1The Expensive Fantasy of Lord WilliamsTomintoul, Scotland —On Saturday night at The Grouse's Nest, they're still willing to raise a glass or two to “Lord Williams” though now his title prompts laughter. And now they just call him “Tony”.There are those in this beautiful village in the mountains of Scotland (population, 320) who say they were never quite sureabout Anthony Williams, the soft-spoken, wealthy noble who arrived in 1986 with his well-dressed wife. And there are others who say their suspicions were aroused over time, as the 55-year-old Mr. Williams, who appeared onweekends turned out in fine suits, bought up property after property, providing such a large injection of cash into the villagethat he single-handedly brought the community back to life. But no one could have possibly guessed the truth — that the man with endless money and a friendly manner was not a lordat all but a government employee living out a fantasy that he was a Scottish noble and paying for it by stealing funds fromScotland Yard.About two weeks ago, a regretful Mr. Williams, who had worked for the London police since 1959 and had risen to a £65,000 a year position as deputy director of finance, was brought into court and sentenced to seven and a half yearsinprison.Estimates are that he poured nearly £5 million of the stolen money into the village and gave jobs to 43 people. And nowthat he has fallen upon dark days at least some villagers are sticking by him.“I found him a very charming man, very friendly, considerate —not at all proud,” said Georgie McAllister, 70, themanager of the local museum whose family has been farming the surrounding hills for generations. “It's hard to understandhow a clever person like him could mislead people like that. It's sad. Of course, it did benefit the village. A lot of the propertieswere beautifully restored.”A few doors down the square, barber Donald Corr sat inside his shop and described how suspicions began to grow. “Everyonewondered where the money was coming from. Why was he spending it in a little place in the mountains? Christ, he wouldn'thave gotten it back in 100 ye ars.”According to the court, Mr. Williams stole more than £8 million over eight years. Most of it came from a secret fund thathad been placed under his sole authority and that was supposed to be used to pay spies and conduct secret activities againstthe Irish Republican Army.Instead, it went to create one more British lord.Mr. Williams bought an estate with a fine brick house in England. He bought a beautiful home with white walls and a poolin Spain. He bought noble titles at auctions, spending £95,000 to become the Lord of Chirnside, and then adding on 10 moreScottish titles. But most of all, he sunk his dishonest gains into this village that captured his heart with its fine stone cottages, its centralareaof green grass, green rows of hedges, and its fantastic view of rolling fields and pine forests disappearing into the distancelike the men of an ancient army marching over the horizon. He bought multiple cottages and fixed them up. He purchased the pub and made it into a fine place to have a glass ofGlenlivet Scotch whiskey, produced only 10 miles (16 kilometers) to the north. And most of all, he bought the run-downGordon Arms Hotel and totally restored it, transforming it from a mess into a glorious first-class hotel with 30 handsomelyfurnished rooms, wood-paneled stairs, false bookshelves with fake leather books and an outstanding restaurant.“I would offer him three choices of glasses for the restaurant: an average one, a poor one, and fine crystal. Always, he chosethe crystal. Nothing but the best,” said David Abdy, who was chosen by Mr. Williams to manage the construction work andrun the businesses.Mr. Williams deceived everyone, including Mr. Abdy and including even his own wife, telling them that he inherited themoney from a rich uncle. He was caught because his bank deposits were so large that they were noticed by the bank'smanagement. The bank notified the police, who discovered, to their terrible embarrassment, that the criminal was one oftheir own.The London police commissioner publicly apologized for poorly supervising his department. Under a hastily madearrangement, the police will sell the properties, but at a substantial financial loss. Mr. Abdy, a 27-year-old businessman, acquired the bulk of the properties for about half a million pounds, obtaining bank loans and striking deals withvarious peopleto pay only a part of what they are owed by Mr. Williams. In the only interview he has given since his arrest a year ago, Mr. Williams discussed his motives for the crime with aLondon newspaper: “I discovered this bloody huge amount of money. I went from the need to pay off a few debts to what canonly be described as greed. There is no way to justify it.”

With the increasing number of university graduate fail to find a job, some parents start to hold the opinion that going to university is nothing but waste money and time. They argue that if family has the money to support child to attend to university, they would rather to spend the money to support their child to start their own business, which might get more reward than go to university. In my point of view, I cannot agree with that.In the first place, university is not a place only to learning knowledge from books, but also it could open a door to a brand new world to students. For instance, there are lots of students’ association in university, students could choose one or two to learn and practice their skills according to their hobbies, such as a university entrepreneurs club is a nice chose for a student who are going to start their own business after graduated, it will help them to make less mistakes on the road to success. In the second place, who could guarantee that a high school graduates would make a success in business field. Apparently they are lack of professional business knowledge and experience. What’s the most important is that they are lack of contacts. Those factors will make them fail every easily, even though they have a strong money backup from their parents. To speak frankly, students should go to university if they get the chance. It will be totally different from go to the social college.。

