficient planning. Tom : Yeah, we don’t appreciate many of the things we do have and we spend too much time complaining about the things that we don’t.(He sees the other three leaving.)hey, where are you going?
