Factories produce large amounts of harmful chemicals, which go straight into the atmosphere and make us sick. Other types of waste flow into our water, killing river and sea life. However, greedy businessmen hide from their responsibilities of dealing with waste. What’sworse, we need more land to live on and more food to eat in that the world’s population has grown by six times what it was in 1800. So, we are standing at a crossroads between the economy and the environment. On my personal note, a healthy environment and development should be possible at the same time. On one hand, laws should be passed to urge factories and industries to control the amount of pollution they produce and spend money repairing the damage they cause. On the other hand, it is our duty to cut back on production and reduce the amount of things we make and buy. Most importantly, we need to think more about recycling waste and teach people ways of living that are friendly to the environment.经济和环境—我们一定要选择吗?随着经济的发展,世界上大片地区都被化学废物所破坏。

The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved. As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly. The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation(开发) brings to such landscapes(景观) is real. Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need—the rainforests, for example, store carbon in vast quantities. To Mr.Sauven, these ”ecosystem services” far outweigh the gains from exploitation.Lee Lane, a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, takes the opposing view. He acknowledges that wildernesses do provide useful services, such as water conservation. But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation. There are ever more people on the Earth, and they reasonably and rightfully want to have better lives, rather than merely struggle for survival. While the ways of using resources have improved, there is still a growing need for raw materials, and some wildernesses contain them in abundance. If they can be tapped without reducing the services those wildernesses provide, the argument goes, there is no further reason not to do so. Being untouched is not, in itself, a characteristic worth valuing above all others.I look forwards to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants. One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little more directly. And there is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm. This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason. What position wilderness should enjoy in the preservation of the world obviously deserves much more serious thinking.67. John Sauven holds that_____.A. many people value nature too muchB. exploitation of wildernesses is harmfulC. wildernesses provide humans with necessitiesD. the urge to develop the ecosystem services is strong68. What is the main idea of Para. 3?A. The exploitation is necessary for the poor people.B. Wildernesses cannot guarantee better use of raw materials.C. Useful services of wildernesses are not the reason for no exploitation.D. All the characteristics concerning the exploitation should be treated equally.69. What is the author’s attitu de towards this debate?A. Objective.B. Disapproving.C. Skeptical.D. Optimistic.70. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A. B. C. D.CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: ConclusionBKing Sol omon, the most powerful and the most respected Israeli king, once said, “Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value a man who speaks the truth.” He wrote a book called Proverbs, which is part of the Bible and studied carefully even today. There was a college graduate in Wuhan who shared his own experience about being truthful. It is a good lesson for everyone who reads of his experience.Mr. Lou went to work for a factory making electrical machines. On the first day of his job, he accidentally broke an electrical machine because of his inexperience. Since it was very expensive, it caused Mr. Lou to become frightened about what his boss might say to him. The machine was worth his six months’ salary. He decided to try and repair it. After working on it for about 2 hours, he could make it function, but it didn’t work as well as it should. After spending a restless night, Mr. Lou felt he must tell his boss the truth. The next morning, he showed the broken machine to his boss nervously, for he didn’t know wha t the result would be. To his great surprise, the boss praised him for being truthful and even later gave him a rise.Mr. Lou never forgot this dramatic experience. There was the public male realm(领域)of "rational accomplishment" and cruel competition, and the private female and child-rearing sphere of home, intuition(直觉)and emotion. The private realm was supposed to be isolated from the realities of adult life. For both better and worse, television and other electronic media tend to break down the difference between those two worlds. The membrane around the family sphere is much more permeable(可渗透的). TV takes public events and transforms them into dramas that are played out in the privacy of our living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.Parents used to be the channel through which children learned about the outside world. They could decide what to tell their children and when to tell it to them. Since children learn to read in stages, books provide a kind of natural screening process, where adults can decide what to tell and not tell children of different reading abilities. Television destroyed the system that separated adult from child knowledge and separated information into year-by-year slices for children of different ages. Instead, it presents the same information directly to children of all ages, without going through adult filters. So television presents a real challenge to adults. While a parent can read a newspaper without sharing it with children in the same room, television is accessible to everyone in that space. And unlike books, television doesn't allow us to flip(翻转)through it and see what's coming up. We may think we're giving our children a lesson in science by having them watch the Challenger take off, and then suddenly they learn about death, disaster and adult mistakes.Books allow adults to discuss privately what to tell or not tell children. This also allows parents to keep adult material secret from children and keep their secret keeping secret. Take that same material and put it on The Today Show and you have 800,000 children hearing the very things the adults are trying to keep from them. "Television takes our kids across the globe before parents give them permission to cross the street."More importantly, children gradually learn that adults are worried and anxious about being parents. Actually, television has also places families under a lot of stress.1. Homes2. public3.connected4.indirectly5.books6.difference7. Content8. decided/ chosen9.adult 10. challenges。
