其中，沿用母案的特征部分可主张母案的优先权日。

Continued Prosecution Application (CPA) 延续审查案：延续审查案通常会在申请人收到最终核驳后的六个月内提出。

通常提出延续审查案的目的是为了延续审查。

另外，延续审查案并不能用在2000年5月29日起申请的「发明专禾申请案」或是「植物专禾申请案」，新式样专禾并没有在此限。

Claim 请求项或称权禾项：请求项是用来定义专禾的保护范围的部分。

Defen sive Pate nt 防御专利：有的人申请专禾的目的并不在于主动攻击竞争对手，而是希望将来被控告专禾侵权时，可以禾用这些专禾保护自己并予以反击。

在这种状况下，竞争对手在考虑控告侵权前，由于害怕将来被对方以这些专禾反控侵权，常会因而打消控告的念头。

这样的专禾由于具有防御的功能，因此称为防御专禾。

Declaration 声明书：声明书是申请美国专禾时需缴交的文件，发明人必须在文件中声明自己为真正的发明人、声明已阅读和了解说明书内容，以及会向专禾局揭露任何与申请案专禾性有关的技术资料。

Defensive Patent 防御专利：有的人申请专利的目的并非在于主动解决竞争对手，而是希望以后被控诉专利侵权时，能够利用这些专利爱惜自己并予以还击。

在这种状况下，竞争对手在考虑控诉侵权前，由于可怕以后被对方以这些专利反控侵权，常会因此打消控诉的念头。

如此的专利由于具有防御的功能，因此称为防御专利。
