课时提升作业十六必修4Unit 1Women of achievement(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AIt’s not just kids who are overdoing screen time. Parents are often just as guilty of spending too much time checking smart phones and emails. And the consequences for their children can be troubling.Dr. Jenny Radesky is a pediatrician(儿科医生)specializing in child development. When she worked at a clinic in a high-tech Seattle neighborhood, Radesky started noticing how often parents ignored their kids in favor of a mobile device(装置). Radesky was so concerned that she decided to study the behavior. After relocating to Boston Medical Center, she and two other researchers spent one summer observing 55 different groups of parents and young children eating at fast food restaurants. “Many of the caregivers pulled out a mobile device right away, ” she says. “They looked at it, scrolled on it and typed for most of the meal, only putting it down occasionally. ”This was not a scientific study. Radesky is quick to point out. It was more like anthropological(人类学的)observation, complete with detailed field notes. Forty of the 55 parents used a mobile device during the meal, and many, she says, were more absorbed in the device than in the kids.Radesky says that’s a big mistake, because face-to-face interactions are the primary way children learn. “They learn language, they learn about their own emotions, and they learn how to regulate them, ” she says. “They learn by watch ing us how to have a conversation, and how to read other people’s facial expressions. And if that is not happening, children are missing out on important development milestones(里程牌). ”In research for her book, Steiner-Adair interviewed 1, 000 children between the ages of 4 and 18, asking them about their parents’ use of mobile devices. The language that came up over and over again, she says, was “sad, mad, angry and lonely. ” Steiner-Adair says we don’t know exactly how much these mini moments of disconnection between a parent and child affect the child in the long term. But based on the stories she hears, she suggests that parents think twice before picking up a mobile device when they’re with their kids.【文章大意】Jenny Radesky博士是一位专攻儿童发育的儿科医生。

课时提升作业十二必修3Unit 2Healthy eating(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AIt is said that there’s no such things as a free lunch, but even if you manage to beg a bargain meal, it will not taste as good as a more expensive choice, according to scientists.A new study has found that restaurant goers who pay more for the food is tastier than offered for a smaller price. The experts think that people tend to associate cost with quality and this changes their perception(感知) of how food tastes.Scientists at Cornell University studied the eating habits of 139 people who enjoy an Italian buffet in a restaurant. The price of the food was set by the researchers at either $4 or $8 for the all-you-can-eat meal. Customers were asked to rate how good the food tasted, the quality of the restaurant and to leave their names. The experiment showed that the people who paid $8 enjoyed their meal 11% more than those who ate the “cheaper” buffet. Interestinglythose that paid for the $4 buffet said they felt guiltier about loading up their plates and felt that they overate. However, the scientists said that both groups ate around the same quantity of food in total.Brian Wansink, a professor of consumer behavior at the university, said, “we were fascinated to find that pricing has little effect on how much one eats, but a huge effect on how you interpret the experience. ” He thinks that people enjoyed their food more as they associated cost with quality and that small changes to a restaurant can change how tasty people find their meals. In a previous study, researchers from the university showed that people who eat in bright lighting consume more than eat in less brightly lit areas.【文章大意】俗话说天底下没有免费的午餐, 但科学家表示, 即使你享用了便宜的饭菜, 它的味道也没有昂贵饭菜好吃。

Twice a year, his magazine, La Hulotte, focuses on an animal or plant native to the French countryside. The 100th edition was published in November. The magazine counts more than 150, 000 subscribers in many countries, and is doing very well financially. Deom says it all began in January 1972, when he was teaching science in a one-room schoolhouse here. “It upset me how the forests and swamps were beginning to be ruined. The word ‘ecology’ (生态学) didn’t really exist yet. Some friends and I wanted to call attention to the issue. So we said, let’s educate the kids. They’re ready to hear our message. ” So he took a step into the unknown, planning to publish his nature journal.Deom does all the research and writing and the illustrations (插图) of the magazine by hand. He combines science and humor in his writing and drawing to describe the daily life and sufferings of his creatures. Biologist Jerome Fournier began subscribing to La Hulotte when he was just eight years old. “For me it was the first contact with nature when I was a child. And maybe it’s the beginning for my life of scientist. I think so. ”What’s amazing is its approach. 课时提升作业三十六选修8Unit 1 A land of diversity(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解My father was a taxi driver but I am a king—King Renato, of the country Pontinha, an island on Funchal harbour. It’s in Madeir a, Portugal, where I grew up. It was discovered in 1419; Captain Cook once came here.In 1903, the Portuguese government didn’t have enough money to build a harbor port, so the king sold the land to a wealthy British family, the Blandys, who make Madeira wine. Fourteen years ago, the family decided to sell it for just £25, 000 (£19, 500). I decided to buy it though I had no money—I was just an art teacher.I tried to find some business partners, but they all thought I was crazy to want to buy what is actually a large rock; it has a small cave, a platform on top, and no electricity or running water. So I sold some of my possessions, put my savings together and bought it.When the king of Portugal originally sold the island in 1903, he and all the governors signed a document, selling all the “possessions and thedominions (领土)” of the island. It means I can do what I want with it—I could start a restaurant, or a cinema, but nobody thought that someone would want to start a country. So that’s what I did: I decided that this would no longer be just a rock on the port of Funchal. It would be my island, about the size of a one-bedroom house. After I bought it, the governor of Madeira asked to buy my island. Of course, I said no. He said that unless I sold it back to the state, he wouldn’t let me connect to any electricity. But I have a solar panel and a small windmill, and maybe in the future I will be able to generate power from the ocean around Pontinha.【文章大意】这是一篇记叙文。