The Necessity of Children Learning EnglishOnlineIn the rapidly advancing technological era, theinternet has become an integral part of our daily lives, and its influence on education is profound. Among various subjects, English stands out as a language that benefits greatly from online learning, especially for children. The question of whether children should learn English through online platforms has become a hot topic of discussion. In my opinion, children should indeed embrace the opportunity to learn English online.Firstly, online English learning provides children with a vast array of resources. The internet is a virtuallibrary full of educational materials, interactive games, and engaging videos that cater to different learning styles and interests. These resources not only make learning more enjoyable but also allow children to explore and expand their knowledge beyond the confines of a traditional classroom.Secondly, online learning fosters a personalized learning experience. Unlike traditional classrooms whereall students are taught at the same pace, online platforms allow children to learn at their own speed. Thisflexibility encourages children to take ownership of their learning and allows them to progress at a pace that suits them best. Moreover, personalized learning enables teachers to identify and address specific learning needs, thus enhancing the overall learning experience. Moreover, online English learning enhances language immersion. Through interactive platforms and real-time communication with native speakers, children can practice their speaking and listening skills in a safe and supportive environment. This immersion in the language helps them develop a better understanding of English grammar, vocabulary, and cultural nuances, thereby improving their overall language proficiency.Additionally, online learning cultivates children's technological savvy. As they navigate through online platforms, they learn basic computer skills such as typing, searching, and using various educational tools. This technological proficiency not only supports their academicgrowth but also prepares them for future careers in adigital world. However, it is important to note that while online learning offers many advantages, it also comes with challenges. Parental supervision and guidance are crucialto ensure that children make healthy use of the internetand avoid any harmful content. Furthermore, a balanced approach combining online and offline learning should be adopted to ensure comprehensive development of children's English proficiency. In conclusion, children should definitely embraceonline English learning. The wealth of resources, personalized learning experiences, language immersion opportunities, and technological proficiency it providesare invaluable assets in their academic and personal growth. With the right guidance and supervision, online English learning can be a transformative experience for children, opening up new horizons of knowledge and opportunities.**孩子应该学习网络英语的必要性**在科技迅猛发展的今天,互联网已成为我们日常生活中不可或缺的一部分,其对教育的影响也是深远的。

Why Should Kids Go to University? An Elementary Student's PerspectiveYou know how grown-ups are always nagging us kids to study hard so we can go to a good university? I used to think it was just because they wanted us to get good jobs and make lots of money when we're older. But after giving it some serious thought, I realized there's way more to it than that!Going to university isn't just about getting a fancy job, although that's definitely part of it. It's about learning a ton of awesome new things and becoming a well-rounded person. Let me break it down for you:First off, university allows you to dive deep into subjects you're passionate about. In elementary and high school, you've got to take a little bit of everything - math, science, English, history, and so on. But at university, you get to pick a "major" which is the subject you'll focus on the most.Let's say you're obsessed with dinosaurs and fossils like I am. You could major in paleontology and take classes just on dinosaurs, prehistoric plants and animals, excavating fossils, and all that good stuff. No more struggling through algebra orgrammar lessons when you'd rather be learning about T-Rexes and Triceratops all day!Secondly, university introduces you to amazing concepts and ideas you've never encountered before. For example, apparently there's this thing called "philosophy" where people think really hard about major questions like "What is the meaning of life?" or "Does God exist?" I had no clue that was even a thing people studied until my aunt mentioned she took a philosophy class at university.Or what about examining nuclear physics or analyzing classic literature? Sure, we read books and learn about science in school already. But university lets you go way deeper and understand ideas at an expert level. Just imagine - instead of staying at a "Kid Genius" level in your favorite subjects, you could become a legitimate grown-up genius! How cool is that?Speaking of becoming a genius, universities are packed with tons of incredibly smart professors who have dedicated their whole lives to understanding their field of study inside and out. I'm talking about real-life brainiacs who have made groundbreaking discoveries or wrote books that changed how we think. Getting advice and learning directly from thesebig-shot experts would be an incredible opportunity! But you don't just get smart in the classroom at university. Living away from home in the dorms and being part of campus life is an awesome way to mature and learn responsibility. My older cousin says she basically became an adult after her first year living in the dorms and managing her own life, money, schedule, and all that jazz.Plus, you get to meet people from all over the world with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Instead of just hanging out with the same kids from your town, you can befriend people from across your country or even from other continents! Imagine learning about different cultures, sharing ideas with people who think differently than you, and maybe even picking up a new language from an international roommate. Talk about aneye-opening experience! And let's not forget about the fun side of university life - joining clubs, going to sports games, parties (supervised by adults, of course!), spring break trips, and more. My older brother assures me that university isn't all stuffy classrooms and libraries. You have tons of opportunities to make friends, try new activities, and just have an all-around blast. Now, I know what you're thinking - "But Adam, university is super expensive! That's probably why parents want us to go - so we can get high-paying jobs to give them grandkids."You've got a point there. The cost of tuition, housing, meal plans, and everything else definitely adds up. But that's why doing well in elementary and high school is crucial - good grades can help you earn scholarships to make university way more affordable for your family.Plus, statistics show that people who go to university typically make way more money over their lifetime than those who don't. So yeah, the price tag is hefty. However, you're basically investing in your future by attending university. It's like using your family's money today to unlock way more money and opportunities down the road.At the end of the day, I think parents want us to go to university because it allows us to follow our passions, continue learning at the highest level, become independent adults, expand our worldview, and open up tons of doors careerwise. Basically, university gives you the tools and experiences to live a fulfilling, successful life doing something you really care about. And hey, even if we DO go just to make our parents happy and give them grandkids someday...at least we'll be happy, prosperous, well-educated grandkids, right? I'd say that's a fair trade-off!So to all my fellow kids out there - even though university seems ages away, start studying hard today. The amazing experiences of university will be well worth the years of nagging from parents and teachers. Just think - pretty soon you could be a bonafide dinosaur expert or rocket scientist instead of just playing make-believe. Now that's something to get excited about!。
