The Romance
The most prevailing kind of literature in feudal England was the romance. It was a long composition, sometimes in verse, sometimes in prose, describing the life and adventures of a noble hero. The central character of romances was the knight, a man of noble birth skilled in the use of weapons. He was commonly described as riding forth to seek adventures, taking part in tournaments, or fighting for his lord in battle. He was devoted to the church and the king. The code of manners and morals of a knight is known as chivalry.

介绍英国文学的英语作文
An Introduction to English LiteratureEnglish literature, spanning centuries of rich history and diverse cultural influences, is a vast and vibrant field that has produced numerous iconic works and influential authors. From the earliest epic poems to modern-day novels and plays, English literature has always been a reflection of the times, capturing the essence of human experience and emotion. The early ages of English literature saw the emergence of epic poems such as Beowulf, a story that exemplifies the virtues of bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice. The medieval period was marked by the development of chivalric romances and religious poetry, reflecting the values and beliefs of the time. The Renaissance brought about a significant shift in English literature, introducing the concept of humanism and emphasizing the importance of the individual. Shakespeare, often regarded as the greatest English writer, emerged during this period, producing a vast array of plays and poems that are still widely studied and performed today. His works, such as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth, explore themes of love, revenge, and the complexities of human nature. The 18th century was a period of enlightenment and rationality, reflected in the works of authors such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Austen's novels, such as Pride and Prejudice and Emma, focus on the lives of the upper classes, exploring themes of social class, love, and marriage. Dickens, on the other hand, was a social critic whose works, such as Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities, expose the injustices and inequalities of society. The 20th century saw a further diversification of English literature, with the emergence of modernism, postmodernism, and other literary movements. Authors such as Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and T.S. Eliot experimented with new forms of expression, exploring themes of consciousness, memory, and the role of the individual in society.Today, English literature continues to evolve and expand, with new voices and perspectives emerging from all corners of the globe. From contemporary novelists such as Zadie Smith and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to poets like Seamus Heaney and Carol Ann Duffy, English literature remains a vibrant and relevant field that continues to captivate the imaginations of readers around the world.。

英美文学赏析
Introduction of English LiteraturePart 1. The Anglo-Saxon Period (449-1066)The literature of this period falls naturally into two divisions – Pagan and Christian.代表作品The Song of BeowulfPart 2. The Anglo-Norman Period (1066-1350)The literature: The literature which they brought to England is remarkable for its bright, romantic tales of love and adventure, inmarked contrast with the strength and somberness(浓重,晦涩)of Anglo-Saxon poetry.Work: Sir Gawain and the Green KnightPart 3. Geoffrey Chaucer (1340-1400)The literature: Chaucer’s creative work vividly reflected the changes which had taken root in English culture of the second halfof the 14th century. The foundations(根基)of the feudal(封建)system had already begun to crumble(瓦解)。
Work: The Canterbury TalesPart 4. The Renaissance (the 16th century 1500 --)The literature: The 16th century in England was a period of the breaking up of feudal relations and the establishing of thefoundations of capitalism. The progress of bourgeois(中产阶级)economy made England a powerful state. In the firsthalf of the 16th century there appeared lyrical poems byThomas Wyatt; In the second half of the 16th centurylyrical poetry became widespread in England. The epochof Renaissance witnessed a particular development ofEnglish drama.Work: Works of Shakespeare(1)The first original play written in about 1590 was King Henry.(2)Hamlet: it is considered to be the summit of Shakespeare’s art(3)The Merchant of VeniceWorks of Francis Bacon(1)Of Truth(2)Of StudiesPart 5. The Period of Revolution and Restoration (The 17th Century) The literature: The 17th century was one of the most tempestuous periods in English history. The contradictions between the feudalsystem and the bourgeoisie had reached its peak andresulted in a revolutionary outburst. In literature also thePuritan Age was one of confusion, due to the breaking upof old ideals. In 1642, the theatres were closed. The Biblebecame now the one book of the People. The Puritaninfluence in general tended to suppress literary art.(Note: Puritans believed in simplicity of life)Work: Works of John MiltonParadise Lost (Book I)Part 6. The Age of Enlightenment in England (The 18th Century)The literature: With the advent of the 18th century, in England, as in other European countries, there sprang into life a publicmovement known as the Enlightenment. TheEnlightenment on the whole, was an expression of struggleof the progressive class of bourgeoisie against feudalism. The enlighteners fought against class inequality, prejudicesand other survivals of feudalism. Fighting the survivals offeudalism, the enlighteners, at the same time, were proneto accept bourgeois relationships as rightful andreasonable relationships among people. The Romantic Period (1798-1832)Literature: After the Industrial Revolution, Britain became the “workshop of the world”and the English bourgeoisie fattened on worldtrade. The Industrial Revolution pushed the bourgeoisie to thedominant position in the country. It became the ruling class. The “Enclosure Movement”, the peasants became landless andhad to find new ways of living. July 14, 1789 saw a greatevent in Europe. That was the French Revolution. TheRevolution proclaimed the natural rights of man and theabolition of class distinctions. It was amid these socialconflicts mentioned. Above that Romanticism arose as a mainliterary trend, which prevailed in England during the period of1798-1832.Works:1.George Gordon, Lord Byron (拜伦)(1788-1824)(1) His first volume of poems, Hours of Idleness (1807) 《懒散的时刻》(2) Childe Harold Pilgrimage (1812) 《恰尔德-哈洛尔德游记》2. What’s Literature? The word ―literature‖ came into English from the 14th
century in the sense of polite learning through reading. Thus a man of literature, or a man of letters, meant what we would now describe as a man of wide reading. So, this word corresponds mainly to the modern meaning of the word ― literacy精通文学,有文化.‖ From the mid-18th century, literature referred to the practice and profession of writing. This appears to be closely connected with the heightened self -consciousness of the profession of authorship. Since the 19th century, literature has been the high skills of writing in the especial context of high imagination.

Pride and Prejudice, originally drafted as ―First Impression‖ in 1796, is the most delightful of her works. The title tells of a major concern of the novel: pride and prejudice. In A Tale of Two Cities Dickens takes the French Revolution as the background of his novel, and the two cities are Paris and London in the time of that revolution.

Literature comes from human interest in telling a story, in arranging words in artistic forms, in describing in words aspects of our human experiences. This human activity embodies human desire to express and share experiences. At the beginning, the literary impulse exists only in one’s mind. It is a writer’s ― performance in words‖ as Robert Frost once said. In this way it can be appreciated by others. Therefore, we can define literature as language artistically used to achieve identifiable literary qualities and to convey meaningful messages. Literature is characterized by beauty of experience and form and by university of intellectual and emotional appeal.