课时提升作业四必修1Unit 4Earthquakes(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AMexico sites on an island plateau (高原) surrounded by volcanic peaks, which makes air quality a constant concern for people who live there. In April, the country took a decisive step toward improving air quality by enacting a temporary ban on private and Federal vehicles in the city. The rule forbids people from driving in the city one day each week and one Saturday each month. Electric vehicles, government service vehicles, public transport options and school buses are not included in the ban.Mexico City isn’t the first urban center to be involved in car-free living. But the ban is more than an awareness-raiser. It was enacted with the direct aim of solving air pollution. In March, the city sank into a deep brown haze of smog when the pollution levels passed the 200 mark. The city ordered some 1. 1m of the area’s 4. 7m cars off the streets and alsooffered free bus and subway rides.Mexico City’s temporary vehicle ban raises questions about the best ways to improve urban air quality. India, whose citizens breathe some of the world’s dirtiest air, has tried a variety of solutions. Earlier this year, the Indian government started a 4% sales tax on new-car purchases. Beijing also has experience with cleaning the air. The city introduced alternate-day rules in advance of the 2008 Olympic Games, which produced good results. And then there is the London congestion (拥挤) charge, introduced in 2003. The charge has had a measurable effect on air quality. For now, Mexico City—named by the United Nations as the most polluted city on the planet in 1992—can look forward to the start of the region’s rainy season, when daily showers will help to clean the air.【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。

课时提升作业二十三必修5Unit 3Life in the future(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解Driving on up to Yosemite with my family was exciting but nerve-racking(令人紧张的). I had never been to such an amazing national pa rk before, yet I wasn’t the most athletic person, so I knew that I couldn’t stick through all the hiking up and down. It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience. The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though I fell a couple of times, I still had a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together all trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together. The great thing about nature is that, it’s just you, the views, and the peo ple around you. There’s nothing to bother you and it’s the best way to relax and enjoy yourself, Yosemite has 5 of the world’s highestwaterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it’s formed in ways that almost take y our breath away. Some of them are of a deep dark color with waterfalls forming; some are formed with spots of green peeking(窥探)out. It’s definitely something you wouldn’t want to miss.Yosemite isn’t the only great national park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It’s a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature offers.【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

课时提升作业二十五必修5Unit 5First aid(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解A“How do you account for your remarkable achievements in life? ”Queen Victoria of the UK asked Helen Keller. “How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf, you were able to achieve so much? ”Ms Keller’s answer is a tribute(致敬) to her kind teacher. “If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown. ”According to speaker Zig Ziglar, Annie Sullivan was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless herself and was, at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly “insane” by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement of a mental institution. Occasionally, Annie would violently attack anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in her presence. An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and shemade it her work to show love to the child. Every day she visited Annie, and she left cookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Annie could recover, if only she were shown love.Eventually, doctors noticed the change in the girl. Where they once witnessed anger and hate, they now noted a gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless” child was released.Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined(约束)her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the flickering candle that was her life became a beacon(灯塔) of light to the world. Anne Sullivan worked wonders in Helen’s life; but it was a loving nurse who first believed in little Annie and lovingly transformed an uncommunicative child into a kind teacher.“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unk nown. ” But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan would have remained unknown.【文章大意】文章主要讲述了被一度认为有精神问题的Annie Sullivan, 在一位护士的关心与爱护下, 慢慢恢复健康, 重新点燃了她生命的灯塔。

课时提升作业二十六选修6Unit 1Art(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AMartha Graham, born in 1894, was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Martha’s parents didn’t approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing. In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle, which signaledthe beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy. Once again, she was met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn’t give up. Her last completed ballet was 1990’s Maple Leaf Rag.A D ancer’s World is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She was the first dancer to receive the country’s highest civilian honor. She died in 1991. In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the “Dancer of the Century” and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.【文章大意】本文属于说明文, 作者通过这篇文章主要向我们描述了现代舞之母玛莎·格兰姆的一生以及她在舞蹈方面的成就。

