(20%) ( A ) More and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities around the world. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure--- those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity, which may only lost a few minutes or even seconds. I would consider Bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon) 200 meters above the ground with a rope tied to your ankles(脚踝). You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried Bungee jumping. Other activities that are as risky as Bungee jumping including jumping from tall building and diving (潜水) into the sea from a high place. Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists (心理学者)suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people ’s lives were often in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not be easily cured, and life was a continuous battle for them. Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in rather safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. Theunderground economy is that part of the economy not measured in official statistics. After taking into account those individuals who are "employed" in the underground economy, the unemployment rate in Spain would have been lower (but still relatively high).32)Discouraged workers are those individuals who have decided to stop searching for employment because they havebecome "discouraged" about employment opportunities. At some point, these individuals will no longer be considered as part of the labor force. The existence of discouraged workers will cause the official unemployment rate to provide an under-estimate of the underutilization of labor.33)GDP can be measured three ways. First, GDP represents the market value of the final goods and services produced inthe economy during a given period. This would be obtained by adding C, I, G, and NX. Second, GDP is the sum of the value added by firms. The value added for a firm equals the value of the production (at that stage of the production process) minus the value of the intermediate goods (excluding labor services). The final value of aggregate output can be calculated by either summing the value of all final goods and services OR by summing the value added of all goods and services at each stage of production. And finally, GDP is also the sum of all incomes earned in a given period.。

Also, ratios of twotemperatures cannot be formed so that one data value is expressed as a multiple of the other. The temperature 2°C is not twice as warm as 1°C.1.3Data Collection and Experimental Design1Decide Whether Study is Observational Study or Experiment1)A2)A3)A4)A5)A6)A7)The experimental units are the 98 adults in the study. A sample is then randomly selected from each of the strata. A stratified sample has members from each segment of the population. In cluster sampling, the population is divided into naturally occurring subgroups, each having similar characteristics. All of the members in one or more (but not all) of the clusters are then selected. In a cluster sample, care must be taken to ensure that all clusters have similar characteristics.31)A census is a count or measure of an entire population, while a sampling is a count or measure of part of a population.A census provides complete information but is often expensive, difficult, and time consuming to perform especially ifthe population is large. A sampling is less expensive and time consuming, however appropriate sampling techniques must be used to ensure that unbiased data are collected and that the sample is representative of the population. Even with the best sampling methods, sampling error can occur.。

For ordinary conversation they speak Spanish. But when they need to speak over a distance, and ordinary speech is impossible, they use the silbo, the name of a whistled form of speech.La Gomera is one of the smaller Canary Islands. It is very mountainous, for it was once a volcano. The island is almost circular in shape, with a high peak in the center. From this peak, deep, narrow valleys are separated by rocky ridges. So in spite of the island’s small size, walking from one place to another may be a slow and difficult job. That is why the silbo is so useful to the natives. Amessage can easily be whistled over a couple of miles, while to travel that same distance on foot mighttake an hour.A good whistler can be heard and understood five miles away. His whistling can be heard evenfarther away when conditions are favorable---when there is little or no wind. I was informed that the record is about nine miles. Anyone who has heard a first-class whistler will agree that this figure is quite possible. Not only does a whistle carry father than a shout, but it is easier to understand. When a person shouts, he cannot pronounce his words well. But in whistling, this problem does not exist. If a whistle isheard at all, it will be heard clearly. Many methods of whistling are used at La Gomera. The only one never used is the common lip whistle, because it is not loud enough. Usually a whistler inserts one or two fingers, or a bent finger, into his mouth. He keeps the front of his tongue still, and his lips spread and stiff. With some practice, this method of whistling can make a tone of astonishing loudness and clearness, with great carrying power and a range of about three octaves (八音度). In the eastern part of the island, most whistlers whistle in the upper range. On other parts of the island, they whistle in the lower range. Some whistlers do not use their fingers at all. Instead, they form a curve in the front part of the tongue which touches the upper front teeth. They then use their hands to form a kind of megaphone. There is nothing very unusual about these methods of whistling. Anyone with a good set of teeth can learn in couple of days to produce a noise that sounds much like a steam whistle. The really remarkable thing is that his simple noise can be used as a language.S26. By way of Macau, European science and art, as well as an array of innovations, flowed in a continuous stream intothe imperial palace in Beijing. To commemorate the unique role that the small place played in the cultural exchange between East and West, the Macau Museum of Art is presenting until March 11 the exhibition “Splendors of a Flourishing Age---Treasures from the Forbidden City”.One hundred and twenty Qing Dynasty art treasures have been selected from the approximately one million works in the Beijing Palace Museum. In 1715, when he learned that the Western artist Giuseppe Castiglione and a surgeon had entered China from Macau, Kang Xi immediately put pen to paper: “:Let it be known the Westerners should come quickly tothe capital.”Throughout the reigns of Kang Xi, Yong Zheng and Qian Long, vibrant artistic activity was the norm in the imperial palace, and the clear distinctions between Western art and the art of the imperial nobility gradually faded as the two forms because inextricably intertwined. At that time, watching the tidal bore was already a grand occasion in town when the whole population would turn out for the spectacle. The best time to do this was from the 15th to the 18th of the eighth month of each year. But beginning from about the tenth day of the month, that part of the river bank that offered the best vantage point for ride watching would already be a busy gathering place for little open-air booths and stalls where vendors piled colourful wares on their carts or boxes. There would be all kinds of snacks and cooked meats in shining pots and pans. The taverns and restaurants would put up mulfi-coloured lanterns and flags or pennants, displaying meanwhile an attractive array of meat and vegetable dishes with a lot more exotic delicacies on the menu. In the tea-houses would be hung painting scrolls and calligraphy scrolls by famous artists while the antique vases would be filled with flesh flowers. In addition, there would be vendors displaying plasters and medicinal herbs for sale on the ground, roving artists with their monkeys for variety, shows or folk artists ready to entertain the crowds. Even before the days of the tidal bore, these people would be gathered on the river bank doing whatever they could to attract pleasure-seekers. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people, visitors from other towns as well as local residents of Ling' an, would be hustling and bustling about, clogging up the way and making traffic impossible. In the large riverside mansions that lined the banks, there would be opulently dressed men and women, some leaning against the windows or the balconies looking into the distance and some looking down gazing fixedly at something going on downbelow.16. These travelers seek enjoyment and pleasure for their travel. Vacation travel is typically price-sensitive and often concerned with the particular time of day or day of week schedules. Vacation travel has been heavily promoted by the airlines for Saturday and Sunday travel when their transport capacity is not heavily used by business travelers. Further, the vacation travel market is where the airlines often offer lower fares. These tickets often have many restrictions designed to prevent regular business travelers from switching to the lower fares. For example, the super-saver fare requires the passenger to stay at the destination over a Saturday night. Such fares are not good during certain heavy holiday periods or Monday to Friday flights, or they constitute only a small number of seats on flights that normally wouldnot be filled by full-fare business passengers. The vacation market is an important one to Florida, the Caribbean, Colorado, and Vermont during the winter months for sun and ski vacations. The United States to Europe and the United States coast to coast are strong vacation markets in the summer. Travel agents and tour operators are heavily involved in the vacation market. Charter bus trips and tours are also major parts of the vacation market. The vacation travel market is also splintering into “boutique” travel niches as well. These are specialty vacations in which recreation and/or rest at a hotel or on a cruise ship are not the major elements of the trip. Trips in this category that have become increasingly popular in recent years include viewing rare animal life at the Galapagos islands, whale watching in Baja California, hiking in Nepal, photographic expeditions in the wilds of Alaska or the Northwest Territories, safaris in Africa, and nature cruises up the Amazon River. These trips typically are educational; they often employ naturalists who give speeches and show films relating to the site on the trip21. wiped out in the United States14years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗).But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly.Already this year,115measles cases have been reported in the USA,compared with189for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangeroustrend. When vaccination rates are very high,as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called“herd immunity”,which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in.When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger. That’s exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County,California,where22measles cases were reported this month,to Brooklyn,N.Y.,where a17-year-old caused an outbreak last year. The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免),sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now,several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out.But no one does enough to limit exemptions.Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough.Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks.46.The first two paragraphs suggest that____________.A.a small number of measles cases briefly, apologizing for your mistake.Keep the tone measured:don’t handle it too lightly,as people can be offended, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of their culture(i.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names).Clicking“reply all”unintentionallyYou accidentally reveal(透露)to entire company what menu choices you would prefer at the staff Christmas dinner,or what holiday you’d like to take.In this instance, the best solution is to send a quick,light-hearted apology to explain your awkwardness. But it can quickly rise to something worse, when everyone starts hitting “reply all”to join in a long and unpleasant conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone to calm down.Sending an offensive message to its subjectThe most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an unkind message about someone, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person as soon as possible and say sorry.Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly—see it as an opportunity to clear up any difficulties you may have with this person.50.If you have written the wrong name in an email,it is best to________.A.apologize in a serious mannerB.tell the receiver to ignore the errorC.learn to write the name correctlyD.send a short notice to everyone51.What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your“reply all”email?A.Try offering other choices.B.Avoid further involvement.C.Meet other staff members.D.Make a light-hearted apology.52.What is the passage mainly about?A.Defining email errors.B.Reducing email mistakes.C.Handling email accidents.D.Improving email writing.(C)A child's nap often provides a much-needed rest for parents too.Time for an uninterrupted phone call,or a rest on the sofa. And naps have to be a good thing for preschools, surely, since they need to take a rest and get enough sleep for their brainsto develop.Short naps have also been shown to be good for adults---improving alertness and reaction time.So it feels counterintuitive for a review of26studies to conclude that napping in children over two years of age may not be a good idea at all.The review says that after two years of age, napping is associated with going to sleep late at night, poorer quality sleep and waking earlier. So should we discourage naps in preschool children -even if they really seem to need one?Although the review talks about the effects of napping on two-year-olds,most of the evidence in review actually comes from studies on three-year-olds.Also,the authors of the view article are clear that the research on children’s naps is of poor quality;some studies rely on parents’remembering how much their children slept,or are for very short periods.A study published in the journal of attention disorders in February suffers from some methodological shortcomings(for instance small numbers--only28children between the ages of three and four, and only for five days),but is at least a randomized(任意的)controlled trial, using actigraphs(活动记录仪)worn on the wrist to objectively measure sleep. It found that children who missed their naps slept better at night and scored higher in studies of memory and attention.Dr Mark Mahone, one of the authors, says that sleep at night may be of a better quality than during daytime napping.Having a sound sleep at night,he says, provides a greater proportion of the slow-wave,restorative sleep that promotes brain development and reinforces what has been learned the day before. The study also found that the children who went without naps did not sleep more at weekends.“I could never get my children to nap,but for parents who can, there is no reason to stop”.Mahone says that more research is needed before anyone starts making recommendation, and children’s sleep requirements are known to be variable.53.The word‘’counterintuitive’’in Para.2most probably means_____.A.difficult.B.unreasonable.C.revolutionary.D.meaningless.54.What does the author think of the study published in Attention Disoders?A.Its objects are too young to take the test.B.Its findings are reliable due to the actigraphs.C.It has enough objects to produce the results.D.It provides various ways to help adults to take naps.55.According to Dr Mark Mahone,a better-quality night sleep will result in______.A.frequent rests on the sofa.B.higher efficiency of learning.C.more serious attention disorder.D.fewer daytime naps at weekends.56.The author talks mainly about his or her_______.A.opinions on whether children needs naps.B.various systemic studies on children’s naps.ments on some studies on children’s naps.D.understanding of the functions of children’s naps.Section C(8%)Directions:Read the following passage and then choose the most suitable headings from the list below for the passage.Note that there are two extra headings.A.People redefine themselves and their family relationships.B.Yes,the definition of mother has changed for some women, but not for all.C.If there was a“mother,”then usually there was a“father.”D.Children need parents who will love them, not own them or use them.E.After two years of carefully thinking about the decision,Marianne chose to adopt and now has a beautiful little boy.F.This untraditional parent thinks he is lucky. What’s in a word? Some words are more difficult than others to explain or define. Some are hard to define because we have strong feelings about them.We have strong emotions about word such as divorce or childhood. We may feel sad, happy,or angry when we think about these words.Definitions of other words have changed as people and the world have changed.Traditionally, the word“mother”meant both female parent and primary caregiver(the person who cares for the children). The word“father”meant both male parent and breadwinner(the person who earns money for the family).(57)________________In generally, this is still true, but two points of this traditional definition are changing. There is a growing number of single women who want to be mothers. They have not included a man,or“father,”in their plans. These women are choosing to have babies and raise them alone. They are not widows or divorces. They are mostly women with good jobs. They are economically independent. They are in their late30s,and they have never found“Mr.Right”(a man they would like to marry).”I decide I wasn’t going to turn40without at least exploring the possibility of having a child,”explains Marianne Boswell,a single mother living in the Boston area.”I wanted it to be a conscious decision,as opposed to something that just didn’t happen to me.”These women become mothers in different ways. Some adopt a baby. Some carefully choose a partner.Others choose donor insemination,a medical process that can cause pregnancy. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that32%of all births are now to unmarried women.In1960,the rate was only 5.3%.(58)________________There is another group that is also questioning the traditional definitions. In this group are men who choose to stay at home and care for their children. They, not their wives, are the primary caregivers. As Randall Mitchell says in the movie“Mr.Mom,”“When my daughter wakes up at night, she calls for her daddy”(59)________________As society changes, our definitions change.(60)________________As a result, we may need to create some new words.Somehow,“single mother”and”Mr.Mom”do not seem like very good names.。