Likea lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. The line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier, who was receiving money from customers. He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the goods they were purchasing. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going? ” But he did something differe nt—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and talk with them briefly.I thought it was strange, but I guessed I had grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of a conversation withoutthinking. Usually, after a while, you don’t give any thought to the question and just say something back quietly. This old cashier seemed sincere about wanting to know how people were feeling. Meanwhile, the high-tech cash register rang up their purchases and he announced what they owed. When customers handed money to him, he pushed the appropriate keys, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change. Then magic happened. He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today, ” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye. ” The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless. Now it was my turn. I glanced down at the name tag on his red waistcoat, the kind experienced Wal-Mart cashier wore. It read, “Marty. ”Marty told me how much I owed and I handed him some money. The next thing I knew he was standing beside me, offering his right hand and holding my change in his left hand. His kind eyes locked onto mine. Smiling, and with a firm handshake. . .【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文, 讲述了收银员Marty在超市的工作情况, 他真诚礼貌地对待每一位顾客, 在意自己做的每件事。

课时提升作业三十二选修7Unit 2Robots(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AMaybe it has been the influence of the current scene: the type among urban biking. Apparently, urban biking requires entirely different bikes than suburban hiking does and therefore a Bike Design Project started, where five design studios across five cities had to come up with a perfect urban bike. The winning bike will be manufactured for a limited run of 100 hikes and will be in stores next year. Industry, a Portland-based studio, came up with a very interesting bike: one that uses bluetooth and handlebars (车把手) that tell you when to stop or turn.Industry worked together with Ti Cycles to create a bike with a 3D printed titanium frame (钛框架). The bike is called Solid and can be connected to a smartphone APP: My Bike. This APP alarms a user when a light needs replacement and if something gets wrong with one’s brakes. There is also software called Discover My City, which has a s eries of routes through Portland’s most trendy neighborhoods, withsuggestions about where to eat and shop.Nevertheless, the idea with cycling is that you need to focus on the road and not on your smartphone. This bike therefore uses integrated feedback on handlebars. Those handlebars tell a user when to turn, as they will buzz when a turn appears. As you are getting closer, they will buzz more frequently. And then there is the possibility to control your light via built-in sensors and change gears by pressing an electronic button.Although the bicycle looks highly interesting and can be seen as a piece of art for the designing world, we don’t know if we would like our bike to have an automatic buzz when we are approaching a turn. On the other side, it could add some extra safety to traffic in general. Whether you like the bike or not, you have to admit the Portland-based studio brings the concept of urban biking to a whole new level.【文章大意】本文介绍一种未来将要出现的一种新型自行车。

课时提升作业二十七选修6Unit 2Poems(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AIn ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老) treated the message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, a bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain. ”I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago. ”Dreams ofhead-cutting! It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered(传递). Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and big winners do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising his patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he fails to get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.Unfortunately, many peop le are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toasted beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveller or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces.Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, that’s all right. I’ll catch the next one. ”Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轰炸的) person is sure to have.【文章大意】本文主要讲述当我们要告诉别人不好的消息的时候, 要注意说话的方式和语气, 还要带有同情心。

The players of the All Blacks, New Zealand’s national rugby team, are strong, smart and fast. But, in fact, they win many of their games before the first whistle even blows. Before the game, during warm-ups, the All Blacks players gather in a semicircle. They stand with their captain in front of them and begin to dance. They hit their arms against their legs. They lift their feet into the air and slam them into the ground. They stick out their tongues and show the whites of their eyes. They shout ancient words and evenscream. You may think they’re crazy. And that is just what they want you to think. The rugby players perform the haka, which is a traditional Maori(毛利人)dance. The Maoris are the native people of New Zealand and this dance has been used as a war dance since the 19th century.Warriors originally performed the war dance before battles to show off their strength in order to intimidate the enemy. Rugby is a violent game that many fans have compared to war. What better way is there to get excited before the game than doing a war dance? The 19th century French theorist Ernest Renan, one of the first real theorists who looked into the idea of nationalism, described the“nation”as“large-scale togetherness, made up of the feeling of sacrifices that one has made in the past and of those that one is prepared to make in the future”.And New Zealand’s haka is one of the world’s most perfect acts of nationalism. “The haka, in its intensity, reflects it all: first, the solidarity(团结)of warriors—both of Maoris and non-Maoris backgrounds—fighting for a common future. And then a recognition of the almost sacred past. ” The Washington Post noted.Today in New Zealand, the haka is still performed at many different gatherings and celebrations, a connection to Maori ancestors that has continued despite colonization.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了新西兰的haka, 一种能够展示力量并团结新西兰人的传统舞蹈。
